Absolutely. Just give us the original versions how they first played in the cinemas, warts and all. If you have problems with the special effects technology of the time then that's your problem. Get the SE's. Me? I love matte lines and changing saber colours. Give 'em to me!

Just say NO to fixes.

Maybe we could get Jay to change the front page or something if we get enough agreement?

It could be something as simple as "We all might disagree on the details, but there is one thing we all want, an anamorphic transfer from film, not from a 1993 video master (with detail sapping digital video noise reduction like on the THX laserdsics)"

Maybe if we can get a single coherent message through it might have a chance, if anyone read all the various forums and focussed on the different things everyone wants (rather than on what they have in common) then they would throw their hands up and cry that "we can never satisfy these people at all, so why try too hard, they will all hate it whatever we do"

This way, maybe at least if they got the core right, we could do the rest ourselves, if they get the core wrong, we are no better off than we are now.

Gorram - that's the most sensible idea I've heard since the OUT release was announced.

We need a unified message - a wonderful idea, I could not agree more. If we have a straight anamorphic transfer from film, folks who want the sabers fixed and the matte lines removed can always do it themselves...I'm sure someone on these forums is capable of and will do exactly that.

From what I've read, it's clear that Lucasfilm (which certainly means Lucas himself) wants to do this as cheap as they can. Therefore I think that we should be short with our list of requests. We need to focus on what's most important, and that's having an anamorphic film transfer. Everything else one may want can theoretically be done by talented fan preservationists.

GREAT idea, Gorram! So Jay...can you start a new petition?

I kinda wish I had gone with Darth A-Hole instead.

I agree. I think this is a great idea. If we are going to get any results, the only way we can do it is to be united in our endeavor. I have been wanting to call, but I wanted to know what to ask for that would be what everyone wants. Personally, I want the original version, no fixes - it was good enough in 1977, 1980 and 1983, so why can't it be now? If we can change the petition here to ask for that, I think we should, given recent developments.

As for any bonus features (or extra requests), I second the request for all deleted scenes. Can you imagine how great it would be to see the trilogy with the cut scenes added back in, in good quality?

It bothers me that the OUT is being released as bonus material. Why not release the 1997 SE's as "bonus material" too if they are also showing GL's "creative process," on his way towards the "awesomeness" that is the 2004 release?

Anyway, let's get this petition up and running - they still aren't giving us what we're asking for. At this rate, they might as well be releasing an official version of the EditDroid set (which I love). I'll be buying LFL's set when it comes out, regardless of what happens; I think the only reason any of us have ever resorted to the means we have here has been out of love for the OT.

At the same time, let's keep kicking and screaming till we get what we want. Everything up to this point from LFL has just been an announcement - think of how many announcements of releases get delayed, for whatever reasons. Let's make the September 12 release get delayed because we are demanding what we have always wanted.

This is a call to arms. Everyone here should answer.

Also, since we will be asking for the same thing this site has always asked for, I think we already have 72,000+ signatures behind us. That's a good head-start.

andy_k_250 - there's already an email/letter/call campaign being spearheaded by The Bizzle in General Star Wars Discussion (too many threads to link them all) that you might be interested in.

As far as already having 72,000 signatures, I'm not so sure:

Perhaps a Limited Edition run of the original films along with a Special Edition release would be in order... Your devoted fans would more than likely purchase both an Original Trilogy release as well as any Special Edition versions.
It seems like this request has been met (albeit not to everyone's satisfaction).

Now I'm a relative newbie to this forum (I've lurked a lot over the past week, but this will only be post #2 for me), so what I'm going to say will probably go against what a lot of you are saying.

Here's my position: I'd love an anamorphic widescreen version of the original film as it was originally shown, but right now it looks pretty unlikely that that's what we're going to be getting.

I'm going to buy the new releases regardless (actually I preordered them through FYE.com today). Why?

  1. I own the OT 1997 SE on VHS. They're getting pretty worn out.[/li]
  2. regardless of whether or not the OUT is being considered a "bonus" feature to the 2004 OT SE, I want to see both versions.[/li]
or someone like me it's win-win (even if it's a lose on the anamorphic widescreen) because I'm replacing my crappy, worn out VHS SE with the 2004 SE and I'm getting the original version on DVD.

What about the people who already own the 04 dvd's? why should they have to buy them again?

You don't have to.

For those wanting Deleted Scenes. My understanding is the uber '07 set will have a disc of that.

That's been my hunch for quite a while now (ever since the '04 DVDs came out on single discs with no deleted scenes to speak of, in fact). But do you have any hard evidence of this yet, or is it still just educated speculation?

My prediction for 2007:

2-disc sets that mirror the prequel DVDs, with bonus discs for each movie featuring deleted scenes. Available separately or as a complete 12-disc box set.

haha nice.

I guess if LFL end up releasing a flippin' sweet set next year, I'll just have to buy them again.

I am starting to regret preordering them, although with the free shipping, rebates, and the 10% off code (FYE) they really aren't going to be that expensive...

