Rereading Darth Plaugies is a treasure trove of interesting words.

Back in the day I once tried to read one of the New Jedi Order books in English which isn’t my first language, and I didn’t understand anything. Man, that was baffling.

Yes, George Lucas agrees with the Prequel Jedi about the non-attachment doctrine, and yes, the Jedi should be theoretically the good guys, while Anakin should be the one who did wrong by falling in love and feeling emotions. However, despite this being Lucas’ opinion and despite the Prequel Trilogy should theoretically convey a message favorable to the non-attachment doctrine, there are still many people (myself included) who watch the Prequels through a more pro-attachment interpretation, drawing from them the conclusion that were the Jedi rules in being wrong and that Anakin Is more a victim than a real monster. So, Lucas was capable enough to make 3 good films, but at the same time incapable enough to not being able to correctly convey the message he wanted to convey, so much so that most people interpret the Prequels in the opposite way he does. Therefore, I can only be grateful to George for his inability, because if he had managed to correctly convey the message he wanted to convey, then I would have hated the Prequels. George’s inability is what keeps me from hating them.

Moreover, most of the Star Wars authors Who worked on the Expanded Universe always disagreed with George on this topic. In fact, in the EU Luke abolishes the old Jedi rules on attachment after rebuilding the Order and allows the Jedi to fall in love and have families, teaching them to express their negative emotions in a non damaging and controlled way, instead of treating them like a disease that needs to be avoided at all cost. So, George was so wrong that even the authors who wrote novels set in his own universe openly contradicted him. Therefore, I thank not only George’s own inability, but also the EU authors who saved Star Wars from George’s shitty ideas about attachment.

I’ve realized that Finn had every right to leave on that escape pod in TLJ. He’d been forced to be a soldier his whole life, and he didn’t owe the Resistance anything. He deserved a chance to live a normal life.

I saw a post somewhere recently that basically said “Why do people who hate Star Wars spend so much time focusing on it and talking about it? Why don’t they focus on something that they actually like and makes them happy?”

And that got me thinking. Why do I focus on Star Wars? I have a love-hate relationship with Star Wars as a franchise. The one thing I don’t feel about Star Wars is indifference. When Star Wars is at its best, it’s something that’s deeply entertaining and engaging for me. When Star Wars is at its worst, I can’t stand it. There’s no other franchise where I have both positive and negative reactions to it so strongly.

I still want Star Wars to be good. And there is still some good Star Wars stuff being made. But it’s like trying to admire the beautiful work done on a garden while the house is on fire, and the homeowners insist that everything is fine.

Star Wars is just something that I can’t fully let go of. It does bring me happiness, still.

Feel much the same way. When I think too much about the past 23+ years, that delicate balance tips more towards hate. Disassociating from all that crap, effectively acting as if the SW saga ended with the Hand of Thrawn duology, helps keep the flame alive.

Suppose The Princess Bride was such a financial success that they decided that this would be a franchise with new installments coming out every year, new books and games being produced several times a year, and merchandise and advertising being pumped out around the clock forever.

The only difference between the Princess Bride franchise and the Star Wars franchise is that they managed to make two classic movies back-to-back with Star Wars and this made everyone assume that such a level of quality could actually be achieved on a continuous basis instead of George Lucas being at the center of a once-in-a-lifetime confluence of talent and opportunity that allowed for lightning to strike twice.

Ever since then people have been wistfully looking back to those first films and wondering how everything after it seems to suck, but it’s just because the first two films managed to set expectations at a level which was unsustainable for a continuing franchise. Fans don’t hate Star Wars, they’re just disappointed with inevitable mediocrity compared to prior greatness. Fans of the Princess Bride Cinematic Universe would have exactly the same reaction if such a thing were to exist.

Is that really a thing? From my experience, the people who prefer Hayden in ROTJ are the same people who think Hayden’s performance in the prequels was severely underrated, and that he was just held back by a bad script. Not everyone who prefers Shaw hates Hayden, but I seriously doubt that any Hayden haters prefer Hayden’s ghost.

And now that I think about it I realized Darth was talking shit behind Palpy’s back. It was his idea for the death star in the first place iirc and Vader saying that the force is a more fundamental power, also says I guess that from his perspective Palp’s use of the force is underwhelming.

I was thinking about TLJ, and I’ve come to the conclusion that TLJ Luke would have been accepted more by the fans if he didn’t die at the end of the movie. He could have survived, helped Rey fight Kylo in Episode IX (no Palpatine) and helped Ray rebuild the Jedi Order in a more liberal way, similar to what he did in Legends. It would have been a nice conclusion for the Trilogy, and people probably wouldn’t hate TLJ so much. Yes, it would still be considered the AOTC of the Sequel Trilogy, but people would hate it less if Luke survived.

I think Luke’s death would have worked if it felt in any way inevitable. I remember watching it for the first time and thinking ‘Oh that’s neat, Luke made an illusion so that he could live’, and then he goes and dies immediately afterwards. Sure, it’s established that Rey would die if she projected herself across the galaxy, but Snoke can do it without breaking a sweat so it just makes Luke canonically no more powerful than Rey and weaker than Snoke, a guy who dies in one of the most embarrassing ways imaginable.
