Well, here's one question: did anybody ever release one that actually had the original credits and crawl in English still intact? Looks like both you and adywan had to recreate the crawl and/or credits.

I only uploaded it twice to the newsgroups. I remember there was a torrent for it somewhere right after the initial upload to a.b.dvdr and a.b.starwars. But after what happened to the people who released the original rip, I figured I probably shouldn't up mine again.

The original Xvid I worked from had the logos and crawl, but no credits. If I'm not mistaken, the original rip with the timecode had the credits.

I've added separators for each film to the list to make it easier to read, plus an extra entry briefly detailing the differences for each particular non-theatrical version.

Yes that's right, the timecoded version did indeed... so one way or another, we have the full theatrical version, credits and all. That's good to know.

Actually, now that I think about it, I used the timecoded version to make my credits. It was the only way I could have made them. It's funny because I know some of the names in my credits are wrong, as I had to guess at them because the letters were unreadable. And if you look closely, you'll see my name in there somewhere as well...

I was gonna say that too. That and the AR seemed a bit off. Of course I don't have the equipment to verify these things, just from looking.

I am not buying the last part and feel it is simply a play on words. Yes, it will be the last time you will be able to buy the OUT EP VI....as a single item.

If you mean this list here, once I've seen the official OUT releases I'll probably add them to the list as the current best source for the original theatrical versions... assuming they're worthy of it.

However, when the X0 project comes out, it may supercede that.

Edit: Updated the list to add the TV movies as well, just for kicks.

*bump*

Slight update to incorporate the [G]OUT DVD releases into the list, now replacing the various laserdisc transfers as the best source (so far) for that version.

Exception made for the original Star Wars: the [G]OUT DVD release of that is more of a simulated 1977 version than a real one, due to it being a composite of the 1981 and 1977 versions.

MODS: Can we sticky this thread for the "Theatrical Cuts vs. Special Editions" topic?

What’s this then, Space Invaders? Why did someone tell me there was retro year hidden game on this DVD?

Only the originals from the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo Dolby format 42 will sound better on DVD.

Hi, I just discovered this forum through lots of clicking through Google results. I was looking for information on the 1997 versions. Mainly, what source mine came from. I think I downloaded them around summer of 2002, but they were from alt.binaries.movies.divx and they are ~700 MB each movie except for ROTJ which is about 712 MB. The picture quality is great and they sound excellent but they don't have closing credits (except the first card). They are .avi files and appear to be from a PAL source, they are 25 fps. Resolution is 640x272. I hate when people don't post any info files with their movies or at least name the file the standard scene way. Here's some screengrabs of ESB. If anyone knows the original source, please let me know. Thanks a lot…

To tag a question onto the end of the above, is there a best set of laserdisc releases to get of the 97 edits - or are all the laserdiscs of identical quality?

The 1997 Special editions were only released twice on video. Once after the '97 theatrical run and then after Phantom Menace came out, The 2nd time was on laserdisc only in Japan I think. I'm pretty sure the releases are made from the same master so they should look the same.

I thought they came out three times.... (if they mirrored the VHS releases)

Once as is.... (with a bit of "making of the special edition" fluff)

1998?

Second time with an Episode I "preview,"...

2000?

Third time with an Episode II "preview"...

2001?

I thought the TPM laserdisc (Japan only) came out around the same time as the VHS version came out in the states. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong...

Quality might still be the same though, but I never had an LD player so I can't say.

So do the laserdiscs have the little featurettes about what was changed for the special editions? I remember my friend's VHS had these on it.

I have the SE bonus features on a fan created dvd. I'm pretty sure it was laserdisc sourced. In addition to the documentary that was also on the vhs tapes, there were also slideshows of concept art plus all three special edition trailers. The '04 bonus dvd only had one of the SE trailers. I thought the second release of the SE box set on vhs was designed to tie into the saga numbers since it must have come out the same time as the Phantom Menace on video. I only saw the Jedi tape and it had a starwars.com promo with duel of the fates playing with clips of the 4 released films. Was the episode II preview only on one of the tapes.

I got a copy of the PAL SE 4LD boxset the other day - and at the end of the JEDI 2nd disc it has the 3 featurettes on the new features in the 97 cuts, so they are on there - but didn't see any sign of the trailers...

I'm wondering, is there a difference in the sound mix on the PAL and NTSC SE laserdiscs? I heard that you can't get AC3 on PAL laserdiscs, so does my set have an inferior mix to the NTSC one or is it the same mix under a different name..?
Author

Answered my own question on imdb and an extensive google search; that's shitty only the NTSC discs can have the AC3 - and the SWSE set seems to have a few more extras, although atleast laserdiscs are cheap now, will have to score an NTSC set on ebay at some point when I get an RF Demodulator.

The SE's were released in the US on laserdisc as well (in a boxed set only). I got set new from Columbia House several years ago. The discs are CLV/CAV hybrids and it includes a LD-sized gate-fold insert. There are some bonus features starting with chapter 41:

41. Theatrical Trailer (side 3- end of ANH)

50. Theatrical Trailer (side 6- end of ESB)

53. Theatrical Trailer (side 9- end of ROTJ)
54. Featurette
55. Fleshing out the Characters
56. The Limits of 1977 Technology
57. Visual Enhancements
58. The Sound
59. The Empire Strikes Back
60. Return of the Jedi
61. A New Musical Finale
62. As It Was Meant to Be
