Star Wars Holiday Special on ABC's "Nightline"

They're about to talk about the holiday special on Nightline.....!?

EDIT: It was Josh Berman talking to a writer for Time Out New York about the Holiday Special and how bad it is, how it's not available on video but you can see it on YouTube, etc. and how George Lucas doesn't want anyone to see it etc. They showed a few brief clips of it as well.

I've never seen anything about the HS on such a mainstream show. It makes me wonder if it's now just a matter of time before there's an official release.

NO!!! It must not be released!!! It would be catastrophic! Thing of all the evil that poor unsuspecting young Star Wars would be subjected to. "Huh, the Star Wars Holiday Special? Never heard of that before, I love Star Wars so I'll have to put in on my Christmas list! I best it is going to be great!" It would be awful. The suscide rate among young SW fans would go through the roof. Even the fans who loved the prequels have no idea what they are in for with this thing. Nobody who knows what it really is would buy this thing save for the few masochists who have a hard on for shows that make you want to ram your head repeatedly into a brick wall. Besides, I am whole heatedly against the sale of DVDs that require a sergeons general warning to be printed on them.

I'd buy it for the Boba Fett cartoon. All things considered, it's no worse than the Ewok movies, or the Donny and Marie Star Wars musical.

If there's a buck to made, Lucas will unleash it, and cry all the way to the bank!

Where were you in '77?

You'd pay full DVD price for a VERY crappy cartoon with a run time of under ten minutes? All things considered it is a hell of a lot worse than the Ewok movies, at least those tried to be something, the HS is just a crappy variety show with the SW name tacked along with a few of its characters. Other than that the most SW aspect of it are people parading around in modified monkey suits pretended to be Chewbacca's family. It would have honestly taken them an immense effort to have made the HS any worse than it is. The thing is already as bas as if not worse than Volgon poetry.

Yeah, except that aside from the original films, it's the only show to feature the three lead actors in costume. To me, that alone makes it worth buying (but I'd prefer better than bootleg-quality, of course).

Can you imagine the internet back in 1978 after the Holiday Special? You think Jar Jar bashing was bad! I remember watching it live around Thanksgiving of that year, as I was about 6 years old at the time, and even I thought it was brutal as a kid, as I still remember Chewbacca's family as we were all laughing at how bad it was. I think Bea Arthur was in it too? WTF?

I would buy this again just watch.....and cringe.....

Anybody happen to record this little bit of history? I'd be very interested in getting my hands on this.

But they're the ones who need to see it the most.

ABC News' "Star Wars Gone Bad" segment (might be a generic news blurb which ran all over the place for the holi-daze)

Here's how to navigate the very unfriendly abcnews website
http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/
scroll down to "Video Extras - Featured Video" click on "Watch More Nightline"
a new window will pop up with their annoying flash player. down on the bottom right is a search (Go) feature, put in "Star Wars"
several viddie will show up the first should be the "Star Wars Gone Bad" segment, select it, go somewhere else as the add plays 15-30 seconds.

If someone can pull this clip out, i'd like to watch it, my system can't play abcnews.com videos.

this might be a direct link:

I recorded it on DVD, but it looks like someone has already uploaded it.

I wonder what was the first night it actually aired? The website shows the 26th, and the clip's intro from there says "Christmas may be over...", but we were talking about it before that. Sounds like you saw it the night of the 20th, Mielr... so I'm assuming it aired more than once. I'm still interested in your copy of it, especially if it's complete as aired the first time. Can you spot any differences?

BTW: thanks to none & Sunday256 for your links - you guys are totally on the team!

Yes, it was the night of the 20th that it originally aired.

I'm pretty sure it only aired once, so they must have added the "Christmas may be over..." part for the website. I can't view the website version, so I can't tell you if there are any differences, but I can tell you that the version I recorded is 4 minutes long, including one Nightline bumper and Terry Moran's intro and outro.

The website version appears to clock in at about 3:35, with no Nightline bumper but including the newscaster's "Christmas may be over" intro and a voice-over outro by John Berman.
