Help Wanted: with my small OT preservation project ...

Hello friends, I’ve just started to do something which I wanted to do since I’ve got the EditDroid Discs. The plan was originally to simply multiplex the better video from the second release with all the audio mixes from the first release, but the more time I’m spending on it, the better I want to do it.

So what should it be ?
Disc 1 : The recreation of the 1977 movie - that means the original crawl (non-“episode IV”), plus the mono mix, the original stereo mix + a 5.1 mix (which would be my attempt to recreate the original 6 track mix) + isolated score mix. Video would be a combination of the new EditDroid release + Empire of Dreams. It will also the Mark Hamill TV intro & outro (probably selectable).

Disc 2 : A “repaired” version of the Special Edition - correct lightsabres, removed garbage mattes, corrected editorial misstakes… This one will also have a new commentary mix created from the official one and a lot of interviews.

Disc 3 : The Documentaries - devided in 3 sections - Pre-production, production & post-production (exactly as the Alien Quadrology bonus discs) with brand new documentaries created by me from many sources, all scripts as slideshows (Alien Quadrology owners understand), and of course the Deleted Scenes in post-production section (all I can find, not just the common “Bigs scenes”).

Disc 4 : Star Wars Legacy - the holliday special, the making of star wars as told by c3po & r2d2, the muppets show …

I hope I’ll make it till christmas

But I need help:

  1. The opening crawl - has anybody this ? The EditDroid discs have a recreated crawl, which doesn’t look right compared to Empire Of Dreams I tried to combine the incomplete crawl from EOD with the EditDroid crawl, but you can guess how it looks like. Does anybody have the original crawl or at least a better-than-EditDroid looking recreation ?

  2. The sound mixes - I thougt that at least one of the EditDroid discs will have the original stereo mix but some trustable people here claim they don’t . I’ve read here that Neil has the TRUE theatrical stereo mix and many of you also. Can somebody upload just the audio somewhere ? I mean somewhere like e.g. rapidshare or mail , because I’m not getting online from home, so bittorent or usenet are not an oppinion for me. I’ve read Neil made a flac file - would be ideal, or maybe even mp3.

And what about the 6-track mix ? Any ideas ? The only thing I know is that it disn’t have the “The tractor beam is coupled to…” line and that is definitely not enough for recreating the mix !

  1. Deleted scenes - I have only Deleted Magic and Return Of The Ewok, does anybody have some more scenes ?

  2. English subtitles - I really need well-timed English subtitles. I’m too lazy to rip it from the official DVD and search what has been added to SE .

So please if you can help me, I will think of you when this project is done

I think deleted magic has all the deleted scenes that were actually filmed and available.
The six-track mix: it would actually be a 4.1 mix on a modern home theatre, not 5.1. The six channels were right front, left front, center, rear surround, and two low frequency channels. Since today's systems don't have this set-up, the two low frequencies would need to be combined into one channel. As far as I know, the six channel mix is the same as the standard 35 mm mix as far as audio differences go. But I could be wrong about that one. Now ESB had several differences in audio in the 6 channel mix, but that is another story...
The original theatrical stereo mix is available on the pre-Definitive edition laserdiscs and VHS releases, I think. The sound mix was redone for the defenitive edition laserdisc release. Since Editdroid is taken from the definitive edition, it would have the newer mix. I'm not sure there really is much differences between the two, but for the pure original theatrical stereo mix, one could take the audio from Rikter's DVDs, that were taken from the widescreen laserdiscs.

Incorrect - there was a remix done in 1985 as well. Also, the EditDroid disc doesn't use the DE other than video - the audio is the 85 remix, quite different from the DE mix but still not the theatrical one. There is one laserdisc that has the original, theatrical stereo mix non-time compressed. I believe Neil has capped it, if I remember correctly - you may want to ask him about it.

As far as the original Star Wars goes, ocpmovie threw pretty much everything we had into those films. Since Return Of The Ewok was later, the cut scenes included on that one are a bit better quality than what's in Deleted Magic.

Also, as I recall, ROTE has the almost-complete widescreen original Jabba scene with Declan Mulholland in it. ocpmovie spent a lot of work on compositing pieces of fullscreen Declan footage over the widescreen digital Jabba footage so the whole thing could be in widescreen, plus all of the chopping up and putting together a few seconds here and a few seconds there from various sources of video and audio. It's still missing a few bits of audio and video, filled in by subtitles and digital Jabba, but it's as complete as it can possibly be at this point from the sources available.

Othere than what's there, we don't really have anything else that was filmed for Star Wars that's made it into the public's hands.

Thanks about the info about the 6track mix, if I don't get more detailed information I'll just do a 5.1 "remix" of the stereo mix. So all I need now is the stereo mix

ROTE doesn't have "a bit better quality", it has MUCH better quality (I know what I'm talking about, I've compared the scenes in 1600% zoom).I just hope I will live enough long to get an official Lucasfilm DVD with ALL the cut scenes

And what about the subtitles ? Is there no project with english subtitles ?

"Return Of The Ewok"

LOL

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
<span class=“Bold”>JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.</span></span>

<span class=“Bold”>Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.</span></span>

So, what do you think about the video quality ? Honestly. The screencaps are done with BSPlayer during watching, so don't expect some awsome quality pics, but it gives you the idea of how it will lokk like.

Are you sure you want an honest opinion? O.K. Here it goes, but remember you asked....

Your aspect ratio is way off...nasty interlaced noise on the opening logo, and the stars have heavy ghosting, like your running a sharpening filter way too high....other than that they're O.K.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

If you want to know what I think - some people just can't wait 3 months. You'll be able to do your own time-corrected audio add-ons then (I say time corrected, but what I mean is that the video/audio is in sync all the way through the movie; as it may be slightly off compared to laserdisc).
Some were not blessed with brains.

we could all probably get 10s of thousands of dollars!

My suggestion: just wait and use the September release of the non-ANH DVD for the video source (but convert it to anamorphic) then add all of the different audio tracks you want to it, I'm sure a billion other people on this site are planning to do the exact same thing, hell I know I would but I'm a complete retard at this stuff (which is why I hold everyone who has done a preservation or edit in such high esteem) so I will just pick up one of those versions when they make there way to the torrent sites!

Yes, I asked, it's just a temporary video track, so I need other people's opinions. That interlacing stuff is really a problem, when I put the EditDroid video into AviSynth, the script's fps is 23.976 instead of 29.970, cce creates also an mpg with 23.976fps ans when I put it in DVDLabPro, it creates an 2:3 pulldown which screws up the video unbelievebly. F*ing NTSC ! Never had these kind of problems with PAL, where the fps is always 25. The stars - I was also thinking they're too sharp, thanks for confirming it.

Aspect ratio - anybody knows how tall should the black bars be ? I did it according to ADM's guide and it looks like that.

No, I won't. These *holes are NOT releasing the new discs in Slovakia because LucasFilm or who didn't allow to put a czech sound mix. And it's too expensive for me to buy it from US, it's actually one of the reasons I'm doing it.
