Nick name for little orphan Ani.

"Anakin" as a name, is totally awesome.  "Anakin Skywalker" has a nice ring to it.  It's has this archaic sense to it that seems to me to fit well in the SW universe.

"Ani", however, is a terrible nick name for the handsome rogue jedi.  I once tried to think of other solutions to this nick name problem and, unfortunately, "Anakin" doesn't seem to provide a lot of diminutive options.

But on my drive to work this morning... I thought of Obi-Wan -> Ben and how little sense that makes etymologically speaking... yet how much sense it makes on an emotional level.

So what kind of nick name can you come up with for "Anakin" that doesn't royaly screw up the feel of the character?

My best effort in the matter would have to be Anakin -> aNakin -> aNikin -> Nik.  Nik name?  Get it?  Nik is obvoiusly a derivation of the English name Nick... but Ben & Luke are English names as well, right?

Still, it doesn't feel quite right to me.  Any other stabs?

You are so close!  Just replace "n" with "r" and you've got a winner.

I guess Rik from Anakin isn't any more of a stretch than Ben from Obi-Wan.  Thanks for the suggestion!

I think Anakin has the nickname "Tan."
The same way Edward can be "Ted."

This retcons away and old error from the old Sunday comics strip that identified Luke's dad as "Tan Skywalker."

(Do you think this BS will get me a job at Lucasfilm?)

I was going to jokingly suggest A-Walk,  but how about AK?  Kind of has that dangerous rifle sound to it.

I don't his wife or friends would call him "Anakin" all of the time.  Trisyllabic words are usually shortened one way or another.

...or maybe just Anakin

Why?  Wouldn't that get confusing?  I mean, if his name and his nickname are the same, well...I don't know, but sure seems like it would be confusing.

Ok, for example, let's say Anakin hasn't seen me for 20 years.  All his friends call him A-Walk, but acquaintances and introduced strangers call him Anakin.  So if someone comes up and calls him Anakin, he doesn't have to worry if it is a friend he's forgotten.  Likewise, if someone calls him A-Walk and he doesn't recognize him, it gives him more time to rack his brain trying to remember who this is.

Now then, like I said, let's say Anakin hasn't seen me for 20 years, and I come up and say, "Hey Anakin, you look like hell, did you fall in a lava river or just forget to put makeup on?"  Now, if his nickname is A-Walk, he knows he can just cut me down with his lightsaber.  But if his nickname is Anakin, he's thinking, "oh shit, do I know this guy?"  He can't just strike me down, because I might be Padme's poolboy and she's going to be pissed if she has to find a new one.  Meanwhile, as he's debating all this in his head, I take out one of those big oversized boulders you see on The Road Runner and I smash him real good, then steal his car.

I hope this was helpful.

Nick? What does that mean?
Oh, nothing. My dad thought of it while he was shaving.

Nice observation there, Fink Olie.

How about Nakkie?

Personally, though, I don't mind the "Ani" nickname (as long as it's spelt "Ani" and not "Annie", that is).
