Remember the mass advertising of TPM? — Page 2

Why is it that mothers always want to throw things out?

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I've still got my set of 4 ROTJ Coca-cola glasses from Burger King! My Aunt has a Luke glass from the first film, that I've been coveting for years.

Plus, I've still got 2 ROTJ Oral-B toothbrushes (from 1983- and they're still unopened, thank you very much!)

For some reason I feel ROTS was the most agressively marketed one.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

As Zion said it is in their job description or at least it is for most of them. The only other option is the “pack rat” mom such as my wife and most grandmothers I know. They keep everything so when you go to look at your old boxed up Star Wars figures they either a) can’t be found or b) are crushed under old books and shit with the once pristine packages crushed. But I’m not bitter or anything.

I am quite convinced that the merchancising can take much of the blame for the massive dissapointments that Episodes 1-3 were for many fans and critics. It was an example of franchise that generates so much hype. In the end when the product does not meet the hype, the product crushes itself under its own weight thanks to cross-over merchandising. Yet vendors get away with it. A good example outside of star wars and movie business, would pre-launch hype and merchanise for Halo 2. With TPM and Halo 2, everyone knew about them like it was second coming of Chirst. Talking, about stuff this makes my head hurt as it's a painful reminder of those god-awful Episode I Pepsi commecials that played endlessly on TV in the spring of 1999. At least, Pepsi ads for the 97 SE were cool. Remeber the one where Darth Vader has lightsaber duel with a man using flash light as lightsaber... priceless!
Howard Dean says "YEEAHH!!!"
Darth Vader says "NNNOOOOOO!"

-That's a good analogy.

I remember those energizer comercials for the '97 SE... or was it Duracell? Anyways I remember that commercial where two people are fighting with lightsabers and one of their sabers burns out and the person takes it apart and checks that batteries and then gets pissed off to find out they died in the middle of the fight and then sees and energizer bunny move by, that was a good commercial.

Yeah, that was Darth Vader and the Energizer Bunny fighting. Vader's batteries die and when he checks them and sees that they're not Energizer batteries, he lets out a groan.

Well, it starts out with the scene between Vader and the Emperor, where the Emperor says, "There is a great disturbance in the Force," and that disturbance is... ta-dah! The Energizer Bunny!

That one actually dates back to 1994. It was one of the only Star Wars commercials shown during the "dead years", and certainly a welcome surprise to fans.

I don't think TPM would have been any better received if there also hadn't been an offensive marketing overpush. The film was terrible, and would have been loathed on its own demerits quite sufficiently.

OMG, one of the last remaining bits of Star Wars memorabilia that I haven't given away as gifts is a quadruple set of the Burger King glassware from the RotJ publicity push. Alas, since they also fall into the category of stuff I haven't used in decades ... some lucky fan friend of mine is going to find them under birthday wrapping at some future date.

In marketing terms, Christ is relying on grass roots. It is up to the Church to watch for him, and if they let down their vigilance, he will come upon them unexpectedly. Lucas, an anti-Christ in this sense, performed a great deal of top-down marketing -- the theological equivalent of Christ getting a Superbowl commercial announcing the exact time and place of his return. And the really ironic thing is, Lucas had a vigilant Church, but proceeded to do the top-down thing anyway, then his innovations made apostates of us all.

I don't know about Halo 2, because I never saw any advertising for it outside of the usual big box circulars. It was an entire order of magnitude behind what TPM got.

Oh boy do I have memories of TPM advertising. KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell all had toys for months, long after the movie was on video. They also had these little round cardboard things to collect with charecter's faces. All the meals had images from the film on it. There must have been about a million kid books of the movie, and there was a lot more than that too.

AOTC was kind of like this, though on a much smaller scale. ROTS even smaller.
