The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released) — Page 48

I am planning on putting some of the new material up at Youtube if I have time.

Disc space is getting tight on the Recobbled Cut, so no, no Warners trailer. It's over 6 minutes long for one thing.

I'll put the bread scene up so that those who don't get it on their disc can still see it.

Thanks ocpmovie.

Here's a transcript of the "One Pair of Eyes: Dreamwalkers" documentary:

Here's hoping that the new Bread clip is on my copy of the Mark II DVD whenever I get it, but I won't be too disappointed if it's not. Thanks for posting it like you did, I find the scene very amusing if badly-paced.

I used to be very active on this forum. I’m not really anymore. Sometimes, people still want to get in touch with me about something, and that is great! If that describes you, please email me at [my username]ATgmailDOTcom.

Hi everybody. You’re all awesome. Keep up the good work.

Tahir actually sent the entire "One Pair of Eyes: Dreamwalkers" documentary, but ******* only transferred the Nasruddin material. I wasn't that interested in the rest, but it would be interesting to see.

I am Youtubing the animated commercials reel now, as well as the Warners trailer.

Here's a guy who isn't too happy with the old Roger Rabbit NES game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx7fgev3xQ0

I played the Roger Rabbit game cos I liked Roger ... but it was weird and complicated and hard. Pretty open-ended, which is interesting. I think it WOULD have been good years later with better technology to do the sort of free-wheeling detective story they were aiming for.

The clip of the King poking his head out of the tent isn't timecoded in the Warner's trailer - will you be using that in Mark II, or is it too late?

Also, at the end of the Warner's trailer there's a nice, drawn screen that says "A film by Richard Williams". How about using that at the beginning of the film in place of the "A Richard Williams film" screen after the main title?

Is this version ever going to be released to the public as a DVD or will it just be dispersed by torrents? I don't understand torrents nor have the patience to download something this size, and my computer couldn't take it either.

I really enjoyed the patched up movie on Youtube but I've been looking for one that has better quality video. I also recently saw the Miramax version and oh my god, it was terrible compared to the Recobbled. The thief wouldn't shut up with his stupid remarks on everything. It was like....America's funniest videos show were some guy looks at a film sent and tries to say something about it to make people laugh. It was an insult to the original. I'm glad this was done, the movie deserves it

As I said, I don't really want to radically update the cut for a few scraps of mediocre quality footage.

That "film by Richard Williams" seems to be the real deal, but the quality is also pretty poor. Ditto the logo.

Some notes I want to give out for this one!

For a moment, I thought the opening of this looked familiar, when I noticed it was almost like the same video I had up to a certain point, then the new ads I haven't seen before came out! So much better quality than the crappy VHS tape with 20 minutes worth I was able to get.

Some ads of note I like to point out as rather neat ones include the one for Pushkin Vodka that almost didn't looke like it was going to be about anything in particular til the very end. The other vodka ad was rather amusing in the use of captions and corny stuff going on the screen! "Well, we're coming to the end... ...of this Vladivar Vodka advertisement... ...so we'll say goodbye... ...Goodbye!" (such a cute ad!)

Somehow I have a faint memory of seeing those ones for "Johnson's Cotton Buds", but I can't pinpoint where, but it reminded me of something I saw once many, many, many years ago when Disney Channel did a show that used to showcase animation of all sorts (this was back a little before the Eisner era so they weren't totally ruined yet). Also nice to see the remainder of that one ad with the fox character slowly morphing into a human that was on the Thames documentary.

Just like seeing the whole Frazetta-esque Jovan Sex Appeal ad. The one for Limara body spray was very good! I don't think we could get away with an ad that sexy in animated form around here! Noticed the Harlem Globetrotters one gets used a couple times in these sets as well. That ad used to be so common back then. I can remember it often being seen, but the sound would often have some announcer going off "The Harlem Globetrotters are coming to the Toledo Sports Arena October 11th. Tickets are available at all TicketMaster locations, don't miss it!"

pt. 3

Liked the one for Cup 'o Noodles here with the samurai baseball bit. Funny it was called by that name, as it's current US edition often is called "Cup Noodles" (the Japanese original was "Cup Noodle"). The quickie of Pink Panther for TDK Super Avalyn videotape was rather cute (wonder how many products did that guy pimp over the past few decades). Noticed a few ads for WGN Radio here as well. Wonder if those ads were aired on the Superstation portion of WGN in the 80's (never had WGN myself back then so I wouldn't know for sure).

