Darth Vader isn't calm in the original trilogy; he has always been very emotional — Page 2

I’m not sure why anyone would argue that Darth Vader and Kylo Ren are the same character. Calm is calm. Even had his most murderous during ESB he doesn’t even raise his voice.

My point exactly. If they wanted to convey that Vader is not a calm character, but an angry character, they would have instructed Jones to raise his voice during his acting. Like I said earlier, (voice) acting is a powerful tool to convey the character. Yet he speaks calmly all the time, even in the most challenging situations.

I feel like Kylo Ren (and AOTC Anakin to a degree as well) has warped the perception somewhat of what an angry SW character has to be though. Anger doesn’t always mean rage. There are moments, even a few in ESB, were you can hear Vader seething, and he does have a few growls as well (one which ironically was removed in the SE). And, as has been pointed out earlier, within the first 10 mins of ANH we get to see (or rather hear) Vader straight up bark orders at his men, not to mention strangle a man he’s interrogating to death before he gets anything out of him. There’s so much more to anger, and acting out anger, than the unhinged shouting of Kylo in the ST.

Vader is very clearly a man with anger issues. But he doesn’t throw wild childish temper tantrums. He’s more mature and expresses his anger in more focused and, honestly, sadistic ways.

It’s why I said I liked the general direction the OP was headed but disagreed with some of his assertions. Vader definitely is a character with strong emotions. But he doesn’t lose his composure over them the way younger Anakin or especially Kylo Ren does.

In a way Darth Vader is the perfect example of the Sith. You can pretty clearly see his hate and anger giving him driven focus and making him stronger (metaphorically). But while his emotions guide him, they don’t overpower or control him.

But even when he’s truly angry (he’s as clumsy as he is stupid) when he kills one of the top brass the voice is more cruel enjoyment not rage. Then later (Captain Needa) he’s really into it with added sarcasm.

I actually think Vader’s anger level depends on the movie. Most people arguing that Vader is calm and emotionless use ESB as an example, but Vader was at his coldest in that movie. In ANH, Vader got angry a lot, raising his voice and expressing frustration often. ROTJ also gives Vader more emotion, but in the other way around: his more compassionate side that he was hiding is brought out.

And yet a lot of the most emotive lines are delivered in the exact same way, and it’s generally the same kind of malice. I find it all pretty consistent even if his actions soften in ROTJ. For example ‘I find your lack of faith disturbing,’ and ‘if you won’t join me then perhaps she will.’

You are pulling out pretty much the only example in the ENTIRE trilogy (besides “…and a traitor, take her away!”) where he noticeably raised his voice. Even throughout the rest of ANH his voice and behaviour is otherwise very calm. For example, “I find your lack of faith disturbing” is as calm as anything in ESB. And the two exceptions at the beginning of ANH happen on the same day within minutes. Probably he just had a headache that day or something.

I was looking for a better word to describe Vader’s anger, and that’s a pretty good one: Seething.

He’s not flipping shit losing his mind in anger, he’s seething.

This always came off to me, for lack of a better word, like a sort of bad cop routine. He’s not losing it in rage, this is strictly professional violence with a specific goal. He’s exerting the Empire’s will.
