ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM — Page 15

Begging your pardon, but it's adequate for you. Were it perfect, it would be suitable for you both today, and in the foreseeable future. If you never foresee yourself watching it on a 16:9 television, a computer monitor, or a projector -- whether owned by yourself or someone else -- then it might be perfect. (And I'm really stretching the definition of perfect.)

Okay, you're going to have to put this in idiot terms if I don't get it. They're making a transfer of the '93 Definitive Collection, right? I mean, they said "state-of-the-art as of 1993." If that's so, doesn't that mean we're going to lose some of the "Leia Welding" scene in ESB?

Ha, ha! Maybe.

But that omission was probably just an LD mastering error. Ergo, the telecine transfer itself was complete, and we'll get the whole thing (as on the corrected DC pressings).

For those of us in Region 1 who really want the official dvd of the originals but don't feel eager to "give in", I have an idea. Why not buy the release that already has the se disc made even worse. In other words, get the pan & scan version.
I'm actually considering this idea... not for the same reasons Knightmessenger posted (as I don't think my buying the fullscreen version of the film will register any kind of message to Lucasfilm at all), but for the simple reason that I'd rather not have two of the exact same things. I already own the 2004 version of the films on DVD in widescreen, so why not get something that's at least *slightly* different? At the very least I would have the pan & scan versions for curiosity value. Some of our forum members have even worked to preserve previous pan & scan editions of the trilogy just for posterity.

It's worth a thought. I haven't decided for sure yet which way I will go, but I'm glad the idea was brought up.

Yes, they could, but they would be making things worse for the vast majority of consumers, who will be watching on 4:3 TVs. By the time HD 16:9 is standard, all SD discs will be outdated, whether letterboxed or anamorphic. Given the source, the letterbox release will actually be better for most people during its lifetime.
This shows a simple misunderstanding of how DVD and more importantly anamorphic DVD works. There is no downside for anamorphic. If you have your DVD player set properly you will not notice a difference on standard TVs.
This shows a simple misunderstanding of my post. There is a downside for anamorphic when it is scaled from a letterboxed source and then rescaled for viewing on a 4:3 TV.

The pan and scan versions of these movies will have the OOT in a widescreen format. So no matter which version of the DVD's you by, you will get the OOT in widescreen. This has already been stated by online salers like Amazon.com.

ocpmovie would do it. He's just crazy enough to bother. But it seems he's washed his hands of SW projects... at least for the time being. Maybe by the time the OOT comes out officially, he'll start thinking about it again. We need his kind of freakishness to help enrich fandom. But at the moment I have to agree his time is better spent with great projects like The Thief and the Cobbler.

Got mine in the mail the other day. There's an article about it along with the release of the Lego Star Wars II game. But no, it doesn't tell us anything we don't already know other than the OUTs will have subs (English, Spanish, and French in the US).

"...the sets will include as special bonus material the original versions of all three films as they appeared on screen in 1977, 1980, and 1983! No enhancements, no remastering, no 'Episode IV: A New Hope' on the opening crawl Star Wars -- just the original versions as you (or your older relatives) first saw them in theaters. Ewoks song and all, straight from the Lucasfilm Archives and packaged by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment."

Well, at least they're still sticking by that conviction. Seemed like they were wavering there for a bit in the beginning.

They definitely must be digging that title crawl out from other elements (a la "Empire of Dreams") and tacking it on to the laserdisc transfer.

Except wasn't the crawl on the EOD documentary anamorphic widescreen?

Oh well, I suppose it wouldn't take those ILM goons too long to get their digital erasers out and modify it...

I wonder if one were to compare the September version with the '77 bootleg and note the differences, we could all be refunded our money and report Lucasfilm to the Better Business Bureau for false advertising!

Ewok songs. Our older relatives. How quaint. They really are marketing this in a schizophrenic manner, aren't they?

I need your opinion on the letter I'm sending:

----------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr. Lucas,

My name is Billy and I am 8 years old and you made me cry by not releasing the unaltered original Star Wars trilogy in an anamorphic DVD format. My cat Snuckles is very sick and you made her cry too and she is 4 years old. Snuckles has a terminal illness and it would make her short life if you would release a hand-crafted digitally mastered version of the unaltered original Star Wars trilogy on Blu-ray format in time for both the premiere year for HD formats and the 30th anniversary of Star Wars. We are not sure, but she probably will not make it much past about the 15 of May next year.

My big brother is very mad at you and keeps using bad words when he’s talking about you, but I am not mad or use the bad words because you made Star Wars and I like Star Wars, but I am kinda mad because you changed Star Wars and even though you said it was better I still didn’t like it anymore. My big brother told me what garbage mattes were and I think just nobody likes them because they don’t have a very nice name. I think they should be called “force-lines” that way people would like them better because everybody likes the force.

Also, please release the original version of Star Wars in theaters and on IMAX.

Sincerelly,
BILLY(some backwards letters)
----------------------------------------------------------------

Should I include this line?:
I also liked the old versions and even though you said you liked the old films to match up with the prequel Star Wars movies I still like the old versions because the prequels sucked and I didn’t like them as much.

Have you guys read the user reviews for the OUT/SE discs on Amazon? Freakin' priceless. There is a lot of pent up anger being unleashed in those reviews. This may be the best and last venue to get some much needed attention to this issue.

From http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents:

"And here's a little something that's very interesting: Our friend Arnaud Calistri, who runs the DVDRama.com website in France, e-mailed me yesterday to say that Fox France has confirmed with him that the original versions of the Star Wars films to be released on DVD there will be in anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for widescreen 16x9 TVs). As many of you know, they were announced for release here in the States and elsewhere in non-anamorphic (letterboxed) widescreen only, causing a furor among fans (and rightly so). This news, if true, means one of two things: Either Lucasfilm quickly got their act together when fans complained and created new anamorphic masters for the DVD release everywhere (and it just hasn't been announced here in the States yet), or France is getting better DVDs that the rest of the world. If they DID get their act together, expect Lucasfilm's fan relations guru, Steve Sansweet, to make a massive deal about it the company's Star Wars panel at Comic-Con next week. If they DIDN'T get their act together, and France IS getting better discs, expect fans to make a massive deal about it. We'll ask all the right people to see if we can find out the truth of the matter. Of course, we'll let you know."
