Info Wanted: Star Trek TOS Bloopers - where are they now? — Page 2

I took a look at two of the (grey market) Star Trek Blooper VHS tapes I had in storage here at my place.

This tape (Video Dimensions 1978) has 3 reels:
Reel #1 First half of first season (Dark in places but better sharpness and color then the YOHO tape)
Reel #2 Second half of first season (Includes Happy Birthday segment)
Reel #3 Second Season (Better focus then the YOHO, NOTE: Missing Eddy Milkis joke and small part of the main titles segment before Shatner’s credit)

This tape (YOHO VIDEO 1997) has 2 reels:
Reel #1 First half of first season (Dark, blurry, film runs same speed as Dimensions version)
Reel #3 Second Season (Dark, blurry, Includes Eddy Milkis joke and full titles segment, film runs slower then the Dimensions version)

Each tape seems to have a separate dubbing master source that is derived from the same original 16mm prints of the bloopers. For basic quality, Video Dimensions is the winner between these two titles. But because of that small missing part of the titles sequence in the second season reel on the Dimensions tape, you still need the YOHO for completeness. You could just edit the missing bit from the YOHO video into the Dimensions’ one.

So… does it sound like a preservation/restoration? 😃

Does anyone know anything about the “Star Trek” clips on this release?

I’m not sure what the original poster has in mind.

Well, here are my preservation files, used for the video I uploaded on YouTube some time ago and now no longer available. They are all sourced from various VHS (I have several, original and copies), and for each one I tried to select the best source, sometimes mixing differnt parts coming from different sources. I also did some video adjustment and color crrection but the final result is still bad.

Reel 0: excerpt from the “Star Trek 25th Anniversary Special” (includes scenes from reels 1-2-3-4)

Reel 1: first part of the first season, probably made for 1966 Christmas holiday’s party

Reel 2: full first season, includes scenes from reel 1 and the happy birthday video for Roddenberry’s wife Eileen at the end

Reel 3: second season

Reel 4: third season, includes scenes from reels 1 and 3

Reel 5: compilation of reel 1-2-3 with better quality, released on VHS within the documentary “Forty Years of Science Fiction Television Featuring: Star Trek”

Dailies from “The Cage”. Released on startrekhistory.com website (http://startrekhistory.com/cagepage.html), those were used on the “E! Mysteries & Scandals” Jeffrey Hunter documentary (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0567719/), I suppose they were in possession of Hunter’s family

According to my research, this is all the behind the scenes material available, aside from the official releases (“Billy Blackburn’s Treasure Chest” and the wonderful Roddenberry Vault boxset).

By the way: I don’t seem to be able to access FanFiltration video (https://youtu.be/V5g5GoRSfMc), YouTube says it’s private.

Impressive collection! Sorry YouTube flagged my video and gave me a strike to boot. I think it’s the use of the Star Trek theme music that gets it in trouble.

The president of the UFP says, "Avoid this VHS tape at any cost!"The president of the UFP says, “Avoid this VHS tape at any cost!”

It’s the worst transfer I’ve come across so far. It looks like a VHS dubbed from another VHS tape, so you get several generations of these annoying picture bends.

Contains Reels #1,#2,#3 in dark fuzzy VHS defective non-quality.
Also has a brief edit of a number of out-takes from reels #1-#4 taken from some 1980’s bloopers show. These out-takes contain added (stupid) sound effects and an annoying laugh track. This is not the Reel #5 (“Forty Years of Science Fiction Television Featuring: Star Trek”) compilation. This is something else altogether. A shorter version of this outtake compilation is on YouTube in about the same bad quality. This edit just has more scenes. Also, this tape includes some of the NBC per-premiere promos in bad quality.

You have been warned!

Many thanks for that, Maab!

This is the kind of thing I had in mind with this thread: compiling the the best sources for the bloopers that we know of, possibly with some editing done to add in missing bits or bits from better sources.

I figured this one would be crappy. Generally I try to avoid any releases with bad xeroxing on colored paper, and this one fit the bill.

However, those outtakes you’re talking about: are they actually TOS outtake material that’s not included on any of Maab’s sources above? Because if so, then they should be preserved anyway, even with the bad quality and overdubs. At least until a better source can be found. On the other hand, if it’s just excerpts from the same blooper reels but in poorer quality, then let it die.

Do you have a link to the shorter version on YouTube?

1 year old message 😦. I have a VHS original copy of “Captain Kirk & Crew The Rehearsals and Blooper Tapes !!!” Copyright Glow Burn P/L 1997. It runs for approx 55 minutes. Unfortunately I no longer have a VHS player. Is this the tape you are looking for?

I didn’t find any info on that one. Any chance you could post a picture of the cover (and the back, if possible)?

Looks like one of the many bootleg blooper VHS tapes that were on the market in the 90s, typically with a color Xerox or inkjet printed cover and everything but the kitchen sink thrown on the tape. There’s probably more variations of these than anyone could ever track.

As far as “official” or “semi-official” VHS tapes of the bloopers go, though, there seems to have only been around 4-5 versions.

Thanks to Marcello. I’d love to see the original reels preserved as intended at some point in the future before they crumble…

I purchased this reel. It appears to be reel 1 as it starts with the gorn. I don’t have a film scanner unfortunately.

Would you be willing to get it to someone who does? There are people on this forum who do.
