STAR WARS: the alt.binaries.starwars thread — Page 23

Sorry for dredging up a thread that's lain dormant for 4 months (and on my first post, too...), but it seemed the most appropriate place for my question/request. I've poked around with the usenet access offered by my ISP, and can't seem to reach alt.binaries.starwars from them. I have a set of Dr. Gonzo's trilogy which I loved, but my 2-year old got his hands on them, and now all four discs have fatal flaws, so I'm looking to recover them, preferably in ISO format.

As stated earlier, I can't seem to reach alt.binaries.starwars, but I can reach alt.fan.starwars. So I'm hoping someone with the Dr. Gonzo set is willing to either a) upload them to alt.fan.starwars (if that's allowed by usenet ettiquette) and possibly coach me on some of the finer points of usenet, b) seed a torrent with ISO files (I understand posting torrent file links is taboo here, but can you PM a link? email?), c) upload ISO files to a file server like filedropper.com that allows larger files (up to 5 GB), or d) burn a copy and mail it, with appropiate compensation for media, time, and postage.

ok, i know i'm probably not the person to be talking about newsgroups...

but anyways, a few things:

----------------------------------

i'm not sure, but a lot of ISP'S in America are cutting off access to ALL of the alt.binaries.*

hierachy (stupid law) .... to protect themselves, which might be why you can access the

alt.fan.starwars

-------------------------------

you need to go to a dedicated newsgroup provider like giganews, etc. and then

you will have full speed, and full access

------------------------------

although what you're looking for might not be there, trust me, there's tons

of other good stuff there..

good luck,

later

If you don't need a lot of usenet access, I would suggest AstraWeb.  They have pay as you go plans and unlimited access plans.  The unlimited access plans are unfortunately limited to only 1.5 MB of bandwidth though.  So if you need unlimited, GigaNews might be the way to go.

I doubt you'll find the Dr. Gonzo edits on Usenet at this point.  I'm sure someone could upload them though.  You might want to take a look at Adywan's Revisited edits instead though.

FYI, the cut off of alt.binaries.* groups has nothing to do with any law.  It's a pre-emptive measure ISPs are taking to protect themselves.  It doesn't even effect 99% of their customer base anyway.  Anyone that wants Usenet access typically goes through a usenet provider as it is.  Most ISPs, in the last few years, really only had a 3 day or so retention, which is complete garbage anyway.

Can someone help me with usenet binaries posting? I'm having trouble figuring out what size my rar files should be, the par2 block size, and the optimal lines per part (yenc).

I'm using a windows based system with quickpar,winrar,and powerpostA&A.

The material I have is destined for a.b.starwars, once I know what I'm doing.

Where I can find out more about this edition.

Also, is this disc NTSC?  Just curious.

Many thanks.

Hi, many thanks for posting this, I've been looking for it for ages.

Having downloaded the files last night, parts 51/94, 52/94, 53/94 and 94/94 are described as incomplete.

I'm fairly new to all this, so sorry if I'm missing something obvious, but I assume I need these parts in order to create a complete file that I can burn to DVD?

If so, is there any way I can get hold of these parts?

Thanks very much,

Andy

There should be some par2 files that were posted as well.  Grab those and a copy of quickpar and you can rebuild the missing rar files.

Thanks Void (for the PM), and lordjedi! That worked like a charm, and I've successfully burned the DVD.

Not bad for my first try with usenet, wonder what I can grab next?!

Cheers,

Andy

Thanks to those who have posted the EditDroid and Rowman supplemental material. There's lots of overlap, two different visions of organizing the material, but both are wonderful.

I don't suppose that there's anyone out there who has a copy of EditDroid's OUT discs?

Thanks again,

The complete EditDroid set is going up soon in ISO format. All dvd-rom content is intact, as well as the original JACKET_P folders. All disc images have been burn tested.

Up already: EditDroid Supplemental. This archive contains disc art, nfos, and MD5 files for verifying the disc images.

Next post: EditDroid disc 1. It should be finished sometime tommorow, if all goes well. This is version 2 of EditDroid EP IV (dvd-rom content, selectable crawl).

Enjoy

Thanks for the screen caps of the menu. ANH version 2 has been posted, as have TESB and ROTJ.

To clarify: This series is only "complete" from a certain point of view. I do not have EditDroid ANH version 1.

Update: EditDroid ANH version 1 coming soon...

Hi, I finally subscribed to astraweb (quite affordable by the way) and made the jump to the world of usenet's binaries...

I downloaded Belbucus and  Mother's pwnage version, and man what a restoration!! Are there any equivalent versions of empire and jedi that could be reposted??

By the way, thanks and greetings to all!

a.b.sw would probably have been the place to find it, two years ago, but back then I'd forgotten all about Usenet.  So, a bit late, I'll ask....

On February 8th 2006, Conan O'Brien had Harrison Ford on promoting the movie "Firewall."  Not necessarily interesting, but Conan ambushed Ford with a clip from the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Does anyone have a *decent* quality copy of those few minutes?  There is a copy floating around that's just AWFUL, but I'd love to have one that I didn't have to apologize for before I even played it.

Many thanks,

Bumping this old thread for two reasons:

1. For anyone interested, it looks like some generous soul has reposted Jambe Davdar's Building Empire (original PAL, NTSC and the Miami PAL version). Higly recommended for anyone who hasn't seen it. More info here and here.

2. Recently there has been a general increase in Usenet posting abuse (password-protected RARs, spam, etc). Although this hasn't greatly affected the low traffic groups like a.b.starwars, I have seen reports of porn being posted to the group with misleading post titles (ie claiming to be a WookieGroomer release). If you spot anything like this, you can use this thread to warn other users.

Firstly, sorry for making a typical noob post in a near enough dead thread, but I'm having trouble downloading from usenet.
Can anyone help me with this?

1. I can't access a.b.starwars. I've tried using Thunderbird, Grabit, Agent and Google Groups, but none of them show me any posts. I can get some files if I have the relevant NZBs, but I can't see what's been posted.

2. I downloaded the 4-disc RowMan set, but they were all incomplete. QuickPar managed to fix the LD Extras disc, but it isn't working for the others. All the Par2 files are there, they're just not being used for some reason.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Does anyone have some extra bandwidth on their usenet subscription right now? A thing popped up that I am trying to get for a trade (EwokGroomer's re-coded AVCHD version of ROTJ, compressed from WookieGroomer's), and I'm trying  not to pay for a subscription. If anyone could help me out, I have lots to trade. Just email me. Thanks!

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.
