Sequel Trilogy Rescoring Ideas Thread — Page 3

Has it been disproven, or was it abandoned as being his theme? I honestly had never heard about it before, and am curious if there is a legit source…

Does Finn have a theme in TLJ/TRoS? Does he have a theme at all?

There was never a source. People just speculated that it might be his theme since he was in the scenes featuring it, and the other new characters (Rey, Kylo, Poe) each received a theme. But the evidence is against it since there are moments in the film that are Finn specific without anything like that motif, and Williams only reprised it once in the next two films (when BB-8 fixes Poe’s X-Wing in TLJ - nothing to do with Finn). Since Williams reprised every other new theme he created for TFA, it seems unlikely that he would abandon just one.

More likely he didn’t have a theme, and never got one. It wouldn’t be unusual, Lando never got a theme, Padme never got a theme, Obi-wan and Luke’s themes both became more general, and Han didn’t get a theme until 2018.

Yeah, that was my bad. The source I looked at (https://franklehman.com/starwars/) didn’t say it was “made as a theme for Finn,” it said it “has the makings of a theme for Finn” and I must have remembered it incorrectly.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

I think while John Williams should have been an executive producer for the music from the trilogy, i think Michael Giacchino should have been the main composer. His work on Rogue One helped implement the old music while also bringing something completely new.

I don’t like the idea of the music in the new trilogy simply being a ‘‘greatest hits’’.

It’s probably a case similar to the prospective First Order theme, a discarded leitmotif idea used once or twice in the films as a remnant.

Good thing it’s not that and Williams brought his A game with three scores that are better than Rogue One.

^ Rey’s Theme is probably my single favorite Star Wars track

Anyone know where this is from? 'Cause I love it. I guess you could argue it’s derivative of the Imperial March, but imo it does a much better job than Giacchino’s bargain bin version that didn’t need to exist, since ANH already had a perfectly good Imperial theme.

As you can tell, I disagree with ThisIsCreation’s belief that Giacchino should’ve scored the ST. Giacchino is extremely talented and did some amazing work on Rogue One aside from that major mistep, but he’s no Williams, and even bad Williams is still Williams. Besides, it’s only towards the last film he really started to run out of steam, and even then, the titular theme of Rise of Skywalker is a new and memorable theme. TLJ and TFA both have several memorable new themes, namely Rey’s Theme, Kylo’s Theme, March of the Resistance, Canto Bight, Fun with Finn and Rose, The Spark, and probably others.

Could that possibly be a Gordy Haab-composed leitmotif for Battlefront 2? Looks like that video was posted around its release date.

Much as I love the Imperial March, loved Giacchino’s new Imperial theme as a supplement.

Rise of Skywalker is the only truly egregious score for me, while I love some of the new pieces for it (like when Kylo is on Mustafar and goes to Exegol), the OT greatest hits felt more than out of place.

I agree. In fact Giacchino’s Imperial theme reminds me of a militarized version of Williams’s motif for the Empire in ANH.

Rise of Skywalker is a mixed bag for me. The newer pieces are great as always but the revisiting of old themes feels a bit arbitrary in some moments. I wonder if I could try tweaking with the score during the victory celebration at the end.

If you send me a version with just score to picture (without original sound), I’m confident I could achieve it. Just don’t know what music to put where. My brain is just less music-focused.

I don’t mind the revisiting of old themes as much, I just wish they had been used for whole scenes instead of just moments. I mean, the ROTJ victory celebration was basically just two alternating melodies and it was hecka memorable - I’m not as inclined to remember that time they played 8 bars of the Force theme, then 8 bars of Yoda’s Theme, then 8 bars of Rey’s theme, then 8 bars of Luke and Leia’s theme, then 8 bars of the Rise of Skywalker. Although given the pacing for the movie itself, that’s probably more a result of the direction than of Williams.

It’s all direction… this movie is Abrams unleashed, going extra with all his usual nonsense but on overdrive.

Sure, let me check the scene again (IIRC the theatrical score doesn’t align 100% with the released soundtrack) and I’ll PM you with a link so we can exchange ideas.

Cool, go ham on that sequence. Make it like you wish it could be, I’ll work on mixinf it into the rest of the sound.

Does someone have any idea of what music theme could replace the Luke and Leia bit playing during the victory celebration at the end of TROS? I successfully rescored the part Yoda’s theme originally played, but the Lando scene is a tough one to crack, especially because it leads directly into the triumphant, emotional “Rise of Skywalker” theme that I won’t be touching because it’s perfect.

Did Lando or Jannah ever get a theme? Did Lando get a theme in Solo? Any other family/parentage themes?

“Lando’s Palace” was used as Lando’s theme in Rebels and in Battlefront 2.

Apparently, the “Pursuit” motif from TFA was meant to be a theme for Finn, but didn’t end up being used as prominently in the other two films. Right now, I’m trying to put it in the Rise of Skywalker.

Apparently I missed this. Great work! Much better than the original, I was very frustrated by the over usage of the Force theme in the movie.

Lately I’ve been experimenting with putting Holst’s “Mars - The Bringer of War” in TROS’ finale; it’s not technically a Star Wars piece, but it had a lot of influence on A New Hope’s soundtrack, so using it here might make it feel like it’s come full circle.
Here it is as Rey is standing up to Palpatine:

In my 3-in-1 edit of the sequel trilogy I rescored the two scenes in TRoS that opted against using music: the Pasaana confrontation, and the duel on the Death Star II.

For the Pasaana confrontation I used bits from The Cave (TLJ) and The Ways of the Force (TFA), and for the duel I used a cue from Luke and Vader’s fight in Return of the Jedi.

So, I was originally going to post this in Hal’s thread but I thought it would be better suited to put it in here.

I know that there’s been a lot of talk throughout different edits of TROS about putting in “Duel of the Fates” (either during the Sith Choir scene or during the duel on the Death Star). Anyways, I found this version of the song that I’ve never heard before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYyI659vKkg

Apparently, it was one of the first attempts at the theme (hence why it’s not as refined as the soundtrack version) and was used in several video games around the time of TPM’s release. Anyways, I wanted to put it out there for any potential editors who would want to use it!

I also want to add: that channel has some more unused and alternate score cues from across the saga and even includes the soundtrack to the original Clone Wars miniseries as well.
