Hmm… can’t say I’m a fan of Rey killing Leia. Interesting idea but not for me

I like the cruel irony of it, but I don’t know if the rest of the film supports it. You’d have to create new dialogue between her and Luke on Ahch-To to solidify her recognition and guilt. It should be doable, and I could help create the lines of people told me what lines to use. I haven’t gone back into the films for a hot minute and would need a refresher.

Maz Kanata says: “to reach her son will take all the strength she has left”. So it’s clear Leia wasn’t coming out of it alive. Rey didn’t kill her.

She feels ashamed that in her rage she didn’t hesitate to kill Kylo, while Leia was still trying to bring back Ben. She’s reminded she tried to bring him back herself, which is why she tells him “I did want to take your hand, Ben’s hand”. Rey feels she’s lost control which is why she goes on exile.

1 know what the film intended…I thought we were talking about the fan edit.

Hey everybody just wanted to pop in and give a small take on another addition thats made its way in to the latest work print. Unfortunately I am the negative Nancy here, I was blown away at how convincing that coruscant clip was in the end, but (I dont want to step on any creative toes here)I’m afraid I dont think the Naboo Star Destroyer works at all. I think the coruscant Star Destroyer worked because it was already an asset and because it was far away and obscured enough to be believable. Unless something can be done like that, to the naboo clip, I KNOW anyone I show this too will look at that clip and cringe. Again I dont mean to step on anybody’s toes, I always appreciate the effort in these edits.

This is the way.

Snooker had just send me a revised clip that she feels blends in better to the surrounding footage. I can’t post a clip right at the moment, but it looks less flickers and quick, like there’s a larger scale to it.

I suppose the alternative would be to ditch the destroyer, and add gungans chasing a shrieking stormtrooper across the foreground.

My stance on revising fan edits.

I hate to be a pain, but I don’t think it is super convincing just yet.

I think if the ship descended much slower, and if the smoke was more transparnet to the background it would work much better. As a bonus, it would be nice to see some Naboo starfighters flying away from the destroyer, even if it is just some small ships instead of one big ship blowing up with nothing around it.

Actually, there are n1’s flying away! but i rendered them at an accurate scale so they Barely show up 😦

also yeah i’ll play around with the shot some more

I showed my brother (who works in the film industry) the Naboo shot and this is what he noticed:

  • The shot pans to the right but the Star Destroyer stays in one place which wouldn’t be the case if this was captured with a real camera. Use some motion tracking on the Destroyer to match the movement of the “camera” as that would greatly improve the shot.
  • You can tell the smoke effect is just the same element copied on top itself, smoke doesn’t travel that fast and, smoke would never be that big at that scale. Big explosions in Star Wars don’t really have smoke to begin with so if someone has a clean plate of an actual Star Wars explosion and you used that it might look better.
  • He was also put off by the lens flare because, as he said it, “There are no lens flares in Star Wars, it looks like Star Trek.” An explosion from the height of the Star Destroyer wouldn’t cause a lens flare.
  • The light flash on the palace is unnecessary because the Destroyer is behind the palace (over the city of Theed) and the flash looks like the light source is from the front.

I noticed the Star Destroyer looks unnaturally fuzzy compared to the Naboo Palace. Sharpen it a little bit but try to maintain the “in the upper atmosphere” look that you’re going for.

Keep up the good work snooker, this shot is looking better and better with every version!

I agree about the smoke needing to be slower and more of a haze. I’m also thinking that the explosions should be much smaller or possibly removed. Looks great otherwise.

Generally agree about the time lock tied in with the beacon.
However.
They have 70 bajillion souped up Star Destroyers hanging out there.
You destroy the beacon…um…they build another one. Or two. Just to be safe.
Unless they’re out of building resouces from crafting 70 bajillion souped up Star Destroyers.

That’s a plot hole written by JJ Abrams and Chris Terrio… luckily Palpatine explodes or something and all the ships blow up too? It’s kinda unclear… They do blow up a few by destroying the canons, but the majority just… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

They get stuck without the navigation signal from the capital ship.

That’s the beauty of simply removing the timer. The plot, and motivation for the resistance is to destroy the navigation stuff. That’s the main goal. Of course we can all argue “but why wouldn’t they build another navigation system or other reason.” That’s all moot since the movie/plot tells us what the heroes need to do, even if it doesn’t make sense. It’s there. Just use it.

Plus, again another major issue I have is this movie is saying all these major events occurs
In 16 hours, in which revenge of the Sith lasted the time padme was pregnant and gave birth. Let that sink in for a moment.

REMOVE THE TIMER.

Revenge of the Sith takes place over the course of about a week or so. She’s been hiding her pregnancy, and Anakin had been away from home or about six months. The twins might’ve been slightly premature, but Revenge of the Sith doesn’t stretch out for months.

She started with no baby bump at the beginning of the movie to giving birth at the end of it. What are you talking about?