I know that's not the point, though. The point is that we shouldn't even be having this discussion because the September releases should be anamorphic!

Here is my progress so far. First, I called the number listed on our front page. I explained my issue and was told that I should instead call (415) 623-1962. When I called this number and explained my issue, I was directed to publicity@lucasfilm.com. I have not received a response yet.

Everyone who attends this forum needs to call or write in. If you have not done so yet, please do so. If we can get everyone to call or write in, we might be able to make a difference. If you do nothing, you have no right to complain later, here or anywhere else. It's just like voting.

Here is a copy of what I sent if anyone wants a template:

===========================================================================

Dear Lucasfilm,

First off, let me please say that I am very happy with Lucasfilm's choice to release the original, unaltered Star Wars trilogy on DVD. I think it is a decision that has been a long time coming, and I am really pleased to see it.

That being said, I would really like to see three of the highest-grossing, highest-rated films in history be given somewhat better treatment in the formal release planned for September. I completely understand the financial considerations involved in the sort of clean-up and restoration that would be involved in such a product, but I really think a disservice is being done to many loyal fans here, many of whom have purchased countless releases of the films over the years.

If, as has been stated in the form letter recently issued, Lucasfilm has no intention of ever releasing a restored version (beyond what has already been done) of the original trilogy, it is my hope that the company will allow a third-party company to handle any restoration.

In the end, I think many people are interested in any changes that George Lucas has made to the Star Wars movies as well as any changes that he chooses to make to his films in the coming years. I respect his artistic liberty. I just think that people should still be given the choice to choose which version they enjoy the most - i.e. the availability to purchase a different version of the films.

In the best case scenario, there would be a huge original trilogy release, containing the following:
- the original theatrical versions of the films
- the 1997 special editions
- the 2004 special editions
- all audio track variations of each film

In addition to that, it would be really nice for Lucasfilm to add bonus material for the original trilogy in the way that they have for the prequel trilogy. What has been announced for September is the first step, but it is a baby step.

Of particular interest to me is any deleted scene or cut scene material from the original trilogy. These scenes have been scattered across a variety of making-of specials (which are all now out of print) for years; it would be nice to have them consolidated in one source, such as the original trilogy release.

It is my hope that if nothing more is done to the original, unaltered trilogy this September, that at least Lucasfilm will "spice up" this release by adding a bonus disc full of deleted scenes and similar archival material. This is something that fans have been wanting for years but have never received in a good quality form. I think that adding something like this to the set would go a long way towards pleasing fans.

I'll be the first to say that Star Wars fans go too far sometimes, and can be overly obsessive. However, this only proves that they are good purchasers. Why not give them what they want?

For the record, I will be buying the set that has been announced for September, but it is my hope that by the time it reaches store shelves, the original trilogy bonus material will be of a somewhat higher level of quality than has been originally planned.

Thank you for your time.

I've e-mailed a letter about the anamorphic video issue to that LFL publicity e-mail address, and got the same form response that was posted by Neil S. Bulk in the general star wars discussion forum. I suspect that you will get the same response. But I hope that enough bad publicitiy comes out of this that they will make some changes to this release.

e-mail all you want, but take the time and the 50c to POST A REAL LETTER!
It gets a way bigger response if piles of physical stuff pour through the doorway that has to be handles by multiple people internally, vs an e-mail address that can just be handled by a bot or some webguy who may or may not be anywhere near the company.

Send the same letter to 20th Century Fox as well. I sent mine to both yesterday, trust me, real paper letters will have a MUCH bigger impact. C'mon there are like 60,000 people on the petition here, if LFilm and Fox got even 5000 paper letters each it would get noticed by a lot of people, and could even become a news story. Put what you like in the letter, but mention the magic word ANAMORPHIC in the first paragraph.

Fire up your printer people, don't be lazy, this might be our last chance to at least get an anamorphic version.

He's got a point there. Snail mail letters are taken more seriously than email. However, I don't think anything will sway Lucas on this. He's doing this to spite us so why would he give in to our demands? (Ginormous rant on this to follow sometime later in the weekend). If we are to do this though, we should all get our "demands" straight so we're all asking for the same thing. That should make it easier for Lucas to determine "what they really want." We have to be reasonable with the demands too. Don't get too fancy and don't expect too much when right now it seems a decent quality anamorphic transfer is too much to ask. And how can you get any more basic than that? Anyway, I plan to post a novella of a diatribe later in the weekend to put things in perspective and straighten out a few facts.

I would think that asking for "extras" such as deleted scenes, bonus material and multiple audio tracks for the OUT release at this point is going to fall on deaf ears due to time constraints. The real sticking point for many of us fans is the fact that this new release will not be anamorphic but letterboxed. The demand from the fan base should be simple, we want the OUT in anamorphic widescreen, period. I, for one, am fine with the limited clean-up anouncement for the films as well as the stereo sound but I find it hard to stomach owning another release of the OUT in non-anamorphic format.
