An elegant addition for a more civilized edit.
An elegant addition for a more civilized edit.
Looks amazing!
I know this is most likely in the sound mix, but I imagine the crackly sounds will be there once the remaining saber shots are done.
The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.
They already are, yep. Just waiting for the corresponding visuals.
Yeah it’s definitely there. It’s just a couple of frame, so Nev, if you can patch it up, great, but if not I can fix that sometime in the next few days. Can you let me know which version of the shot you used, the main or the alt?
It was the shorter one, the main one I’m pretty sure.
You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Here’s a little demo of the civilian fleet, with the original audio subdued to let the comms be much more audible than they’ll be in the final product.
(There’s a shot missing visually, but don’t mind that.)

Is this how it will sound in final film or am I misunderstanding
Filmic Crossroads, Daniel L. Isidore
I’ve been working with the Captain Hux audio a bit. I wanted to try playing up the whole “playground bully” thing that Hux and Kylo have going on, so I tried to focus more on “Captain” being an insult, not just a rank. And then all of the other officers look over at him like, “Oh shoot, Hux was demoted?? That’s some hot gossip, right there.” (Note that the word “Captain” would still need to be added into the surround channels, so it doesn’t sound as echo-y right now.)

I like this new direction you’re trying out Sherlock, you’re right about the echo/surround, once it’s been polished some more this could make for a good alternative.
I do think I prefer the arrangement that came prior to this, (can’t remember if it was you or someone else, but it was the one that retained the name Hux) I definitely feel that approach came as close to perfect as possible.
I like this new captain alot better personally. The other one to me seemed very edited in.

I like this version better than the last one. Granted, it’s been a while since I watched the last clip, but aside from the obvious point to make (i.e. the missing echo), the word “captain” sounds very seamlessly edited in, replacing Hux’s former position as “General” in light of his incompetence as leader of the First Order and allowing Kylo to formally assume command from here on out. Well done, Sherlock! Top marks all around! 👏

It does seem weird for everyone in the room to know he’s addressing Hux, though. I feel he’d have to say “Captain Hux” for it to really work.
And that fleet clip is not how it will really sound. I turned down the music and other sounds so that the added fleet voices stand out much more than they will in the final edit, just so you can hear them.

To be fair, he does turn towards and looks at him when he says it. Plus, we can assume most of the people in the room are high ranking Generals or whatever.
Okay, fine. If Sherlock can send me the captain sample, I’ll bake it in.
Somewhat rough attempt at the full “Captain Hux,” if we think that way makes more logical sense.

Wow, that sounds great to my ears at any rate. If you can’t or don’t want to bake it into full 5.1, just send me the audio of the two words together and I can bake it in.
How’s the progress on the crackly saber? I’m assuming things are going well. I myself have been busy, though I think you’re attempts at “Captain Hux” sound really nice, Sherlock.

Still sounds a bit cobbled together. I honestly liked just “Captain” more. You can tell he’s looking right at him.
^ No news since last check-in about the crackly saber.
Having Hux identified by name is a subtle little thing where the movie makes sure we know his name. It’s a “I’m Qui-Gon Jinn” or “Sit down, Legolas” thing.
It is the only time the film mentions his name. That’s a pretty minor thing, though.
“Captain Hux” sounds more realistic to me, it makes the edit less obvious cuz it makes the “captain” part seem like an emphasized word within a full sentence rather than a patch in. The one with just “Captain” sounds more jarring to my ears.
I really think that “Captain Hux” sounds great. We wouldn’t have thought anything of it in the theater.
So sorry about this, Sherlock. If it’s any consolation, I really liked your take on the line. 🥲

Maybe if it had the proper echo it would fit in better. Hard to tell without it personally.

I like the “Captain Hux” best but you just need to add a little reverb (Not echo) to the new line and it should feel more natural. Nice job Sherlock.
