Selectable crawl on new DVD? Or just the old one? — Page 3

I also think its misleading to compare the screens to the Dr. Gonzo transfer--that is one of the worst transfers i've seen. Stack the caps next to Moth3r's PAL transfer and you'd be hard pressed to tell which is which.

Would definitely be more representative to compare some of the better ld transfers out there with 720 caps from the upcoming release for more accurate assessment.

I will say that the OOT dvds look better than I thought they would. Since XO isn't out yet, one can't really fairly compare the offical releases to it. At least until it is complete. Things could be better, but they could be worse. If only we had anamorphic.

No " Oops. I was wrong. " ?
No " Excuse me for doubting you" ?
That would go against rule #2:

Using the cap provided earlier, I capped my Editdroid copy and lined it up against the Official Bootleg (which I have my suspicions really IS the Editdroid just downloaded and re-packaged

okay, which is which:

The EditDroid disc has always had noticably washed out colors on Star Wars.

The ESB comprison is a good one though.

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

Alright, I'll take a stab at this:

ESB - Top is Official, bottom is EditDroid

Star Wars - Top is Official, bottom is EditDroid.

They are pretty close, though, and it was very hard for me to tell! And whichever version it may be, I actually think the bottom ESB one looks better.

Is EditDroid's anamorphic?

its encouraging to see that there is a reasonable level of sharpness there to play with. too soft and no filter in the world can do much to recover the edge delineation etc.

Editdroid ESB has always been a hit and miss affair. on slow moving scenes no problem, but fast moving stuff is tremendously jaggy.

editdroid has always looked good but like I said in a previous post, these new DVD's are a few generational steps closer to the original material than anything we've previously had access to.

my one concern as someone has already said is whether or not there is much in the way of digital smearing.

I agree with ESBHG - it looks like both The Bizzle's caps have official top, EditDroid bottom. They are very close. The official caps look marginally sharper/more detailed, but the EditDroid ones look in some ways more pleasing. I used to wonder if the initial secrecy around the EditDroid set was because they were made by people at LFL, from the same tapes that have been used for the official release. I always liked the EditDroid colors - they look closer to the theatrical colors, IMHO, than any other NTSC set.

I'd love to see frame-for-frame comparison's to Moth3r's set and to get the answer to Arnie.d's question about DVNR.

Let me get this straight...

The crawl on Star Wars is a re-created original theater version one?

Or is it the usual Episode 4: A New Hope crawl?

If it's a copy of the LDs, then shouldn't it have the ANH crawl?

I'm distressed now that I wonder about this....I want the ANH crawl....that's how I've always watched it. I was born in '76, so I missed SW originally. Caught it on bootleg tapes in '81, so I've always remember the ANH crawl.

Yes, the crawl will NOT be the laserdisc version- it will be the original 1977 version WITHOUT the "episode IV a new hope" heading.

No "A New Hope" crawl.
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

I thought the crawl was a recreated 1977 version, not the actual version.

I don't think anybody knows for sure. It looks like the original '77 crawl, but whether it's the actual crawl or a newly-created one is unclear.

If it is the original theater version with no crawl, I'd get it.....but if it's tinkered with like I've heard, then FUCK THAT!!!

Agreed. If all they've done is remove the Ep IV ANH and otherwise left the crawl alone, I will raise a bloody stink about false advertising. In fact, I will follow the dubious advise of BadAss Keith and file suit, albeit in Small Claims Court, for my $20. I would publicize that lawsuit as much as possible.

I'm hoping none of this will be necessary. I won't sue for the lack of other changes that will likewise make the claim of "original theatrical version" a false one. But the original crawl or a completely faithful recreation OR I WILL SUE.

If it's been recreated, then it has at least been recreated to look like the original. It's not a cheesy photoshopped version of the 1981 crawl. The official site even shows that much evidence. It will be interesting to see which is the case, if anybody can tell. I keep hoping Havlock will chime in with the definitive answer about the selectability.

I think it is the ACTUAL '77 crawl. Check this out for further proof.

On the subject of the crawl, no it is not selectable, and why should it be?

If this is indicative of what we'll be getting on the DVD, then they definitely didn't just remove the "a new hope" header. Notice the formatting of the text- it's completely different. "DEATH STAR" is on one line in the '77 version, on TWO lines in the '04 version:

Yeah, and what is funny to me about all of that is it makes way more sense for "DEATH STAR" to be on the same line than "planet"; IMO the formatting was way better the first time around.

So yeah, EVERYTHING should've just been left alone LOL

The spacing of the words in the title crawl has changed to avoid single words on a line ending a paragraph. Also note that the capitalization of "Rebel" was fixed in the second paragraph so that it matches the first.

Boris, I posted the screenshot comparisons here because you've turned that thread into such a ridiculous clusterfuck of epic proportions that it'd be utterly wasted if I put it there. Who would look at it inbetween you line-by-line fisking with your nonsensical bullshit? So I figure I'll put it here, where people are actually paying attention and reading and conversing nicely as opposed to whatever the fuck it is you're doing in that shitpile of a thread you're trying to steer people to.

And to answer THX's suspicion: No, the Editdroid set was not made by people from LFL. Although I can understand the initial secrecy leading one to believe that. What's funny is that, especially with ESB, the transfer difference is so small as to be negligible--and the guys behind Editdroid did theirs like 3-4 years ago, including alternate crawl selectable by seamless branching AND an isolated score, all on single layer, and it's STILL almost beating the Official release. Which is insane.

And if Editdroid's is that close, I'm very certain Moth3r's and the X0 kill it utterly.

The crawl, if we're looking at the starwars.com screencaps, looks re-created, if only for the color...the original color was a lot more orangish, as seen by the Empire of Dreams doc.
