I divide the OT further…there is the OC and the RC…the Original Continuity where Anakin and Darth are 2 separate people, and the Reboot Continuity, starting with the second movie, where they are not. I still remember the “I am your father” reveal and thinking “no, you’re not…Lucas said otherwise.” So speaking just of the OC, I always thought Owen Lars as Luke’s mother’s brother…last name not Skywalker, so not Luke’s father’s brother, meaning Luke’s mother was a Lars. Could Beru be Luke’s kin, not Ownen? Upon reflection, yes, of course. Are there any clues at all as to which? In the novelization or maybe even in the Marvel comic books? Needless to say, I was never that much interested in the RC, at least compared to the OC. Making changes like that mid-stream is pretty poor story-telling.

Wow, I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard someone call the iconic ESB reveal “poor storytelling”.

There are some serious purists on here.

I know it has probably already been said a million times but before Attack of the Clones Owen Lars was actually the brother of Obi Wan Kenobi. That was what was in the novelization for Return of the Jedi. And was Lucas original relationship for the characters when he was making Return of the Jedi.

Like Leia’s mom living long enough for her to remember her. The original concept was different that what ended up in the prequels.

I prefer Star Wars in its truest form, the storyboards. Once they started filming, everything just changed.

As a kid I always thought Owen was intended to be Ben’s brother and it’s teased in several books or other works too.

I still don’t understand why the writer for the ROTJ novelization decided making Owen Obi-Wan’s brother was a good idea. Luke calls Owen “uncle”, so unless Obi-Wan was intended to be Luke’s other uncle (which isn’t likely), it doesn’t really make sense.

I would have preferred Owen to be Anakin’s literal brother, but the canonical explanation of him being Anakin’s step-brother is fine too.

I can’t remember how the idea first got in my head but it may have been the ROTJ novelization.
When young Obi-Wan is getting trying to resist the memory wipe in The Hidden Past he tries to hold onto specific memories one of which is his brother’s name being Owen.
