Super ESB and ROTJ SNES Video Review

 (Edited)

On YouTube, this review company posted two reviews of the incredibly difficult Super ESB and ROTJ for the SNES. Although not all the levels are shown, most of them are pretty in-depth. They even show off some of the game’s cutscenes, whilst combining them with OOT footage. In short, if you ever wanted to see the endings to these games, but got the living s**t beaten out you for trying it, now you finally get your chance…

EDIT:
The ESB review uses footage from the SE. Not only that, it gives you cheat codes and passwords! Something the ROTJ review does not do.

I was going to make this an edit to my first post, but the computer I was using would not let me log in. So someone please merge this post with my first one.

These were pretty good games. I never could beat any of them, but enjoyed them neverless. Games back in the NES/SNES era were very difficult, compared with newer games.

I managed to beat the first one (Super Star Wars), but it was on my emulator, which has a function that let me save wherever I wanted. So much easier.

Have yet to finish the other two though.

the SNES was the best, period. I do remember renting each SW game for the SNES

Good memories. The music and sound FX in these particular games used to stress my old stereo system pretty hard at times. SSW was easy once you knew about the secret cave full of extra lives.

Where were you in '77?

I remember playing SESB back in the day. It was so hard. I didn't like it very much. I prefer Jedi Knight (and MOTS), TIE Fighter, Jedi Academy and the Battlefront games.

It's not very widely known, but there was actually a port of Super Star Wars for the PC done by a European game design group for Lucasarts, complete with Lucasarts opening logo. However, Lucasarts decided not to use it, so it was shelved--even though it was pretty much completed. The game is out there and can be found if you dig for it. The graphics are very nice for the time.

Personally, I really didn't care much for the whole "miles of extremely difficult platforms with millions of enemies swarming at you" Nintendo gaming era. That's about the time I dropped out of the gaming scene for a while.

I remember being snowed-in up in the Oregon Cascades one winter for about three days. It took me that whole time to beat SSW. Was sucked in pretty hard. Don't think I slept at all. Later tried SESB, but it was too hard for me and I lost interest. Never even tried SROTJ. Yeah, they were pretty challenging. Might have to fire up MacMAME and track down some ROM's now... Thanks

You can go about your business. Move along, move along.

There were plenty of games not like that released around that time.

But you have to admit the market (particularly the Nintendo market) was flooded with games of that type back then.

I'm more of an adventure gamer, myself. I always liked games where you have a chance to explore and discover, rather than games where your finger is constantly on the "kill, kill, kill" button.

I miss Infocom games, and wish something equivalent would come along for the modern age.

Yes, the NES/SNES era was flooded with shoot-em-up platformers, and the Super Star Wars/Super ESB/Super ROTJ was of this type. But other stuff was around. I've always found this type of game very hard, and that is why I never did good in this era. Video games seem to go through fad games, and they get endless clones. In the Atari 2600, it was Pac-Man/Defender. Then in NES/SNES it was platformers, later fighting games.

I was able beat SSW numerous times, just because I loved playing it so much. SESB was a notch higher on the difficulty scale. I remember being stuck on one of the Degobah levels, only to find a glitch in the game that let me run through the entire level in the swamp, under platforms and everything without dying. It was a pretty f'in sweet glitch.

I was a huge nintendo fan in that era and I avoided shoot-em-up games just fine. Contra 3 was the most interesting of them, but way too short.

Just off the top of my head, released around that same time, there was Super Mario World (of course), Legend of Zelda, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, F-Zero, Super Castlevania IV (awesome game), Super Mario Kart (my god!), Street Fighter 2, Battle Clash, Cybernator, Star Fox!, and I'm sure there were others I would mention. Then, in the few following years you saw the amazing RPGs of Final Fantasy 6 (FF3) and Chrono Trigger; also the platforming-god games: Super Metroid (awesome game and an adventure game) Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (my favorite freakin' game of all time!), Demon's Crest, Earthworm Jim; and some other good games like Stunt Race FX.

The trick was to avoid crappy games based upon things like movie or tv franchises. The goal was to look for gameplay and fun.

I bought all three for my SNES ... and beat them all!!! http://www.anikaos.com/0004-pinkusagi/kaos-pinkusagi42.gif But, I remember not being happy with the lightsaber dueling vs. Darth Vader. It was just button mashing, swing, swing, swing ... I even wrote EGM magazine coming up with my own blocking and attack system. haha ...kids.

My all time biggest memory was the release of Street Fighter II for SNES. Man, the anticipation was off the charts! I remember it being a whopping 16 megs, which was suppostly the reason it was $70.

Oh man, I had all three of these back in the day and they were so fucking hard. Especially ESB, I never even got past the first level. ROTJ had the sweet speeder level though.

Although, as someone else mentioned, TIE Fighter is still my favorite Star wars game. The Battlefront games were cool too, but there was too much crap from the prequels in them. We get Aayla Secura as a hero, a character who had ZERO lines in the movies she appeared in, but not Lando? Lame. Hopefully next year's Battlefront III will be better.

oh now that you point it out, that does suck. Lando definitely should have been a hero in the battle front game. Hell, even tarkin. I'd like to play as him, standing around looking smug... yeah...

It would be cool if all sorts of help videos like this from back in the nes/snes/genesis era could be compiled and put on a DVD...
