Favorite Star Wars Movie

I already did this when I first joined. But that was a year ago, and we've got new visitors, so it's time to ask again:

What's your favorite Star Wars movie?

Mine's ANH.

I call shenanigans on this poll.

My favorite Star Wars movie is that one called, oh what is it again? oh yeah - STAR WARS!

Why is that not an option?

I thought by now, with the movie out on DVD in (what purports to be) its original form, EVERYONE would know that it's not called "A New Hope." That is a bullsh!t tag put on in the first round of Lucas revisionist history.

It's called STAR WARS.

Please get it right.

Amen to that. What the flying fudge is "A New Hope." I know a movie called "Star Wars" and it is one of the greatest cinemastic masterpieces of all time. Perfect in every way. I reccomend everyone check it out.

I agree with the sentiments here, but "A New Hope" was the closest thing to "Star Wars" I could vote for. So I voted for "A New Hope".

For what it's worth I can't vote in this poll either. My favorite movie is the 6 part Star Wars Saga. I just can't separate them out anymore. What makes any one of them great makes them all great to me.

Star Wars will always be my favorite, partially cause it is a standalone movie that can be enjoyed with a true ending, and partially cause it just has so many 'it' moments that make movies special. But I will say ESB is 1a to me, cause it is probably a better made movie, partially because of the bigger budget (one of the few times in history a bigger budget actually made a movie better then worse). ROTJ is a distant third, a movie I will always love, but won't be naive to say it is not a great movie, as many PT gushers on TFn can't seem to grasp that every movie is different, and there are no 6 movies that anyone sees the same. You can enjoy them on the same level, as I do with the OT movies 4,5,6, but to say that you can't pick your favorite, you are just lying and just trying to defend 2005 Lucas and his new montra, "It is supposed to be seen as one 12 hour movie......" Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.

If I were to say ANH was my favorite movie because it was the first time I was transported so completely by a movie, that would disregard how amazing I feel the full 6 film saga turned out in the end.

If I were to say that Empire Strikes back was my favorite because it has the best surprise I've ever experienced in cinema, that would entirely disregard the way ANH set that surprise up as such a shocker.

If I were to say Return of the Jedi is my favorite because it has one of the best showdowns I've ever seen in a movie that would entirely disregard the way the 2 movies preceding it set things up for such a climactic showdown. And now that we have the prequels it would entirely disregard how much more meaningful Anakin's return from the Dark Side is to me now that I have seen where he originally came from to begin with.

If I said TPM was my favorite film because it has my favorite Jedi in action (Qui-Gon) that would entirely disregard his eventual impact on the rest of the saga with the way he came back to show Yoda and Obi-Wan how to become a Force Ghost.

If I said AOTC was my favorite film because I love seeing Yoda put aside his cane and kick ass, it would totally disregard the way the other movies refrained from showing that to make that as special as it was for me.

If I said ROTS was my favorite movie because it was the most emotional experience I have ever had in a theater, it would totally disregard the accumulative narrative I had witnessed up until that point that set me up for such an emotional reaction to how all the events unfolded.

It's just too difficult for me.

All right....this should motivate you: The Fightin 303rd Ewok Squadron is threatening to start gnawing on the shins of George Lucas - UNLESS you honestly answer the question "Which is your favorite 16.6% of The Saga, Gomer!?"

I can't say I enjoyed any of the prequels as a whole, and when I first saw them I tried to ignore it, convincing myself ... "It ain't so bad!", but I'd just be lying to myself if I continued. I can pick and choose parts I like or dislike, or parts that I just think are badly acted, poorly written, or the cheesy, romantisized scenes. It just keeps me from enjoying them as whole. It keeps me from saying I like each of the Star Wars prequels. I've never done that with the first three films, because there was nothing to pick apart, nothing that made me cringe and say, "George ...why?" It's different for everyone, but if I was to say I liked the prequels just as much as I like the orginals, that would go against every grain in body to decipher good film making as opposed to bad.

Maybe younger people like them more than the older fans. I didn't really discover them until I was like 13, which would of been the early 90's, and I probably watched them 500 times through my teenage years. It's hard to pull yourself apart from that nostalgia aspect. They also represent a period in time that was special to many.

But, as Han Solo would say, "Hey, it's me!"

Hey, I'm 13, (14 on Sunday...YAY!) and I HATE the prequels. I think there are lots of people who feel the same in my age group, though it's really the people who are beyond they're years and can seperate good filmmaking from CGI effects.

And I agree with that part about not lying about liking the prequels. I could never say it. I tried to like them. In fact, three years ago, I did. But then I grew up. I started watching the OT. Then I got a set of bootlegs and fell in love with the nostalgic and perfect OOT. Now, I watch them all the time (OOT) and look upon the prequels with disgust. I know why kids like them, and I'm fine with kids liking them, but George should have realized that maybe you can sacrifice that kid demographic so that all will enjoy it in later years. He did that with ESB, and it works.

