do bathrooms/toilets exist in the SWU? discuss — Page 3

My favorite part of TFA was the barbershop scene.

Are barbershops even real? You practically never see them in films. How can we be sure they’re really a thing?

It would explain Chewbacca.

You don’t really need to see any toilets in the Star Wars universe any more than you need to see a hobbit go relive himself behind a tree in the Middle Earth. It’s pointless, kinda gross, and doesn’t really add anything to the plot. In certain films set in the real world you can get away with it because it’s something that relates to real life. In an epic fantasy setting however, including “a galaxy far, far away”, it would just be weird and distracting.

One series of novels I read back in college did have a great joke about a 20th century character trapped in a mostly medieval magical realm, having a horrified reaction to finding a chamber pot under their bed. Fortunately for them, the castle also had modern plumbing for it’s temporally displaced guests.

Well novels can usually get away with much more than films can. Similarly there a several SW novels that reference bathrooms/'freshers. In a film though you’d better have a pretty good excuse to bring it up. It’s also easier to get away with stuff in text form than visually.

This discussion is reminding me of something I read somewhere about a Star Trek writer who wrote a mention of underwear into one of his novels, only to have it vetoed by some official at Paramount because the canonicity of underwear in the ST Universe hadn’t been confirmed yet.

I guess that was before Enterprise? 😉

Paramount was notoriously anal about everything. They allegedly demanded some revisions to a novel after finding out the authors once did K/S fanfiction in their past.

I do recall a passage in the adaptation of the animated episode Yesteryear, where Spock’s reaction to using a bathroom while in Vulcan’s past is noted. But Alan Dean Foster doesn’t have any Trek fanfiction in his closet. 😉

I think this is kind of the gist of what I was originally talking about.

I think its kind of hilarious how offended some people sound in here, accusing me of practially having some kind of poop fetish or something.

ITT: PEOPLE OUTRAGED BY POOP

To clarify yet again, I don’t want a restroom scene, I don’t want a scene of any creature or character expelling excrement in any way, lol.

I JUST THINK IT IS WEIRD THERE IS A COMPLETE ABSENCE OF WASHING OR BATHING OR TOILET TECHNOLOGY IN THE SWU

The barber shop reference is less difficult to imagine. I mean I’m sure we all just assume that in outer space they use FloBees.

I’ve always thought it was called a “refresher” but in The Mandalorian, they called it a “vac tube.” Maybe a full sized restroom is a refresher, but the Razor Crest had the equivalent of commercial airplane facilities.

Bathrooms don’t really belong in a fantasy melodrama. They’re the sort of thing that technically exists in the universe, but feels out of place and vulgar in movies that focus on loftier concepts like love and war and spirituality, so they should always remain off-camera.

Edit: sorry, didn’t realize how freshly raised this thread was.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

I’d rather bump an old thread than create a redundant new thread.

oh I’m with you, resurrect away

Anyway, yes, I was immensely gratified when the Razorcrest had a kind of “facility”. THEY MUST HAVE READ THIS THREAD.

However, the one known instance of a toilet in the SWU has now been obliterated. I suspect a conspiracy.

In the canon series The Clone Wars, Season 6 Episode 4, there is a scene where Fives hides in a clonetrooper club bathroom.

This now raises the question, are all bathrooms in the SWU that dirty? /s

I don’t think anybody’s posted an image from this scene yet - in ‘Double Agent Droid’ from Star Wars Rebels, Wedge is about to the use the ‘refresher’ when AP-5 walks in on him. We don’t see that much of the room, though.

I always liked that term “refresher”. I think I am going to start using it in real life! 😃

I’m a bit disappointed that the animated depictions have sinks with ostensibly motion sensing.

I’d rather they had some unpredictable device; just off the top of my head, that could be like a chemical (or organism) that blorps out of the wall, envelops your hands (and presumably removes/eats debris or microorganisms or whatever) and then blorps back into the wall.

Alternatively, there’s just barely any hygiene at all. Star Wars is absolutely medieval/mythical/fantasy at least as much as it is scifi, if not moreso. The thought has definitely occurred to me that they just use something crude like outhouses. This isn’t Star Trek, it isn’t about futuristic solutions necessarily.

But it is about fantastical alien things, hence the blorping wall goo idea.

I’d rather they go the JK Rowling route and say they just poop their pants, except without the part that they use magic to erase the evidence.

Mace Windu’s poop is purple.

Instead of using magic to vanish the poop away, they just use the Force to “cast” it as a projectile attack against their enemies.
