The original Building Empire was brilliant, of course, but after watching this I can say the Miami version is an improvement. Most notable for me: the additional Wampa costume footage, and the use of Puggo's superior source for the 8mm audio differences.

Building Empire - Miami Film Festival Edition is now being posted to alt.binaries.starwars. (Sorry about the lack of an NFO file, I didn't have time to write one.)

The ISO image was built directly from the PAL DVD that Jambe sent me; it came out at around 5.05GB in size. An MDS file is also included for the convenience of ImgBurn users. Burn the image to a DVD+R DL.

As JD mentioned previously, this edition differs from the original in that it includes certain fixes and corrections, as well as footage from the 'lost' 'Making of The Empire Strikes Back' documentary thanks to Darth Neo. The disc doesn't include any of the extras that were on the original release, it's simply the feature length doco with a one-button static menu.

I apologize, I'm a bit of a noob with some things, but what better way to learn, than to ask. How does one access alt.binaries.starwars to find the new Miami Film Festival Edition?

I can play PAL, at the right speed even, using MPlayer.
It just struck me as strange since I thought I remembered the Miami festival requiring NTSC.

Funny thing, memories. I must be 'remembering' the Miami grappling-hook scene ;) Oh wait, wrong movie....

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Is there any chance I can have one of each sent to me?  I was hoping to convert both BE and RTJ to NTSC for further distribution.

As I remember it, it goes like this:

  • JD's original "master" in FCP is PAL 25fps; it was sourced from the Region 2 DVD (with sections from my PAL laserdisc transfer).
  • His original version released in 2006 was PAL.
  • Someone - Boon? - converted this to NTSC.
  • JD created an updated version for the Miami Film Festival
  • He sent the raw audio/video files to me to carry out a PAL->NTSC conversion, because the Festival required NTSC. I did the conversion based on a simple re-encode/slowdown of the progressive frames to NTSC framerate and resolution.
  • However, there were some issues with this - IIRC some scrolling subtitles were interlaced and became illegible after conversion.
  • Not sure what JD did then - he may have contacted the festival organisers to ask if PAL was OK, or he may have attempted an NTSC conversion himself.
  • The disc I recently received from JD was in the form of a fully-authored PAL DVD. I haven't compared the documentary on this disc to the raw files I received earlier in the year, so I can't say whether it's exactly the same... :-)

Actually, I'm the one who did the original Building Empire NTSC conversion.  Boon did the Jedi one.

That interlaced subtitle issue was one of the issues that caused me problems back when I converted.  I think I fixed it by deinterlacing the PAL before I did the NTSC conversion.

What, you didn't compare frame counts?  Well you're fired!

caligula, were you thinking of doing a single-layer BE conversion by chance?  If you shrink the 5GiB version as part of a proper re-encode it might turn out better than if I try re-quantizing a la DVD Shrink.  I can definitely get you MIAMI_RTJPAL since it's single.

Yeah.  Even if you do a dual layer perfectly it's just too easy to have some glitch somewhere and mess it up.  This version doesn't have all the DVDROM stuff or the fancy menus to replicate.  Where the problem was before was the soundtrack wasn't exactly the same length as the video for some reason plus there was the learning curve in that no one actually had a straight Mpeg2 to Mpeg2 conversion method that actually slowed down the video.  I also scrubbed the soundtrack and repitched any sound that seemed too slowed down (mostly Mark and Carrie).  When I did the RTJ dual layer it went perfectly the first time, but no one wanted it so it didn't get released until a few months ago.  Honestly, I hope I can remember how I did it.

I just finished watching Building Empire on YouTube, and I have to say that the work put into it is incredible.  I can't appreciate it enough.  So many alternate takes, audio changes, and insights...  I can't wait to watch Returning to Jedi!  Thanks for not only taking the time to make it, but taking the time to post it somewhere where we can enjoy it without hours of downloading.

I'll probably download it anyway. :-D

Sadly, I don't have a MySpleen account. Can anyone tell me where Building Empire is still available (either edition)?

Thanks very much. :)

I've been trying the myspleen torrent, but it's dead.  Any other torrents?

Hi All,

Just a quick one to say that the people at 'The People Vs George Lucas' have granted me a bit more time to submit my interview.  Although I won't make the SxSW cut of the film, the final international release cut is yet to be finished.

