I'd heard the name Robert Harris before, but I didn't really know much about the person. Those few paragraphs from the guy have earned him a hell of a lot of respect from me.
Robert's name gets bandied about far too much by fans who really don't know what they're talking about or are just parroting what they've heard others say. But if you actually read what he says & writes (he does a sporadic column called "Yellow Layer Failure" on thedigitalbits.com), he is absolutely THE most respectable man in Hollywood. He totally GETS film history and significance (which he should, considering his job is to restore and preserve it!) and has a great gift for being able to eloquently say what so many in Hollywood really need to hear. It also helps that he actively communicates with average people like us through the hometheaterforum.
So who thinks the garbage mattes won't be corrected and will stick out horribly in 1080P.
If those can be fixed by fans on a home computer with off the shelf software there is zero excuse for a billionaire to leave them in.

From looking at the trailer I would say they didn't do a thing to the transfer and are releasing a 1080p version of the 2004 DVD. Crushed blacks in HD YAY!!!
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Oh, I hope not! The worst thing about the SE transfer was the crushed blacks because the colors can be improved but the crushed blacks are there for good. I was hoping that the BD might be better in this respect.

I hope it isn't the case as well. Hell, I would be more likely to buy this set if they were given the same treatment as TPM. Especially if the sabers were back to their original colours.

The only thing I wouldn't mind LFL correcting would be the garbage mattes. It doesn't bother me that they exist, but if there has to be any corrections, those would be the only ones. And the missing rotoscope on Vader's lightsaber in Star Wars. But just those things.
Avoidz, i think they already fixed the missing rotoscope

Hmm, I find that a bit surprising. I thought Lucas was a big supporter of buying movies digitally.

Yep, in the SE... But I was thinking more like if those were the only changes, not all the extra scenes, CGI, etc. Minor corrections. Like the visible gas tank in Gladiator; they could erase that.
Hi, sorry I didn't read through this whole thread yet. I saw the blu-ray trailer on starwars.com and it looks like the exact same masters used for the DVDs. According to Adywan, they are the masters that will be used for the blu-rays, but we havent seen anything official yet... well except from kenkraly who works for Lucasfilm obviously, but I'm a bit reluctant to believe him, I don't know why.
RE: avoidz
I disagree. The only minor, almost insignificant good thing about the SE is that it keeps them from fucking around with the original versions. Unfortunately, as we all know, that also keeps us from getting them in good quality the way they were meant to be. But I know I'd be pissed as shit if they did any rotoscoping, removal of garbage mattes, etc. But, for example, there's only one version of Raiders of the Lost Ark now, and it doesn't have that snake reflection in it, and it annoys me every time. Let the SE be a magnet for that kind of crap, and that at least validates its existence.

One thing that really frustrates me about Lucasfilm and particularly George Lucas is how they won't admit that they are making things up as they go along. It's obvious Lucas was making the prequels up as he goes along. The way he talks about his writing in his commentary and discussions he has with the film crew about things he will do. Not to mention he was pretty much letting everyone else dictate ideas about the prequels artistically and he just picked the ones he liked. Story wise I think he did think of most of it himself and didn't take any suggestions which was bad on him. To be a good director it should really be the other way around. I think a good film director should stay focused on their own vision but let all the creativity in on the story telling aspects. Like what RedLetterMedia said, other people's input on a movie can really make a big difference in the quality etc. etc. He said that the original versions don't exists to him and just sees them as earlier drafts. He then broke his word on that in May of 2006 with his announcement of the originals being released on DVD in laserdisk quality. Now it sounds like there are rumors of an episode 7 in the works that he has said many times will never happen on national television like "60 Minutes". He probably realized that he is going through his profits faster than expected (with all the food he's been eating) and that he timed at this rate he will have to make another star wars movie to sell enough action figures to keep up his Jabba the Hutt figure.
Like I always say, the garbage mates shouldn't be there because they are a mistake created by the video transfer, not the original cinematography.
It's not the video transfer creating them, they're on the film itself. They should be there, but if you have transfer/display levels set correctly they are mostly not very visible. Pre-SE video transfers have very bright levels and are on older standard-def technologies which tended to make them more obvious, but post-SE transfers got rid of a lot of them digitally or crushed the blacks down to the point where they are no longer there. I am pretty sure that even in theatres there were times when garbage mattes were visible.

I tend to agree. There is a difference between preserving the film versus preserving the video. I don't ever remember seeing boxes around the fighters in the theater. I'm guessing some people did, but I think that they shouldn't have been visible in a properly configured projection. Just because early video transfers exposed some things that wouldn't have been seen in the theater, doesn't mean that those artifacts are worth preserving on later, better home videos.
However, the vaseline under the speeder was present in the projection, and I find it interesting that they came up with that solution. It was there intentionally and it was a creative way to deal with a difficult problem, and nothing for Lucas to be embarrassed about. I never knew it was a "problem" until we were told in 1997 that it was a problem.

Yeah, when I said the garbage mates were a problem created by the video transfer, my point was that them being visible is caused by the video transfer, I know that they are actually present on the film but like Puggo says, they were (at least for the most part) invisible - ie weren't a part of the original experience and so they shouldn't be visible on video either - but it should be achieved by a proper transfer not digital tweaking. But I guess if nothing else worked, then, as long as nothing else was altered along the way, even their digital removal would be OK, because I think they fall in the same category as dirt and scratches.
In my opinion when a person claims they restored a movie, everything must be cleaned and recomposited.
When they aren't cleaned and recomposited, you get results like the recent release of the orignal Clash of the Titans on Blu Ray, and it was tore apart on Amazon by people who don't even know much about film.

I believe it must be cleaned, yes. The effects recomposited, no.

Indeed - that's what restoration means, i.e. restoring a film to its original state (or as close as possible given available time/resources/references).
Recompositing would constitute an alteration, every bit as troubling as digital erasings/corrections. Sure, there are many effects that no longer hold up to scrutiny but they're a product of the original production, and belong there. You've got to take the rough with the smooth...

Noooooooooooooooo! That's not restauration, that's mutilation, I explained here, why the recompositing botheres me more than the CG addition in the SE.