The "Frosties" ad was pretty good, and I only wish they still did that like that again when it the whole thing was a big secret Tony tried to hide all the time (before the uS ads began that "Brings out the tiger in you!" crap). Like seeing the Disney gang pimp for Fanta here. I don't think I ever saw a Fanta ad on American TV back then, but I think it was very big elsewhere. I do have that one ad of them playing soccer from a Japanese TV broadcast in my video collection (I have WAY too many Japanese CMs in my collection as it is).

The one thought that really sparked my interest was the one for Long Life beer with the Tex Avery-like cat trying to reach for a pint on a window sil (not a really convenient place to put your beer at when you think about it). Of some interest, I remembered seeing this very exact ad getting represented in an animation film festival compilation called 'Animation Celebration", of which the best I have of it was a pamphlet that was probably handed out at the time it premiered at two LA theaters back in '86 (and of which I'm posting here for interest).

Of some interest, the program stated they only played 2 and a half minutes of the commercials, which makes me wonder if they just did it as a montage or only played a few as a sample then.

Kinda like noticing some of these having what looked like intros/outros that were probably put there when these things were compiled into little "showreel" type formats, perhaps to show to clients and other organizations interested in doing business with Williams & Co.

Funny to see what this was about. The announcer sounds like he outta get into doing those crappy ephemeral films like "Boys Beware" on archive.org. :-)

Here's a guy who isn't too happy with the old Roger Rabbit NES game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx7fgev3xQ0

This is where that clip orginated from...
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=JamesNintendoNerd

This guy has a few other games he reviewed as well, such as "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" that he apparently had a horrible time trying to get through a section of the game that apparently made it hard on himself by the time he discovered what it was he was doing wrong. I still kinda liked the final line when he went he wanted to nail Roger to a cross! Also the bit of him calling Jessica was cute! I hope he'll get to do a new review soon.

I played the Roger Rabbit game cos I liked Roger ... but it was weird and complicated and hard. Pretty open-ended, which is interesting. I think it WOULD have been good years later with better technology to do the sort of free-wheeling detective story they were aiming for.

I only remember playing that game once when I rented it back when I used to be an avid NES gamer. Did anyone ever call that number to find out what to do next? Somehow I don't remember ever doing that myself. I just remember being confused by that game since I was probably in the same position as this guy was!

Nowadays doing a game like this on a newer platform would probably yield much better results and you'd probably get to do more interactions with the characters and settings in the game. Imagine how neat a game like this could be on the XBox 360 or such.

I like the Limara one too .... not the best animation, but sexy with nice music .... and the bizarre 2001/Close Encounters Vodka ad.

A hell of a lot of Pink Panther ads were on the Making of Nasruddin DVD, did you not see that?

I am attempting to convert the entire reel of ads to cleaned up NTSC 24p, plus the Warners trailer, the Pink Panther ads, etc.

I am also trying to convert the Roger Rabbit Diet Coke ad into a cleaned up 24p version. Yep.

http://orangecow.org/thief/rogercoke.mp4

Roger Rabbit thinks you should drink Diet Coke.
An unusual commercial because it was clearly animated by Richard Williams Studio, possibly by Richard Williams himself ... who animated the actual feature film, so Diet Coke spared no expense. Bob Hoskins appears in new footage as Eddie Valiant, Charles Fleischer voices Roger, and that is possibly Amy Irving as Jessica Rabbit.

Thanks for posting the ad reels, ocpmovie! That was really nice to watch. I remember seeing lots of those on TV here in the UK. Don't know what year the Limara one came out, but judging by the memories it awakened, I'm assuming I was in my early teens!!

ocpmovie - Regarding the King coming out of the tent - you mentioned you were going to include the brief footage from the Allied Filmmakers trailer. Seeing that the Warner's trailer isn't timecoded and contains the same footage, couldn't you include that, or at least keyframe the bottom of it over the Allied Filmmakers footage so that the Recobbled Cut doesn't have a timecode?

Very interesting, that WB licensing trailer. When they talk about the Thief "just enjoying his job", I can't help thinking of Terry Pratchett's Guild Of Thieves - seems to fit our thief perfectly!

If I seem like I'm in a bad mood, it's because of some people at a message board elsewhere, but never mind that.

As I've said 3 times now, the footage found in the Warners trailer is not a significant (or high quality) enough find for me to do a huge overhaul of the cut so soon after completing Mark II.

