My nfo points out that anyone intending to listen to the RiffTrax version should make a donation to RiffTrax.com and includes a link. That doesn't make it OK that I included it on the DVD, but I pay for all my RiffTrax stuff and I would hope that everyone else would do the same.

I did note that in your NFO. You also used the name "RiffTrax" in the menu to describe the track, which may increase the likelihood of someone paying them for its use. I know I paid for my copy, way back when, so can happily just enjoy it without qualms.

(Any guesses how much RiffTrax gets paid for each release v. the number of tracks spread around? And whether this track is above average for payment or below?)

Speaking of your DVD, at which I've only had the chance to glance (such the glory of correcting math tests):

Your introductory menu is FANTASTIC. I'm hugely impressed. Also good is the transition from menu to video.

Thanks! I actually spent a long while trying to come up with something unique that wasn't too cheesy. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I probably should have color corrected the transition (since it came from the 2004 DVD) and added a second or two of slug at the end, but other than that I'm pretty happy with it.

I have no idea what their sales are like, but the Holiday Special is one of their highest-rated riffs according to their site, so I have to assume it's a good seller. I'm sure all their riffs of the Star Wars/Star Trek/Harry Potter/LOTR franchises are big sellers. I purchased all the Star Wars riffs even though I still have yet to watch TPM or ROTJ.  Having never seen Transformers 2 previously, I bought that riff and watched it that way for the first time, which was awesome. I may do one of the Twilight movies next. :p

Yeah putting the Rifftrax info/link is pretty much the best you can do in this situation.  I guess I just don't trust enough to see people throwing some money their way if they get it this way.  I too have paid for all my riffs and have listened to almost all of them.  This one in my opinion is really above all others and they should get paid for it.  I mean I liked the special before, but with the riff its really elevated to greatness.  Especially after having to sit and edit with it for a long time listening to a lot of their jokes over and over and still finding myself laughing uncontrollably.

Yeah Zion, kudos for your release.  Love the presentation, I wish I could do fancy menus :(  And I like what you were able to do with the contrast/sharpening etc.  Alas, I just have an affinity for the KCCI version.

Zion, forgive the n00bish question, but that's what I get for only popping around the board every once in a while now. How do I get a copy of your DVD? I've purchased the RiffTrax and would like to compare to my own disc.

BEAUTIFUL.

Slight shimmer with background horizontal lines. Otherwise I'd have NO idea I was watching something 32 years old.

WOW.

Yeah there are some errors on the image that i cant fix, well not automatically.. maybe with manual correction, impossible to do it , no time for that :P

Anyway it looks great, i can't encode all the video because my computer is overheating , i will fix that in a few days and post the complete video very soon :D

Looking forward to seeing it. Watching the clip again, the words that come to mind are *stable*, *clear*, and *beautiful*. It was FUN to watch the cartoon again, to see and enjoy the background detail.

Good luck with the computer. My laptop's cooling system failed back in June...

Very impressive!  I'm imagining what you could do with an even better source.  Tell us about your process...it's pretty amazing.

It looks like KCCI to me, but I could be wrong.  With the issues that KCCI does have I'm always shocked at how the cartoon itself is in such great shape.  And if I'm right it goes to show that with the right work, like henry seems to have done, it could really look amazing.

And just for your eyes.. the 2 avisynth scripts i used

First i use this to deinterlace and encode into avi without compression

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

SetMTMode(2,8)
mpeg2source("holiday_special.d2v")

SetMTMode(2)

ConvertToYV12()
QTGMC( Preset="very slow", NoiseBypass=1, NoiseRestore=0.0, Sharpness=1.8)
selecteven()

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

After that i used this one for post processing on the uncompressed avi

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

SetMTMode(2,8)
import("C:\Program Files (x86)\AviSynth 2.5\plugins\Stab.avs")

avisource("Holiday_special_pre_01.avi")

SetMTMode(2)
ConvertToYV12()

mergechroma(aWarpSharp(depth=20.0, thresh=0.75, blurlevel=2, cm=1))
unblend()
stab()
decimate()

SetMTMode(2)
Convolution3D (preset="animeLQ")
FFT3DFilter(sigma=2)
warpsharp(10,1)
LSFmod(strength=220)
GradFun2DBmod()

ColorYUV(gain_u=3)
Tweak(sat=1.3,  hue=-8, cont=1.4, bright=-2)

FastLineDarkenMOD(thinning=0, strength=80)

crop(12,2,-8,-8)
lanczosresize(704,528)

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Too bad i still can't encode , i need to reinstall Windows on my PC and im planning to do it soon.. stay tune :D

So... Hi guys! Again with the n00bish stuff after being here for six (?) years, but can anyone hook me up with a snail mail copy of Zion's DVD? My usenet hookup is no longer able to afford the service, and I'm not able to afford the service. I have many things I could trade. Email me (preferred) or PM me (if you must) if you can help! Thank you!

This is great stuff...nice find, none!  Previously I've only ever found one comment, in print and not video, by Bea Arthur about the Holiday Special.  I even contacted her agent while she was still alive about an interview, which she declined.  Now that she's gone I didn't hold any hope of ever seeinng anything more by her on the subject.

The interviewer here is really confused.  She's trying to ask about a rumored (and apparently debunked) appearance by Bea Arthur in a Star Trek episode under the pseudonym "Jane Ross":

http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Jane_Ross

Since this never happened (it was a completely different actress), Bea understandably doesn't know what the interviewer is talking about, and assumes she means her appearance in the Holiday Special...which she then goes on to comment about. The interviewer probably doesn't know about the Holiday Special, and continues to unsuccussfully push the Star Trek angle.

I feel like I've had the same type of conversation with some board members.

Henryperu77, what codec do I need to view this clip?

Well that's because your delusions of grandeur keep making you think this is a Star Wars forum, when obviously this is thee place to discuss the intricacies of the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.
