True that. Watching the fires get close to here in San Diego too

Not to mention the Valley Fire in East County

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

There is no “love triangle” in Star Wars OR Empire. In ANH Han only says he’s interested in her to wind up Luke. Luke is the only one to show any interest in her but there is nowhere that Leia shows anything more than friendship towards Luke. The kiss on the cheek during the chasm sequence is nothing more than a kiss for luck. In ESB Leia only kisses Luke in the medical bay to wind Han up. The kiss she gives Luke after they rescue him is nothing more than a friendly kiss. She has already announced her love for Han by this point. Luke doesn’t show any romantic interest in her at all.

Yet when we get to ROTJ, Han suddenly thinks Luke is a rival and becomes this jealous idiot? All that has to go. Han became a pretty much useless character as it is in Jedi, but this jealousy crap put it over the edge.

I think you can make this argument because of the way it’s played but it’s not actually the case. Mostly bc the whole “farm boy rescues the princess” is inherently romantic. And Luke is clearly interested in her romantically; with Han it’s less definitive but the very nature of their contentiousness implies sexual tension - this is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

By the end of the first film things are up in the air but the princess has “bonded” in different ways with both men - basically the classic “sex” (Han) vs “marriage” (Luke) contrast. Though it’s not clear where it will go, generally speaking a moralistic story like Star Wars would reward Luke in this scenario.

I think with Empire they moved away from the Luke part of it bc of that chemistry between Ford and Fisher, which was the smart play.

I agree that by ROTJ it was way past decided but I don’t think it’s completely implausible Han thinks that Luke is in the picture. Mostly it speaks to the insecurity behind his bravado, which is a good bit of character that shouldn’t be lost.

Are you still planning on adding more rebel troop action to the Endor ground battle? Is that going to be done with green screen, or are you going to do some actual filing in the Redwoods?

We’re going to be filming in the redwoods. Covid and the fires have been a major setback to our plans, but hopefully at some point we will be able to shoot the scenes needed.

Glad to hear it’s still on the table.
Thanks for the reply.

Forgive me if I’ve already asked this, but is the edit idea of Vader saying “Your mother once thought as you do” rather then “Obi-Wan…” still happening?

Also I have a suggestion: maybe during the saber duel, when Vader walks down the stairs after having thrown his lightsaber towards Luke on the railing, he uses the force to pull his lightsaber back to him, which explains how he gets it back.

I don’t believe anyone ever found a convincingly-matched audio clip to use for that, or been able to successfully take any of the audio clips that have been suggested and make them blend seamlessly.

I’d love to be corrected on that if anyone solved the issue.

Work is continuing on processing the 2020 blu-rays to remove the horrendous static grain . Its a very long process though. Having to create multiple masked layers, lots of rotoscoping so that only the areas that need processing get processed (and to enable different levels of processing to sections of the picture) so that you don’t scrub away the detail (like the digital noise reduction has sadly done for so many shots on these new versions). It’s very tedious. So far the first 37 minutes of the film have been completed. This side of things is going to continue well into the new year, but the result will hopefully be worth it. I really wish that it could be an easy fix, just adding a layer of 35mm grain to hide it, but that doesn’t work. Yes, the final result will have some added real 35mm grain, but this film does need to end up with around the same amount of grain as the previous 2 films or it will look completely out of place when watched back to back. Some shots are beyond repair though. Shots that have had so much digital noise reduction applied than the image is blurry and lacking detail. Detail thats actually better in the older 2011 blu-rays, and those are notorious for lacking detail. So its a case of swapping out the destroyed shots and replacing them with either their processed 2011 versions or from footage taken from 4k83. These shots also have to be regarded and processed so they don’t look like they are from completely different versions when viewing. In the end though, it will result in a much better looking version of this film.

When i get bored and tired of the monotonous rotoscoping work, i like to test out what the final grade could be like. Using the 4k83 scans as a reference, i’m able to get this film to look pretty close to how it looked originally. The 2020 blu-rays, for some reason. look washed out and have a very brown tint to them. The highlights are completely flat too. Luckily these are still a better grade than the older 2011 blu-rays, so i’m not having to remove that bad blue tint that was added to the films. Fixing the highlights alone has brought out more detail in the picture but fixing the grading is really making this film look so much better. Being able to bring out colours and tints that were hidden underneath the brown flat current grade. I’ve attached a couple of comparison samples, but the best way to see just how the grading looks compared to the 2020 blu-rays is through these links:

Very nice work! Still very excited for ROTJ:R and ANH:R HD.

That image of C-3PO falling should be a meme, I loled when I saw it

This is looking fantastic! Best of luck powering through the rotoscoping.

Would you possibly make a grained/color-corrected version of the 2019/20 blu, once the process is done?

What an improvement! It never ceases to amaze me how the official releases manage to get these things so wrong, or how dedicated you are to fixing them!

Splendid work!

WOW, if anyone deserved a medal more than chewie its you, I’m dumbfounded y how much effort you put in.

On a side note I was wandering what plans you had for the ewok battle. I know that a lot of the silly stuff is going, and that there will be more rebel troops on the ground, but was far as the ewoks themselves did you have any plans on making their contribution to the battle more believable. I’m taking about a bunch of teddy bears with sticks and stones killing armored soldiers with laser guns.
If not, I think I have an idea that could work. So I was watching this video on all the explosions form Battlefront 2, and there was one that was super interesting to me. Basically the empire was attacking Naboo and they were winning but then the rebels used that hug orb thing that the Gungans gave Naboo in EP1, and it made a huge EM pulse that wiped out the Imperials weapons.
So you could do something similar on Endor, have the rebels fighting but being out matched and out gunned and then the Ewoks arrive, but are really useless and they are loosing (lots of dead teddies). Then Something happens that causes they EMP (TBH i don’t know what, maybe the shield generator causes it or something) and bam all the weapons go off. Then suddenly the Ewoks are really helpful.

IDK writing it down it seems like a bad idea, but it sounded good in my head 😕

Anyway great work Ady, you freaking space wizard.

Could we maybe use the new Video Enhance AI software method to enhance the current Adyan Editions till HD versions are about ? 🤔

Sure that would be feasible.

I rather would wait for ANH and ROTJ in 720p and the artifacts free ESB and AI scale all three movies up to 1080p or even 4k.

I’d still love to see one of the OG ANH:R, not only because it seems like it’s going to be a long wait for the 720p version but for preservation. There are some things that are going to be changed for the 720p version after all. Honestly if I can figure out how I’d be willing to do the upscale myself.

Artifacts free version? What do you mean?

There are some blocky artifacts in some dark scenes.
Like in the scene when Luke comes out of the connection tunnel into the room where he gets pelted by Vader and then falls through the window on Bespin.

It’s better visible in motion.

I think that was a masking error or so.

As far as I can remember, Adywan meant that he will fix that with the next release of it, together with ANH and ROTJ.

I’d love to use Topaz Video Enhance AI on Adywans current releases but sadly my little HTPC’s CPU is not beefy enough to use the software
