I would have liked for Ep9 to follow TLJ’s lead in Rey’s identity as she would forge ahead with building herself up as the heir to the Jedi. However, if they want to have her struggle with inner darkness, I think TROS on its own as a film benefits more from having a Palpatine lineage than what it would be if we removed it via fan editing.

Arguably, though, I took the opposite approach to handling ROTS by undercutting a dramatic punch for continuity with ROTJ. But even then there are both versions available.

I like the “what? how?” moment personally, and it was one of the choices in the voice pack. I thought it was less on the nose than “oh, that’s not fair.” I think it’s good to have the KoR say something on Exegol because that’s the only time in the movie that we hear the vocalizations that axlanian and krausfadr worked to match (as they get beaten).

That’s the KoR getting beaten, not axlanian and krausfadr. I’m pretty sure they weren’t under any duress while working on that.

Oh yes, the “oh, that’s not fair” was too campy/silly. By far. Maybe for my personal taste, I’d imagined a one word reaction, like just “what” “how” “wait…” or “no!” or something. It might be because I have been looking at this material without the KoR VO for so long.

Can I have a link to this please.

Thanks, Muffy! Very glad you enjoyed it. I don’t know what I’ll say during a commentary; my life hasn’t afforded me as much time to ruminate on this film compared to the others but I guess I gotta do it.

The KoR voice project had different options for dialogue, so I just picked the ones I preferred. And some I didn’t use at all.

The ice wall audio is super tricky and convoluted. But I will revisit it again and see if there’s anything else I can do. Knowing that it sounds like the music drops out helps! Perhaps dropping in a little bit of music that halfway matches would help.

I am really loving workprint 6! Such great work. Haven’t checked out 6.1 but I have KoR notes if there were no significant changes there.

Love the addition of “traitor” but if there are any more takes with a “rebel scum” level of disgust and hatred in the voice acting it might punch more? (It did stand out to me, that duplicated audio for traitor but I am reading you already resolved that in 6.1)

I don’t think anyone has said this yet, but I feel like the “what?” / “…how?” KoR VO when Ben reveals his teleported lightsaber may dampen the wry comedy of that moment. (Not that it was like, “actual lol” funny, I just think the beats of the KoR’s silent reactions and his shrug were near-perfect originally.)

I think I agree here. The KoR are speechless originally, and that was funnier I think. Maybe have them just say the one “how?!” instead of two different guys talking? We can tell they’re shocked by their body language, stepping back speechless. I dunno. Not the biggest deal in the world.

Can’t help but agree; I’ll see how it sounds with just “what?” and nothing more.

And I gotta say: I am genuinely surprised by how much BETTER this newer computer performs than either of my previous two Macs. It’s only 3 years newer, but MAN. Even booting into my old hard drive to run Sierra, things are dramatically more fluid. I can actually… use FCP7 and FCPX like a human being. Like, it actually… plays things back in a way that lets me see and hear what’s happening.

It honestly makes me want to find some other fan edit project to work on now!

That’s the spirit!

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Perhaps you’d consider an edit of The Hobbit to go alongside your/Kerr’s LOTR tri–sextilogy? I got those bad boys waiting in the cue for a truly miserable day with 12 spare hours…

I’ve been thinking about taking The Hobbit, and possibly Lord of the Rings after, and restructuring it into a TV/Limited Series format that can better handle the episodic nature of the narrative.

Just bought the theatrical cuts to have some music work solved for me (goodbye Goblin King song).

That’s a clever idea!

My ideal version would be a 3 in 1, more heavy on cuts than most versions to focus on a single important event for each act - The Riddle Game, Bilbo vs Smaug, and the Arkenstone dilemma. Rivendell would be cut entirely, for example, in order to give more time to the elves which have a real effect on the plot.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I could see that, I guess there are still so much… stuff. Bilbo’s and Thorin’s relationship has got to be the core of the narrative. It would still have to be a massive movie to fit those big moments, but keep everything that gives the Arkenstone plot meaning… but if it’s possible to pull off, that would be great.

I’ve been trying to cobble gameplay footage from Squadrons to complete the deleted scene of Han as an Imperial Pilot. Not been easy.

Maybe take a stab at a two-film edition of The Hobbit, which was how the whole thing was conceived before it was changed to a trilogy at the last minute.

I think the music does blend better in this new pass.

That sounds better and more smooth. There is still a weird different swell of music that plays under the line, but I assume that’s because of the editing circumstances of that bit. As good as it’s probably going to get, so it sounds fine to me.

Hal, I think that music pass sounds good! Another thing you could do to smooth it even more might be to bring up the tie fighter sound fx. They’re flying pretty fast and close to the camera so they could boom a little?!

Author

Yeah I had to fade the initial audio out quickly without compromising the TIE sounds too much. Perhaps having some tie sounds carry over slightly to the cockpit shot may help, too.

I’ve just released a TV-to-movie edit of the Hobbit, and have started the same with LotR! I’m really proud of my Hobbit season, and I think it presents the worthy successor to LotR that it should always have been.

I use Adamdens’ three-to-two cut as the base (with plenty of my own edits on top), and found that not only does the narrative break really neatly, but the TV format gives you a couple of neat options to deal with some issues that movies just can’t solve.

Check the forum thread for details and videos, or PM for links!

That’s all right, but let’s curb Hobbit talk here. I don’t think I’d like to do a 2-film version since there’s no good footage to contrive a satisfying ending to film 1 without picking one of the first two films’ endings.

Here’s another pass at that scene. I just added some music from earlier in the scene, since sadly that sequence is not featured in the OST. It’s not a great fit, but hopefully this can smooth out the dropoff in music.

😁👌 Perfect sound through my surround system and as mentioned strenghen the tie fx during transition and its done, also agree Maple films done one Hobbit edit to rule them all so no need to go there at all.

Any tips on how to download this latest workprint? I get the download limit exceeded message. I last watched workprint 3 and am very curious to see how the latest updates have turned out.

Also, to anyone who hasn’t watched the LoTR Kerr Extended Edition edits that Hal assisted with, I highly recommend them!

Copy the workprint to your own Google Drive, and then copy it again within your Drive. That should be enough to fool it into bypassing the limits.

And thanks; I like Kerr’s LOTR edits a great deal. 😃
