Yeah, we’ve been over that, too. The ghouls line stays.

Hmmm, for the 3PO/trooper moment… I like what RogueLeader came up with. But I don’t have anything else clever in mind.

3PO: “excuse me, might you direct us to the—“

Trooper: “_____”

3PO: continues a second

Trooper: “_____”

So… do people prefer Palpatine’s message here to what’s in the workprint? We get one additional line, but lose the impact of the concluding static immediately preceding the crowd gasping and clamoring. Personally, I prefer what’s currently in the workprint. https://vimeo.com/449495094

I think the impact is even better with the crowd reacting to “The day of victory is at hand”, like they realize there’s an evil scheme that’s approaching soon, which Poe comes to explain afterwards with “He’s been planning his revenge, his followers have been building something for years…” etc.

And like I said the extra line makes it feel more like they’ve been hearing to a longer message, since “the great error is corrected” doesn’t sound like the beginning of a phrase, now it feels like we hear the final words of a longer speech. The speech ends with Palpatine promising their victory approaches = the crowd gasps.

The extra line also gives more breathing room for the audience to understand what’s going on in the scene (a large crowd hearing to a recording of Palpatine), a first time viewer will probably “get it” after the establishing shot & the first line, alongside the gasps of the crowd. Where as the current version feels a bit “blink and you’ll miss it”.

I think that if you are to overlay a Palpatine line over the characters reaction than you might as well include more of the message like in IIFaneditor’s version: https://vimeo.com/399876146
(which I’m totally a fan of!)

Interesting idea, just seems a little rough.

Yeah, it’s pretty choppy as he reduced spacing between sentences. And he used reaction shots that’ll be needed later in the scene. I’d say it’s either what’s in the workprint, which is still what seems best to me, or my recent clip that wedges in another phrase but gets rid of the nice synchronicity of Poe’s exasperation with the message’s conclusion.

I think that if you reduce the lines to “The work of generations is complete, the great error is corrected, the day of victory is at hand, the day of the Sith” you wouldn’t have to use the shot from later. Also the choppiness would be removed by the broadcast sound affect.

I think what is in the work print works best between the two options

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

I think the version in the workprint is better. It matches up with the characters’ reactions more.

Yeah I dig the workprint as it currently stands. I’d really like if “The work of generations is complete” could fit somewhere to acknowledge the previous two trilogies, but I’m fine with how the current cut conveys the emotions of the characters, giving them a few seconds to make sense of what they’ve heard.

I think the version in the workprint feels too much like –
“What’s the message?”
“It’s two lines from Palpatine.”

I just wanted to chime in to say that I think the colors in the new workprint look close to perfect. Very natural. I also like the middle ground with Exogol better than the super gray look.

But it doesn’t imply that was the whole message. Taking the dialogue in the scene as a whole, it implies that they received some kind of First Order briefing message, of which the Palpatine recording was only part of. I’d say it’s much better than the theatrical version, where the message was basically “Palpatine’s back and he’s got an army of Death Stars, so you’d better hurry!”

Yes I imagine the implication is they get some sort of intel package that includes a recording of Palpatine as proof, as well as the stuff Poe exposition dumps after, but in movie language the recording is the answer to Rey’s question. And it feels like it’s only a couple of lines.

The crowd hearing Palps in any way is definitely better than “somehow palpytone retoned” but I argue the recording goes by a bit too fast, it’s over by the time you realize what’s going on.

^LOVE this!

Edit:

Does anyone know of any high quality, movie-realistic images of Vader’s castle that can be added to Mustafar?
Please post any you might find.

But if you add another line, it’s still only three lines. Doesn’t seem like there are any viable options to fix that, and it isn’t a major problem anyway. I much prefer the reactions of the Resistance in the workprint version.

Since Hal wants to maintain the majority of the reactions to after the message cuts off, I think the solution would be to include the scene from later where they decode the message but instead of the sith language being played you have “the work of generations is complete” cutting “the great error is corrected” and going straight to "the day of victory is at hand, the day of the sith.

I think the most important thing, in this case, is to convey the most with the least amount of words possible.

Poor Hal, having to decide since it seems to be split. Although I still would rather not have any of the Fortnite dialogue at all, I can live with what’s in the work print. It’s still corny to me, but if it’s just the one short line it is acceptable and plays better with people’s reactions to the scene.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

I like it how it is in the workprint. It clearly plays like there was a longer message and we’re just hearing the tail end of it. I don’t think adding more of the message would lead to any sort of substantial improvement.

Either one is fine to me. Heck you could use voice clips of Papa Palpatine from Robot Chicken and I’d be satisfied. Anything works as long as it’s not “Somehow, Palpatine returned.” I hate that line so much 😛