So, are there any questions you would like me to answer when I interview myself next week?

Cheers

What went right and what went wrong with any of the Star Wars films?

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Well, I've just shot the interview.  Despite being a person that's not entirely comfortable seeing himself on screen, it turned out ok, thanks to some good friends.

Now I have to edit all the good bits together and get it out to the USA.  I doubt I will make the final but, but you've got to be in it to win it.

Thanks for the questions too!  I've definitely integrated them into the answers. (if that makes any sense at all!)

Miami Version Complete.

I recently merged all the DVD extras (with menus) found on the previous SL PAL release with the DL PAL Miami version.

I also included the DVD-ROM folder that was only found on the SL NTSC version.

Nothing was re-encoded or shrunk down.

I just put everything in a folder and fixed .ifo and .bup files

You can find it at fanedit.info

Just be sure to grab the 5.6 gb version that is stored at megaupload

It should download pretty quickly, especially if you use jDownloader.

This is the contents of the readme file:

Building Empire - Miami Version Complete

ZeppelinRox from fanedit.org and faneditforum.com

Dual Layer PAL DVD

What is this?

Well, it's a combination of 3 DVD releases of Jambe Davdar's Building Empire.
Basically, I just grabbed all the best available features from all 3 versions and put them on a single DL PAL DVD.

The 3 Sources were:

1. Building Empire DL PAL DVD - Miami Version - I used the Building Empire documentary video from this version. This DVD has the latest version and best video quality available but it had no extras whatsoever.

2. Building Empire SL NTSC DVD - I used the DVD_ROM folder from this version - since only this version had it. The DVD_ROM folder contains the following stuffings:

 ESB Radio Drama
 ESB 'Story Of' Album
 Mark Hamill 1979 Audio Interview
 DVD Covers
 Video Extra

3. Building Empire SL PAL DVD - From this version, I used all menus and all the extras that were in the VIDEO_TS folder.

The details of ALL these extras are on the back cover.

Come to think of it, a while back, I had made additional covers.
Actually, I just modified a couple of the ones that I liked.

MO - 1 Deleted Magic.jpg
MO - 2 Building Empire.jpg

I know those names were already used by the original artist but not to worry, the original versions are still there and are named:
MO - 1 Deleted Magic orig.jpg
MO - 2 Building Empire orig.jpg

I just think the versions I made compliment the FANTASTIC "MO - 3 Returning to Jedi.jpg" cover quite nicely.

Lastly, when I first merged all the DVDs together, the navigation menu still showed 46 chapters (from the original SL DVD) even though only the first 21 chapters were used (which worked perfectly and exactly as they do on the updated Miami version).

The "fixed" VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP files merely delete Chapters 22-46 from appearing on the DVD navigation menu.

It's not really necessary but if you choose to use the the fix, just overwrite the files found in the VIDEO_TS folder with these 2 files.

Anyway,

ENJOY!

The original PAL version - according to the specs on the wiki - does include the DVD-ROM folder.

Oh OK.

That makes sense since the NTSC was converted from the PAL.

Actually, I did think that it was odd that the DVD-ROM folder wasn't on the SL PAL DVD that I had originally downloaded not too long ago.

Thanks for the info.

So I should have said, "I also included the DVD-ROM folder that I only found on the SL NTSC version.

Edit: I hope that I didn't ruffle any feathers :P

I very much enjoyed the NTSC versions of both Building Empire and Returning to Jedi.

Unfortunately I have a problem; I live in the UK, and as such I require the PAL versions of the films if I want to watch them on my DVD player. Does anyone know what the significance of the 'IFOFIX' is?

If you're talking about the merged DVD that I put together, I mentioned in the readme text (in my first post) the purpose of the ifofix. It merely removes non existent chapters from appearing in the DVD navigation menu.

Without the fix, the DVD will still use the same chapter points that are on the original Miami DL PAL disc so it really isn't necessary to use the fix.

Of course this merged Miami DVD is in PAL format and the fix applys to this disc and only this disc.

It's of no use to any other PAL or NTSC version.

I think that you should just download the PAL versions anyway. As a bonus, the video quality is much better.