Are you saying a woman only has a baby bump a few weeks before giving birth?

No, we’re saying Lucas did a shit job of plotting out the timeframe of the movie. I think we’re supposed to believe she’s already 7 or 8 months pregnant at minimum when we meet up with her and that she’s been doing a stupidly good job of hiding her belly, but that’s definitely a stretch.

But yes, ROTS does only take place over the course of a few days to a week.

She had a bump, just lots of clothing draped around her.

Ahsoka’s Walkabout arc in The Clone Wars takes place as Anakin is leaving, and prior to The Bad Batch arc.

The Bad Batch arc of The Clone Wars takes place six months before Revenge of the Sith, Padmé has a slight bump then as well (even tries to tell him then).

The Siege of Mandalore arc takes place simultaneously with Revenge of the Sith, and also doesn’t take place over the course of several months.

Before you talk about how recent this season of Clone Wars is, remember that The Bad Batch was pitched by George Lucas, who approved the original scripts and timeline before the Disney buyout of Lucasfilm (though the scene with Padmé was a later addition). Ahsoka’s Walkabout as well, and was one of the people who said Han should be replaced with Nyx, and then Lando and Nyx both were replaced by the Martez sisters more recently.

Congrats on being able to resume production! LA is still shut down if you’re not in post or animation. Be safe and have a good shoot!!

Ah I stand corrected. My goodness George needed another guy during the making of those movies. My apologies.

I still stand by my removing of the timer. Lol.

I’ll remove the ticking clock line!

Jonh, great to hear! I’m glad you’re back in business tearing up the world, and will be glad to receive your finished work whenever you have it ready.

And that’s some good feedback about the Naboo shot. I know snooker wants it to look like it was always like that, and those are some pointers I never would’ve noticed. (But your brain did?) And of course I think snooker for the effort and wizardry, too, as that is such a wonderful shot to have.

It’ll get there for sure! Snooker will get it down. Make it look like it always belonged there 😉

No excuses Jonh! Forget work, your focus should clearly be on a fan edit for a bunch of Star Wars fans. Get your priorities straight! 😉

Hmm… can’t say I’m a fan of Rey killing Leia. Interesting idea but not for me

Maz Kanata says: “to reach her son will take all the strength she has left”. So it’s clear Leia wasn’t coming out of it alive. Rey didn’t kill her.

I like the cruel irony of it, but I don’t know if the rest of the film supports it.

All of this. Rey killing Leia is a moment with no support on either side of it. In an odd way that makes it seem plausible for an Abrams movie, because the rest of TROS is also filled with cool-sounding moments that don’t have any real setup or effort put into their execution. But there’s no need to come up with another reason to make Rey feel guilty in that moment, much less having it be that reason. It makes the breeziness of Luke’s hangout with her on Ahch-To even weirder and slighter now. “Oh, you accidentally killed her? It’s alright, she was cool w/ you. Check it out, here’s her lightsaber, take it!”

But beyond all that, it just doesn’t work. The whole point of resurrecting Carrie Fisher through deleted scenes was essentially to have her make that sacrifice to save Ben during the duel. They wanted to do that, and worked backwards from what they had in order to achieve that goal. There was no way anyone involved ever thought or meant for that to be read as “so, Rey accidentally kills her.” It’s just a side-effect of bad decisionmaking and execution of their already misguided idea. I can understand why people would believe that’s what happened considering all the other misguided empty-headed decisions for the sake of “COOL” happening, that viewers might want to latch onto something that seems like it COULD be substantial, even if it was an accident. But everything else in the movie is pointing to and underlining the idea that Leia’s whole purpose in TROS is to sacrifice herself to save her son. It’s the only thing she has to do as a character. Re-editing it so she doesn’t even do that makes the whole deleted-scenes endeavor of Fisher’s “performance” even emptier than it was before.

The bigger problem is that she saves her son and then they just cover her with a sheet for the next half-hour of the movie so they can get the disappearing body effect to twin (another example of a cool idea executed poorly and with no real thought behind it). If she’s sacrificing herself there, she should disappear there. Either after Han’s memory, or just after Rey has revived him (you could, potentially through cross-cutting, make it seem like her force is flowing through Rey). But no, they just turn her into furniture for Maz to sit in front of until Reylo is consummated.

The other bad part of deciding to cover her with a sheet until after Ben disappears is now she can’t show up in the “All the Jedi” segment, which she should. If anything, she should be the primary Jedi. The movie was created with the idea of using Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia as a symbol, and then nobody involved actually did anything symbolic with her image. When she does show up as a ghost at the very end, the focus is still on Luke, visually.

If Ben had died resurrecting Rey earlier in the Palpatine fight (and disappeared without them kissing - or without Rey even knowing he’d saved her) you could have both Ben AND Leia in the Ghost lineup behind her.

It’s just a mess.
