Anyone got the original 'theatrical' release of TPM or AOTC? — Page 2

Yeah, I did say it didn't bother me as much. I mean, it's a change, so I have to hate it on principle. I still felt it was a bit unnecessary, though, as Qui-Gon's line gave the scene much more closure. Honestly, if I was the director or editor, I'd have a hard time cutting it, but I think, overall, it didn't really need to be there and did more harm than good.

That's quite possible. In general its good to do more with less. Superman Returns could have definitely used less scenes (and cgi). A lot of movies today could. Why does every film have to approach three freakin' hours?

I like the air taxi addition simply because I never quite understood why Anakin would just wander away from Qui-Gon like he does in the theatrical version since Qui-Gon was basically made his gaurdian.

Thanks to Russ the article is now live. As soon as I have the TB releases of the original trilogy I'm going to begin updating the older comparisons in anticipation of the new DVDs.

That's very interesting- thanks! I can't believe they cut Warwick Davis out of TPM.

Wait, what? I know I've seen him in my DVD.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

At the end of the podrace there is a shot of him.

I know, I notice it every time I watch it, but Mielr just said he was cut out of TPM.

On Mentasm's site it said that Warwick's cameo was cut from the DVD- (I don't have the DVD so I can't check). Maybe there's still another shot with him.

Yeah, I remember seeing him as well. Then again, I have the VHS version also. Not really in the mood to watch either one to find him, though.

I know that Rikter has the TPM LD, but it appears the screenshot was already acquired.

"This is another scene that slows the pacing of the film, although it does allow for some nice visual effects shots. It also gives Jar Jar another couple of lines of dialogue…"

Figures on both counts....

"In this instance, the extended dialogue actually goes some way to explaining the ease with which Padmé forgives Anakin’s crimes."

LOL....yet another instance where anything that could help make sense of the story is cut. Thank God we got a longer taxi and pod-race sequence, though.

The DVD version still has several shots of Warwick in them.

I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently.

I didn't mean to imply that he's not in the DVD release, just that he's not in that particular scene any more (as the scene itself is gone).

Actually, this is an addition, not a cut.

Mentasm,

More praise for your article, which I've consulted a number of times in the past... it's exactly what I like to see for easy reference when trying to make sense out of all the little (and not so little) tweaks, cuts, and additions to the Star Wars films. I'll try to help you out any way I can with any further info I find out about.

Here's another change to AOTC: during the speeder chase through the city, a background ship was removed in the DVD release to make Anakin's flying lightsaber easier to see. I managed to grab comparison frames showing this, and T'bone has it on his site here (see the text near the very bottom, and the accompanying comparison picture). Unfortunately, I only had a crappy camcorder copy of the theatrical version for reference, so that's the best shot I could get.

Regarding TPM: the VHS release came out a good while before the DVD release. While I believe that it was the same as the theatrical version, just like the laserdiscs were, at some point I thought there were some small differences between the VHS version and the theatrical version. In particular, something during the pod race sequence, it seemed. But I wasn't able to find anything, so I assume they are the same. Has anyone heard differently?

Good spot. That has to rank as one of the most useless changes of the lot! I'll add that into the article when I get five minutes to do proper caps, although the Ep 2 theatrical DVD leaves a lot to be desired...
