Saber fighting as kids....

I thought it'd be cool to have a thread to find out... how many of you guys played with those Hasbro lightsabers they used to make, when you were kids (if you're that young).

I used to duel constantly with my brother (and friends occasionally), sometimes choreographing it and sometimes not. My brother would always provide the lightsaber noises

I had both the Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader lightsabers back in the day, but I always longed for a blue one like in the first two movies. I got a friend of mine to help me act out the saber fights from all three movies. Of course, they had built-in sound effects, so I didn't need anybody to recreate them. I stopped buying when the prequels came out, and they started making those extremely low-quality sabers.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Oh yeah! I remember my brother always wanting a blue lightsaber, which I don't think they made at the time.

I had whatever Darth Maul one was biggest. It was the best of both worlds, I could use one or both. But like almost all random children lightsaber fights, it was fun but retarded looking. I'm sure I'm not the only one that knows that you can really get into lightsaber fights and more than once my parents thought me and my brother were beating the hell out of eachother with big plastic sticks. But really, my fingers were the only thing to ever get hit and keep hurting.

I loved those. Sure they didn't glow or retract, but as a solid blade they made for great dueling.

Funny enough, the Master Replica FX sabers are better for dueling than the toy sabers.

The plastic sabers Kenner made around the time Empire came out made their own buzzing noises when you swung them. No batteries needed.

Where were you in '77?

Yeah, they had a whistle at the top that made sound as you swung it through the air. I've never had one, but my nephew did.

Meh. When I was a kid, none of my friends or I had plastic lightsabers, primarily because they didn't exist at the time. So we improvised. Sticks, broom handles, yardsticks and umbrellas all got pressed into saber service. At least I always had the best mouth-made sound effects, no matter what I was fighting with.

I usually kicked ass at it, because so many folks thought the point of swordfighting was to smack the other guy's saber with yours. That mindset leaves you ill-prepared to defend against a swipe at the legs...

I was an original 1977 Star Wars generation kid, so at first the only lightsabers that were available were the Kenner ones that were basically a flashlight with a yellow inflatable blade. Oddly enough, though, nobody I ever knew seemed to have one! Of course I wanted one too, but I never did get one... seems like they were hard to find, and not around for very long. I finally picked one up at Celebration 3, many years later, and it was cool finally getting to see what they were like. Of course they wouldn't have worked very well for dueling.

I remember using those plastic lightweight Wiffle ball bats as lightsabers. They were yellow, too, so you could imagine they were like the Kenner sabers. But the best sabers my friend and I ever had were actually golf clubs with the club end broken off and the broken end crimped down. They were fantastic for duels, though they hurt like hell when you got hit on the fingers. We had to be covert about them because our parents thought they were potentially dangerous. They cut down thistles and sticker bushes like butter, though!

Actually, MR sabers break fairly easily (unless they've fixed that by now). You can fight with them as long as you're careful. If you hit them to hard, the blade snaps at the hilt.

I use to fight with the Kenner ones all the time. That was a lot of fun. Now I fight with Parksabers, which is a lot more fun since the blades don't break

Those were the days. They don't really have cool non battery operated toys anymore do they? The whistle thing on the blade really was a neat idea for the time.
Remember the old Falcon and X-Wings? They were battery operated but all they did was make this electronic buzzing sound. I remember the Y-Wings was my favorite because it had the turrent on the top that swivled and had a place where you could put R2 or R4.

Long before they came out with the telescoping sound FX things, we would take broom handles and make a hilt out of duct-tape or electrical tape. We would do actual dueling but it sometimes got pretty painful on the fingers. Honestly the most fun was when my friend and I would plan out a certian fight, we would practice it for a bit in slow motion and then eventually get to the point where we could really go fast and look like we were having a real duel, we would show off with it whenever we got the chance and impress the other kids who didn't know we had the whole thing planed.
