I wonder if Laserman would be able to help us figure out a way to do the direct exporting on Making Magic? I'd really like to see that disc cracked open, since it is difficult to get it running perfectly under XP. I haven't even attempted it in Vista.

I don't know if you've seen "The Force Returns"? It's a Sci-Fi (i think) SE-centric special but has a big section on the whole Jabba scene, including some soundbites I hadn't heard before including the possibility of giving the new Jabba legs?!?

I know it's not the new stuff you're after but there are a lot of before & after clips so you may find something of use

JD,

I don't know if you've heard, but a new 'making of' book is about to be published. I read this in a story on CNN's site:

"As the movie celebrates its 30th anniversary, George Lucas will be joined by many of his collaborators at a special screening at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences' Goldwyn Theater on Monday. Simultaneously, Ballantine Books is publishing J.W. Rinzler's "The Making of Star Wars," which bills itself as "The Definitive Story Behind the Original Film."

More than just a promotional making-of book, Rinzler's account seeks to strip away a lot of the mythology about the movie's creation that has grown up over the years. Rinzler, an executive editor at Lucasfilm, was aided in that quest when he discovered a treasure chest of interviews that Charles Lippincott, Lucasfilm's VP marketing and merchandising in the mid-'70s, conducted with the film's principals between 1975 and 1978. They provided him with a contemporaneous view into the movie's origins, uncolored by its eventual success.

"Everyone's memories are somewhat faulty, and opinions have changed over the years," Rinzler explains. But the discovery of the old interviews allowed him "to do as close to an oral history as I could."

Among the forgotten aspects of the movie's production that he unearthed was a failed attempt to use front projection -- a technique in which the performance is combined with pre-filmed material during shooting -- forcing the production to shift to bluescreen. Rinzler quotes Lucas saying, "The biggest change during filming was from front projection to bluescreen. We had shot the approach to the Death Star, but once we got the results, we realized it wasn't going to work.""

Thought you might be interested in this article that covers the novelization and original comic adaptation of ANH, along with some of the pre-film build-up. Lots of little details in there that might be useful.

Also, did you manage to get a copy of R2D2: Beneath The Dome? I have a copy of it if you need it.

Take care,

How wierd would this have been? I got this off of StarWars.com Visual Guide -- Chapter 1: Opening Logos

"At one point, George Lucas briefly toyed with the notion that the story of Star Wars should be introduced by a family of Wookiees. In this version the film opens with a father Wookiee telling his son about "Uncle Chewbacca." The father then produced a leather-bound journal revealed to be Chewbacca's diary. Evidently Chewbacca left the book for his nephew shortly before his death. After the father Wookiee reads the journal to his son, the film begins and the audience is transported to the opening scene we're now familiar with."

That would have been different.

I just had a great idea. Paste the final scene of the Holiday Special at the beginning of the film for a recreation and stick some Wookie sounds in there. oof, instant recreation!

Er... no thanks

A question: Has anybody re-created the originally designed crawl for 'Star Wars'? There is a great still of it in the new 'Making of Book' that I hadn't seen before.

I think Sluggo was toying with the idea? He posted shots and a recreated flat version of the crawl if I recall correctly. Maybe that thread's still around?

My radar went off and here I am!!

Let me do a bit of diggin...

EDIT: OK, here ya go. I think a lot of folks agreed it was a good idea in theory, but it never got put together. Maybe we didn't have the right thing to attach it on. Anyhoo... If the files need re-posting, I can do that tonight. JD, could you post that new pic so I can see if I need to do any more work on the logo or text?

Thanks guys. Sluggo, here is that picture for you (sorry, it's a photo rather than a scan). Your 2D reconstruction looks pretty accurate slugs.

I wonder if rebel_1138 is still around (haven't seen him in a while). He may be able to reconstruct the crawl for my project.

Also, has anyone got a sound effect of Luke's Landspeeder please? The only one I have is a 'flyby' and not suitable for what I need.

Thanks, JD! I might revisit the text and the logo this weekend. One or the things that was throwing me about the logo is that it looks like it was designed to be 'pre-slanted'. It is just weird looking.

I wish I would have had that shot a few years ago when I started it. I had to make the text off of the Richard Edlund pic. Serious headache.

adywan asked for some landspeeder sounds a week ago for his edit, and on this page, several people posted what they had. Hope they're helpful for you!
