The Kenobi Movie Show (Spoilers) — Page 33

It could be a stranded Neebray, a space-dwelling large creature similar to a cross between a whale and a manta ray. It appeared in Clone Wars.

One thing that seems incongruous to me, is Kenobi’s general demeanor. In the OT, Guiness played the role with an upbeat personality, leading a quiet but seemingly contented life, and more than willing to reveal his Jedi skills, even on Mos Eisley. Ewan, by contrast, is really dour and bitter (unsurprisingly), and afraid to mention anything about his past even to those close to him. I wonder if the producers will make any effort to transition ObiWan from a broken and bitter middle-aged man, to the sprightly and even upbeat old wizard.

I believe this is a big part of why they made the show. He’s actually going on a character arc.

That’s my take as well. He’s newly on the run/in hiding. Fifteen years from now (in universe), he’ll most likely be much more settled in to his hermit existence.

This is set in 9 BBY, so he doesn’t have 15 more years on Tatooine, only 9.

I decided to watch the two episodes again in light of the few negative comments in this thread. I have to say I disagree with all of them. Two excellently made episodes, fantastic acting, fantastic casting, fantastic writing, fantastic sets and costumes. I really don’t understand the negative comments. This feels like the world between Eps III and IV. More than Solo or Rebels. I don’t think this series will have the massive impact of The Mandalorian, but only because there is no Baby Yoda. This series really ties in and explores the characters of the surrounding movies (in just the first two episodes!) and promises to be quite a ride. Can’t wait to see Hayden as Vader. Just what we have seen so far the suit is so much better than Ep III.

Obi Wan is said to have “risen above” much of the emotions and trauma that scarred people during the Clone Wars by the time Mail finds him (which takes place maybe… 3-4 years before ANH?

I would imagine that it took him time to reach that point of understanding and wisdom.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

I bet that’s what will happen maybe in the final episode of the series, since Obi-wan has already tried to contact Qui-gon twice

After the sequels finished, I started to get pretty annoyed with Lucasfilm and their direction… now with the Disney+ shows, it feels like a bunch of friends playing with their action figures and making something fun.

My expectation is some fun moments, cool visuals/action scenes and an alright-good story. Disney has proved they are NEVER going to reach the storytelling heights of the OT, and I’m glad to see them just trying to tell some new stories.

Absolutely this.

Lucasfilm have realised they won’t often hit those storytelling and “magic in a bottle” highs of the Original Trilogy, and instead will give more us more new stories done in a more uninspiring and “formula scifi tv” series, with the occasional sprinkling of old Star Wars magic here and there.

It is shame that this series, so anticipated for years, has so low production values so far.

The Inquisitors are fairly awful all around to the point of distraction. Even the acting, which is surprising and disappointing given the strong performances from the actors in their other work.

The acting from everyone else is strong as expected, and the overall story is obviously compelling, but as others have already posted, it is not executed very well in thees first two episodes.

I hope the coming episodes improve upon what we’ve seen so far, but won’t be too surprised if they don’t.

I regret to report that certain people are being racist knobs towards a black actor in Star Wars. Again.

Yep Disney’s doing that thing where they call fans a bunch of “-ism’s” and “-phobe’s” because they criticize one of their characters or movies. All so tiring. Singling out a few trolls that are saying racist things to get a reaction, while the overwhelming response from fans has been about her terrible acting. Has absolutely nothing to do with skin color. The fact they put those articles out beforehand warning Moses Ingram of “racist” comments from fans, tells me they knew the character was bad and going to cause issues, and are now going to use race to shield it from any criticism.

It’d be great if Disney and Lucasfilm would stop intentionally causing riffs in this fandom. I felt the fandom was starting to come together again after the sequel trilogy debacle. But here we go again.

That is a disgusting and wrong-headed take that downplays the amount of terrible comments about Ingram.

It’s not “deflection,” it’s the truth.

Time for a gentle reminder about Rule 4. Let’s keep the discussion focused on the series please.

All I’ll say before moving on is it’s wrong to conflate valid criticism and racist remarks. That is not what Disney is doing in any way, and opinions on the writing/acting are not the most important issue at hand here. I’m very glad the Star Wars social media account made a post to make it clear racist fans are not welcome. That should be common sense, and should certainly not earn them any backlash.

As for the series itself, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Reva now she’s committed high treason. Presumably she’ll attribute the Grand Inquisitor’s ‘death’ to Obi-wan, but we know he’s not actually dead, so she might be in trouble soon.

I’m also looking forward - since we’re mostly now past the trailer footage - to see what planet(s) Obi-wan might be visiting next. Deborah Chow has said she enjoys when a story has variety and visits multiple locations so there may be some more imaginative and expressive locations coming up.

I agree that not every project can hit the magic and achieve epic popularity. Disney had known this for a very long time. It isn’t a new thing for them.

It is shame that this series, so anticipated for years, has so low production values so far.

I don’t get how this has a low production value. That just baffles me. I’ve watched the first episode 3 times and as good if not better than any episode of The Mandelorian. I get it if you don’t like it or don’t like some of their choices, but blasting the production quality of something this well made just blows my mind.

