I suppose in regular English it would be: “Have you even read them? They were not page-turners.” So his question doesn’t imply he hasn’t read them, it’s more of a “Hey, nothing lost.”

Thank you for making me no longer hate that moment. Here I was thinking Luke was a lazy ass Jedi Master who didn’t bother to read the manuals.

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

Luke stumbles over his answer to Yoda:

“Read them have you?”

“Well, I… uh…”

“Page-turners, they were not”

Seems to me like Luke didn’t want to admit he hadn’t read them, so he attempted to make some kind of excuse in his defence, but Yoda knew what he was trying to do and dismissed them.

That’s how I interpreted the short exchange in cinemas.

Yeah that’s the one part that doesn’t quite fit my perspective. I think Luke’s line there is the only reason why people interpreted it as he never read them.

I wonder if it would be possible to remove just Luke’s line. Probably not, sadly.

I don’t think it’s necessary to change anything. Nothing is stated outright, it’s just kind of a lighthearted jab from Yoda leading into his serious lesson.

Luke could just have easily been about to say “Well, it’s been a while,” or something to that effect.

I always felt Luke was going to say something along the lines of Ash’s “I may not have said every single syllable” line from ARMY OF DARKNESS. He probably read more about them and their ‘importance’ from other sources than poured over & parsed every line like a medieval monk copying the Bible.

“That’s not how the Force works!”

And Yoda may be saying the sacred texts are not really helpful for the current mess. Times change.
Religion, ethical systems, etc. they’re supposed to teach you how to be a person who knows how to act, you don’t particularly need to run back to the owners manual and read chapter 3 again to figure out how to respond to a situation, you’ve learned and you can roll with whatever life throws at you.

“Did you really analyze every last sentence in all of these books? I don’t believe you.” (Luke is right for being disillusioned, the way things used to be when they worshipped these specific ideals and ways to run things ended up in disaster; they aren’t necessary.) “The Force is not something to study, it’s something to feel and go with the flow on.” is kind of what I got from what Yoda said.

kinda getting repetitive now, but yeah lol.

Save the Sebastian Shaw Ghost! Save the dream…!

What does anyone here think of the second attempt at Luke’s line, “the birth of her son?”

The only AI I’ve heard that is convincing is the Ben Solo one. The rest just aren’t there yet.

Another thing worth mentioning about the whole “sensed the death of her son” thingy is that the film is built around it. Leia’s body doesn’t vanish until Ben’s does because that’s when she’s completed her “Jedi path”. Yes, it may be stupid, but it’s just the way they made the film.

I know, but to me, it also came off as if Leia could see things before they happen like Anakin did. She saw Ben die like how Anakin saw Padmé die.

Not gonna lie, man… The last couple of times I’ve listened to it, it just sounds like he’s giving a big Rick Sanchez-esque burp in the middle of the sentence.

I obviously want something like to this to work out but I’m not sure if it’s feasible at all now. I think our best bet is to just stick with “Leia sensed her son” or something like that. Getting rid of words rather than trying to add them.

Can someone here please post the link that someone put in the thread where they tried doing an impression of Mark Hamill saying that line? I can’t find it anywhere.

The thing is the film isn’t built around it, it comes out of left field at the eleventh hour, there’s no build up before it and the “payoff” works fine without it. Implying Leia waited for Ben and maybe guided him across works on its own without any random fulfilled prophecy, same with Ben choosing to give his life force to Rey. If anything it robs agency from the characters to imply this is how it was all set to happen.

Prophecies and visions in Star Wars are never this hard set in stone, always in motion is the future, to imply Leia “sensed” how everything would happen some 20 years before is pretty ridiculous, not to mention nothing we see from Leia in VII VIII or IX implied she had such knowledge. Personally I hope “sensed the end of her Jedi path” can be polished to an acceptable degree, that seems to me like it would make the most sense.

Fair points, Burbin. I too hope that the line can be configured that way to sound natural.

This Luke impression isn’t the best, but perhaps they can pull of the ‘Birth’ part in the line we’ve been trying to fix.

I know Hal doesn’t necessarily want impressions, but if he were to record the line and infuse the “birth” part with Mark Hamill’s spoken line, it can work.

Tbh, I don’t like the idea of impressions, either. I really only like the actual voices of the actors coming from separate sources.

I agree with Hal and other about impressions, not a fan. At least for this fan edit.

As for the line I would think it would be awesome if it can work the whole “leia sensed the end of her jedi training” would be both a “simple” and clean line … just needs to be polished if possible to sound natural.