Even if it were, a 2 second shot of King Nod I already have in better quality elsewhere would not be the "big find" of the trailer. I am not stupid enough to have left timecode on any shot in the Recobbled Cut, anywhere.

As a test of the Warner trailer's quality, I am considering putting in their version of the Thief bouncing off awnings, to see how significant the quality change is. But for god's sake, I don't want to be redoing this forever.

I'm leaving for San Diego and Comic Con tomorrow, early. I have NOT mailed out ANY copies of The Thief Mark II. I'm sorry. I had 30 or 40 copies burned and ready to go, a huge stack, but then the new Nasrudin footage came in and grumble grumble grumble. The timing of this just drives me nuts.

I still intend to mail a bunch of Mark IIs out without the new Nasrudin scene. Sorry.

I will be taking a stack of Mark II Thief discs to Comic Con (and a couple Mark Is that never got mailed) and probably giving them away to people. If I can get rid of enough, when I get back next week I'll eventually run out and start sending out the versions with the Nasrudin scene included. But I burned a LOT of copies without it, so.

I've been rendering material for a new NTSC DVD of the animated commercials and other things for the past 3 days. It's been long and drawn out, and I'm glad to have a break from it.

If you're going to Comic Con, I look like this. Maybe you'll see me there.

http://www.orangecow.org/1ocp/garrettheadshotweb.jpg

I'll be in a better mood when I get back. Til then, those waiting for your discs, keep waiting - you'll be better off for it if I DON'T send the discs now, trust me.

Late. Can't sleep.

Looking more closely at the Warners trailer. There's about 20 short shots in there which are otherwise only in the workprint, grumble grumble. Most of it is the Thief in the war machine. Still, there's nothing really significant enough to make me want to overhaul everything.

The Thief bouncing off awnings is in the Miramax cut so I don't need that, BUT looking closely at it, there's half an extra shot at the beginning! The final cut cuts to Tack - here we stay with The Thief for a great first shot of him falling. I prefer this cut of the scene.

On that subject, anybody play the Roger Rabbit "Hare Raising Havoc" game for the Amiga/PC DOS that came out back in 1991? Apparently it was a sequel to the "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" game. The animation and graphics were pretty impressive for the time, but it's nearly impossible to run on a modern PC. Probably easiest to just run it on an Amiga emulator (or even a real Amiga) than try to get the PC version to play ball with Windows XP. Trust me, I've spent quite a bit of time trying to make it work.

I should go try the emulator version out now. It seemed like a really fun game, and I was always frustrated that I couldn't get it to run.

I was browsing through Usenet for more insight on "Thief and The Cobbler" and found these interesting quotations -

Gregory Duffell - July 14th 1999

Ben Washam did a lot of animation in Hare-abian Nights, especially of Bugs. Harris did the Arabian guy who introduces the various acts. Harris' brother worked in the oil business in the Middle East and told Ken about desert life. The flies that surround the Thief's head in "Cobbler and the Thief" were inspired by Ken remembering his brother telling him that flies did that to him when he was working there.

octobus - Dec 13th 1998

It isn't clear if you're referring to the 1992 workprint or not. I remember older posts from you and if I'm not mistaken you left the studio in the mid 70's? A great deal of work followed. Even the workprint that circulates is missing the Cobbler's battle with Zigzag's dragon at the climax. An animator has mentioned how dreadful it was to draw all of it's scales in repetition.

Greg Duffell - Dec 14th 1998

I had a meeting (about an unrelated topic) with Jean Macurdy in the fall of 1990. Ms. Macurdy is the head of Warner Brothers Television Animation today, as she was then. In the course of our meeting she mentioned that she had been sent over to London by Warner Brothers to check out what was going on. Warners was backing the film at that point.

I told her I had worked on the film in the 1970's and I was curious as to what things were still in the film. I mentioned a scene that Ken Harris had animated of a brigand talking about his love for Salome.

IN this scene, a snake swirled around , while there was a "crane shot" slowly moving around the brigand as he spoke. Harris, who completed the scene while in the US as his "homework", told me that it was so difficult, it almost killed him...and he was serious!

Macurdy then told me the most startling thing. She said she'd just seen that part of the film in RUSHES....in PENCIL TEST!! Dick had said that it had JUST been completed. If true, this would mean that Dick might have been making so little progress on the film, he was digging into the pencil tests from almost two decades ago in order to boost the weekly footage count.
