To think there would have been no second movie if Vader had just paid more attention to who is wingmen were.

This highlights the key difference between the TPM (and the PT in general) and ANH.
The TIE pilot's panic is a human response, without it things may not have gone well for the Rebels but ultimately he panics because of Han and Chewie's human/Wookiee decision not to bail out on their new friends and their skill at shooting the first fighter and remaining undetected when entering the battle.
Luke has a free shot at the exhaust port because of a chance panic but it's his skill and his decision to trust the Force to guide his actions and not the previously demonstrated inadequate targeting computer.
In TPM Anakin is in the fighter by chance, in the battle by chance, slips through the shields (possibly by skill but we can't rule out chance) and fires at the reactor by chance and luck has it it's a direct hit.
The only skill he shows is escaping the hanger in time and these are skills we have already seen him using with greater effect in the podrace.
It's a dead conclusion, the kid has not grown at the end of the story, he hasn't learned anything new.
Fate or the Force or Lucas has done all the hard work for him.

Anakin wasn't being lazy, the universe around him was just cutting him too much slack.
I thought of this when I was very young, but it's never bothered me. That article jumps to a few conclusions without any proof. Who says Han had a clear shot to take out Vader? I'd say he obviously didn't or he would have done so. Luckily, sneaking up on and shooting the fighter he DID have a clear shot at did the trick.
I always though that pilot rammed Vader on purpose. He was fired upon, screamed look out at his leader and did his best to protect him from incoming fire. At least that's what I've always thought since watching ANH while I was around 4 years old.
As to why Han didn't shoot at Vader... it's Han, really. He went in, guns blazing wildly, screaming like an idiot when nobody besides Luke (and maybe Rebel command) could hear him. It's luck he actually did hit something. :)
Why didn't Han come back a little earlier so that numerous Rebels didn't die? Why didn't Wedge or other pilots strafe the TIEs or maybe even come in behind them and box them in?

Because this is Star Wars and there isn't a single battle in the trilogy that makes any sense from a military view point.

Has anybody ever watched the Channel 4 ( U.K. ) Series Spaced ?, Tim ( Simon Pegg ) has just watched the original Star Wars trilogy with a down stairs flat mate and he credits the star destroyer gunner as the guy who could have ended the trilogy there and then. Long before the tie fighter pilot saved the day.