After watching the first two episodes, my overall opinion is it seems decent enough but my main gripes are:

  • Moses Ingram’s acting (just subpar acting on her part; my goodness, she has all of the charisma of a two by four…that is to say extremely wooden). And this is probably the biggest issue (because I’ve got a bad feeling that Reva is going to be playing an ever increasing role in the coming episodes and she just doesn’t seem to be a very good actor).

  • Leia’s chase scenes are ridiculous (she toddles around at three miles per hour and this somehow leads to extended chase scenes with grown adults). And speaking of Leia, while it’s fine that she is ultra-perceptive (like when she senses her cousin is afraid of his father and such), the long spiels she goes on are far too mature for what is still a very small child.

  • While I appreciate them trying to give Obi-Wan some sort of character arc, he is presented as far too down (feeble and afraid). I get it, he’s feeling bad because of the recent events (Anakin’s fall, the rise of the Empire, etc.), but c’mon, does he really need to be SO SAD AND AFRAID that he can barely use the force anymore, refusing (at first) to even go help Leia when she is kidnapped and can BARELY even bring himself to save her when she falls? I mean, he IS STILL a Jedi Master.

But, like I said, I’m enjoying it enough to continue watching (Ewan McGregor does a fine job as Obi-Wan, as usual), but hopefully they can tighten up a few things going forward.

Actually, I have. But if they wanted more realistic chases, they should have hired a different little girl to play Leia (because this little girl apparently doesn’t know how to run; it looks like she’s actually toddling around (my seven-year-old daughter runs faster than her)). They should at least have given her some sort of head start (or have her further away from her pursuers to start with), because what we got was her toddling away, her pursuers quickly closing the gap–quick cut, now she’s 30 feet away; her pursuers quickly close the gap again–quick cut, now she’s 30 feet away again (it’s like the chase scene in Hot Fuzz, only it’s not supposed to be a joke).

I hardly blasted the production quality. I said it was a shame that the production values for this is so low for the episodes we have seen this far.

Me saying that blew your mind? Really?

Okay, then I’ll try and expand upon what I said. To me it looks cheap in places, certain scenes in the desert, the rooftop fight, Revan spinning and twirling her way through it, and the fake Jedi’s “office”. I found them to look cheap and uninteresting. Costuming, editing, cinematography and camera placement also looked off. That could The Void, or other factors, but they were jarring to me and appeared cheaply done too.

To me The Mandalorian looks superior to this from a production standpoint. This series so far is on a par with BOBF, and not the quality episodes featuring The Mandalorian. That new Andor teaser looked to have superior production values than this (though only a teaser, obviously).

So far Kenobi has given me the feel of a modern “sy-fy” sci-fi show shot on a budget and tight schedule out in Canada. Not a well-funded limited series by Disney+ with the technical know-how and experience of Lucasfilm, who have re-tooled the story (as both a film and TV series) and spent some serious time on this show. To me this is a flagship series, or should be. Bridging the Prequel and Original eras, and possibly the fans of those trilogies, with a much anticipated story of one many fans’ more endearing characters, played by an actor that even the most ardent Prequel critic would acknowledge did a solid job with the work given him in the Prequel films.

The Kenobi story is compelling, the execution and feel of the show so far is not. The acting is strong, Inquisitors apart, as originally posted this is surprising given the quality of performances on their other projects.

Again this just for the two episodes we have seen so far. I’ll gladly eat humble pie if the remaining episodes have better production values to them.

If there is a “two-hander” episode with just Ewan and Hayden talking and building up to future confrontation then the production values won’t matter as much. The story, the acting, the build-up is what really matters here in this series. Yet so far, when it is opened up to set the scene, or showcase the backdrops, or attempting to show off (like Revan on the rooftops) then that is where it is suffering production-wise.

But that’s all just my opinion. I’m glad you are enjoying it, and others too. I hope that goes for the future episodes of this as well.

You know what the disappointing thing about this part of the episode was? She could have just taken out the ol reliable helicopter lightsaber and avoided all the rooftop parkour by just sailing off into the sky. The opportunity was right there and they didn’t take it.

This isn’t actually a plot hole because the helicopter ability requires one season of TV to charge.

I don’t think the production value is bad. I think they just needed to fill the sets with more stuff other than containers. Unattended Containers are stacked up everywhere. The fake-jedi’s office is a huge room with a lone desk in the middle. The streets, alleyway and rooftops are clean. They need to scatter around debris and garbage and knickknacks, stuff like that to make it feel lived in. But I think the Volume FX looks great, at least in standard def.

No, they are not doing “that thing where they call fans a bunch of “-ism’s” and “-phobe’s” because they criticize one of their characters or movies.”

After the actress posted some of the racist abuse she had received online, the Star Wars twitter account posted:

“We are proud to welcome Moses Ingram to the Star Wars family and excited for Reva’s story to unfold. If anyone intends to make her feel in any way unwelcome, we have only one thing to say: we resist.
There are more than 20 million sentient species in the Star Wars galaxy, don’t choose to be a racist.”

The Star Wars account was obviously not criticising people who have problems with her performance.

Nor was it “using race to shield it from any criticism.”

There is nothing wrong with what the Star Wars account posted. In fact good on them for calling out the racism sent her way, and racism in general.

It appears you may have some issues with racism being called out. Those are just your issues, thankfully.

And also issues for racists, I imagine.
