Roscoe Lee Browne obit at CNN.
It's a safe bet most of us who owned the album back in the day remember his narration of "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away..." very well.

Where were you in '77?

Certainly I do. That man's narration is as much a part of Star Wars to me as the movie itself.

R.I.P., oh great voice of Star Wars.

Looking at the guy I remember that he was cool but I don't specifically remember what roles he played. Was he one of the grandfathers on the Cosby Show?

What I don't get though is this: if he narrated The Story of Star Wars, how is it that he has an English accent there? He doesn't seem to be British. So did he adapt a faux-British accent for that reading? And if so, why?

I'm a little confused here.

Oh man! I totally forgot he was Box in Logan's Run! Thank you for reminding me Anchorhead.

Yes, I still own that record. A lot of people (including me) had a false memory of him reading of the "a long time ago..." line in the actual movie!

Sorry to hear about his passing.

According to the CNN story, he was from New Jersey.
I don't think he used a British accent, he just had a very refined, well-educated American accent (much like James Earl Jones').

He played a college professor on two episodes of The Cosby Show. He won an Emmy for one of the episodes. I actually prefered the other episode he was on. It was the one where Cliff Huxtable had a barbeque in freezing cold weather and all these people were over at the house for dinner. The most memorable part was when Theo and his friend "Cockroach" did a rap based on Julius Ceaser.

George Lucas was seduced by the dark side. The OOT ceased to exist in his mind and became the Special Editions...." "They're more maching now than movies. Twisted and evil."

Yeah, I certainly remember his roles on The Cosby Show, but I'm sad to say I missed that record. But he did have a very distinctive voice, and I can imagine what it would sound like to hear him say, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away."

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Ahh, that seems more familiar now. The Cosby show was great.

It's sad that Browne has died. He had a great ability to speak the English language.
