Right. And some of the early script drafts and McQuarrie sketches predating the fourth draft suggest Lucas was even thinking of having onscreen nudity like in THX 1138.

You said that already, and there’s no proof! The only evidence you have is some very rough sketches, and drawings like that always show figures as being nude so that drawing clothes over them can be easier. There’s no evidence beyond that, so I’m inclined to think it was never intended.

I only asked about the cut Walrus Man decapitation scene because the severed arm gif reminded me of some pics I found online.

It appears the film’s violence was originally stronger, before being toned down to appeal to a family audience.

Actually, it was the reverse. Lucas intended the movie as a relatively light, family friendly film, but added the scenes of the burning homestead and Walrus Man’s death in order to secure a PG rating. On set of the movie, they filmed the severed arm shot, but it didn’t look right. They experimented with having Ben cut his head off, before deciding to just reshoot the severed arm.

“You can make this picture for teenagers, late teenagers, early twenties, or you play it for kids, and that’s what we’re going for, eight- and nine-year-olds. This is a Disney picture.”

  • George Lucas, quoted in Dale Pollock’s Skywalking

Sounds to me like GL considered more than one audience for which to tailor the film. But I’m sure this won’t do anything to convince you that SW wasn’t always intended as a “Disney picture” from the get-go.

It won’t, because there’s nothing in that quote to convince me that he ever intended it for a different target audience. He was heavily inspired by the old adventure serials of his childhood, and that’s the feel he was going for. I’m not saying it’s just a dumb Disney movie, there’s still plenty of stuff for adults to enjoy, but it was mostly intended for a family audience.

The original severed arm? Would that be the weird, cup/bowl-like hand, instead of the hairy paw that’s in the final film? I think I saw footage of the original version somewhere, or maybe it was a b/w pic?

Yep, that one. You can see black-and-white footage of it in the Lost Cut version of the scene, here:

How is Star Wars being originally intended for children up for debate?

I’m sure George’s ideas about Star Wars changed many times as he was making it over the years. How could they not? My own ideas about Star Wars have changed many times too. People make Star Wars their own, and in my opinion it’s that aspect that makes it suitable for absolutely anyone, regardless of intentions.

Either those bonus discs are going to be a real waste of storage space, or we’re getting a considerable amount of bonus content for the OT and PT that wasn’t on the complete Bluray set, which had just three bonus discs for the six films. The ST stuff will just be the same stuff that came with their recent Bluray releases, I imagine.

I didn’t look too deep into the Blu-Ray bonus features, but the one feature I did watch about Star Wars parodies turned out to be a lazy compilation of Star Wars references in sitcoms and whatnot, the likes of which one could easily find on YouTube and is not worth my time. Clearly they were stretching it thin already, so what more could they possibly have to add? The only things I can think of are the ones we’re probably never gonna get (unaltered OT and TRoS deleted scenes).

New box sets for each Star Wars Trilogy are due out on 15th April according to Amazon France.
They will very likely be repackaged releases of the 2019 Special Editions, but we can never really be sure!

Original Trilogy: https://www.amazon.fr/Wars-IV-Espoir-V-lempire-Contre-Attaque-VI-Blu-Ray/dp/B09QP3K7YC

Prequel Trilogy: https://www.amazon.fr/fantôme-II-LAttaque-Clones-III-Revanche-Blu-Ray/dp/B09QNV8KLS
Sequel Trilogy: https://www.amazon.fr/Wars-VII-Force-VIII-Derniers-LAscension-Skywalker/dp/B09QNX2LR4

Each Trilogy bluray box set has 9 discs in each set: 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Blu-ray bonus disc - for €49.99
Each Trilogy DVD box set has 3 discs in each set: just the films themselves on DVD - for around €25

Those look pretty good. I was wondering when they’d be doing trilogy box sets for 4K.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

Wow, I actually kinda like that cover art. Except they just had to go and use the awful ROTS Vader on the OT box. 🙄 I guess it must just be really hard to track down any photos of an OT Vader in the lucasfilm archives.

So am I calculating this correct, these box sets have all the same discs/extras as the saga box did?

3 trilogy sets. 9 disc each. 3x9=27. Complete saga set from 2 years ago 27 disc. Seems like it is.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

These releases will soon leak be announced on other sites soon, it is likely worth checking our own Amazon stores for more details of the content?

Has there been any more news on these releases in France?

It would be surprising if the content were different to previous 2020 disc releases. But here’s hoping. Lucasfilm loves a lazy repackaged re-release. Like canofhumdingers posted above, they can’t even get an OT image of Vader on the front of an OT boxset!

I’m interested to see the interior of those boxes.

I’m assuming the error of The Beginning: Making Episode I documentary getting put onto the disc in letterboxed 4:3 (as opposed to 16:9 as it is on the second disc of the TPM dvd from 2001) never got fixed?

Unless of course that was done intentionally for some weird reason (maybe so the lower resolution wouldn’t be as obvious? I doubt they finished it in anything higher than SD all the way back in 2001, and most of the footage is from ‘97 to ‘99 anyway). But if your documentary is already formatted for 16:9 tv then I don’t know why you wouldn’t keep it that way.
