Hewlett-Packard has signed a deal with Sony Pictures to turn out DVDs from the studio’s library whenever customers request them, the Los Angeles Times reported today (Thursday). The deal will allow consumers to order movies that ordinarily would not be stocked by dealers because they are too obscure or too old. HP indicated that it expects to sign similar deals with other studios. “We’re hoping this provides another option to make available products that wouldn’t necessarily garner widespread retail shelf space,” Jason Spivak, head of strategic development at Sony Home Entertainment, told the Times.Added Doug Warner, head of HP’s digital content business, “If studios can sell more catalog than previously, they can generate more money.”

Personally I’m excited about this, but also afraid that we may only get cropped and/or non-anamorphic and/or non-remastered transfers

Even non-remasted transfers will be better than what we have of a lot of older Columbia films, which is nothing. I think this could be great.

Wow, I really like this idea. Though I imagine it would cost a lot more than I would like to pay for an old movie, but if they manage to stay around the $15 - $20 dollar price range then it wouldn't be a bad deal at all. I hope other studios take this on.

Definitely. I'd still love a remastered Rocketeer. Great movie, but was crushed by Terminator 2 that year.

This wouldn't encompass the rights to the MGM back catalogue following the Fox changeover, would it? Shame, as there's a bunch of stuff (namely the back catalogue of Charles Band's Empire Pictures) that I would definitely be taking advantage of this for.

Let's hope other studios follow suit!

I think it's great, but don't get too excited about it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I take this to mean only movies that have been previously available in their catalog of DVDs at some point. I highly doubt they're going to do a full-on film transfer of something that's never been on DVD before just because somebody requests it. I think this is just for titles that are hard-to-find.

Still, this can be a good thing anyway. I can't count the number of times I've thought of a movie I wanted to purchase that I know has been on DVD, only to go out looking for it and find that none of the stores will carry it because it's too old or obscure, and not in their top 500 (or whatever). And so I usually end up looking for some place to order it online. This at least give me another option.

It's a start. A first step into a larger world, hopefully.

That would be great! I really love that movie and would love to see/hear a DVD looking/sounding better than the only one that's out there now.