And your right about that nostalgic aspect. The films of today just aren't...great. They're good, and fun, and very entertaining, but no classics, nothing really rememberable. Only things I can compare with Star Wars are the LOTR trilogy, which are just as good and the best piece of filmmaking in 15 years. I also love the Pirates of the Carribean films. They are great fun, just non-stop action, like the OOT. But the 70's and 80's...that must have been a great time to be a moviegoer. Star Wars, Back to the Future, and numerous other classics.

I kinda like them all but my clear favourite is Star Wars, to me its just a great film its the only one of the six that does properly work as a standalone film and it has a bit of everything in it which I love, I do watch this film a bit more than I do the rest of them, I just love the film and it will always be my favourite..

Hey, I thought Liam Neeson was one of the better parts of TPM.

I voted for ESB, almost voted for "A New Hope." As far as I'm concerned, he didn't touch the movie but to add the E4 title, therefore, calling it ANH is just as valid.

I really did enjoy ROTS, though. That's about tied for me, but ESB easily wins out because it has Han Solo, and the Lightsaber battle at the end of it carries even more weight, due to Luke being an underdog. Whereas, the final fights in ROTS, Yoda/Emperor and Obi Wan/Anakin are evenly matched.

Probably my favorite part of the Lightsaber fight in ESB is after the group gets away in the Falcon and Luke's is taken by surprise by Vader, and Vader just cuts loose and really goes at him. The look on Luke's face when Vader tells him "You are beaten.... it is useless to resist" really tells us that he's emotionally and phyiscally exhausted. The circles under his eyes..... he looks totally worn out.

I can live with 80% of the SE additions. I even like the PT (overall). But not releasing the OOT in respectable condition? That's unacceptable.

Naturally, this isn't exactly an objective audience... after all, this is originaltrilogy.com. Which movies do we suppose people here are going to prefer? If this were prequel.com, the results would likely be reversed.

Now, that said, sure ESB is a good movie with lots of elements. But I don't think it is the classic that Star Wars is. You don't have to be a Star Wars fan to appreciate it as a great movie. Simple classic plot, great characters, believeable settings where the aliens are real folks doing average grunt work, incredible pacing - slow where it should be slow, and most of all ESB suffers the absence of Obi-Wan. Billy Dee Williams just can't make up for the loss of Alec Guiness and Peter Cushing.

I cannot stress enough why all the other films are substandard to me, and why I think Star Wars was uniquely brilliant in its casting. Those two veterans elevated the film so incredibly much. After that, Star Wars became famous and rested on its own laurels of the stars it created. And yeah, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill were great, but there were no more heavyweight actors to give the sequels the heft that Star Wars had.

And it's no small measure of why Attack of the Clones is far and away my favorite prequel that they used similar casting philosophy in featuring Christopher Lee as the villain. It was a brilliantly StarWarsian touch in what I consider the all-around most StarWarsian of the P.T. films.

You're right that ROTS would be up there if this were a PT crowd, but putting that aside, it does say something that ESB & SW are tied right now, and ROTJ has zero votes. Sure this isn't a scientific poll, but I feel this is what made the OT great, two classics and one good sequel in ROTJ.

Most of my friends fall exactly the way this poll is, there is a group like me who love SW more, and they seem to be more ObiWan/Luke fans, and then I have friends who love ESB and they are more Han Solo/Vader fans. But not one friend I know, and they are all 30-somethings now who saw SW in 1977, thinks ROTJ is the best, and that shows that quality will eventually show its true colors to the fans years later.

All the PT fans love the PT movies cause I still feel they are the flavor of the month, cause I loved ROTJ at 11 years old back in '83, but as time goes on and you get older, all of the sudden you begin to realize movie quality. I don't begrudge anyone for enjoying the PT, but I think they will have a big revelation 10-15 years from now when they try to watch the movies again and again, you just can't watch an average movie over and over, unless you are content with it.

ANH

I think just technically as a film it's the best executed despite having the worst fx of all the films. Fx aren't everything. The movie has real heart and just perfect casting. These people were born to play these characters. so the entire film feels magical and timeless to me. I love it forever.

The way the vote has fallen so far is completely as I would expect for this group. Star Wars in first, with Empire a close second. 1 vote for TPM (Go-Mer, I presume ), and no votes for the other prequels.

I voted for Star Wars, of course... that's the one that I feel if no other Star Wars films existed, it would still be everything Star Wars is to me in a nutshell.

It's a toss-up between "Star Wars" and "Return of the Jedi" for me. I think SW is a lot more fun and it is still my favorite movie to just pop in and watch on a rainy day, but Jedi I think does an excellent job of tying up all the loose ends in the trilogy, even if some of them are a little less satisfying then some would have hoped. Still, it's got the best space battle ever filmed, and IMO the Luke/Vader confrontation is the highlight of the entire series. I have a great deal of love for Empire as well, but the other two just resonate with me more.

This is my first post here, and I just wanna say I LOVE the site. I was a lurker at TF.net for a while, so it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who gets disgusted when people rank "Revenge of the Shit" at or above the OT.
