I hope the panel went well!

It did go well! I’m guessing there were around 400 people in the room. And I’m hoping video of it will surface at some point.

I had to respond to this earlier post, because…

Again, how do they get away with selling this? And what’s next, a live show in theaters?

Funny you should say that!

What is considered the better release in terms of image quality - the Editidroid, or the Zion Hybrid which is sourced from the Editdroid? The Zion Hybrid says:

Sourced from the EditDroid DVD

  • Video enhanced with noise reduction and color correction
  • Remastered Boba Fett cartoon by g-force edited into the program (sourced
    from the Star Wars Blu-ray)

Well, I obviously have a personal bias. But if you watch the two side by side, there’s a significant difference between the EditDroid and mine in terms of video noise and color. I used a very good noise reduction plug-in for After Effects called Neat Video that significantly reduced the video noise while preserving both sharpness and detail. I can’t remember if I ever posted any side by side screenshots back when I was working on the project, but if I did they’d be in my SWHS thread.

Well, the Emerald City Comic Con us over. When I was exploring the show floor I was surprised a) to find three booths selling obviously illegal DVDs (expected only one or two) and b) find the SWHS at only one of them. I had also expected bootleg Blu-rays but only saw legitimate ones and those at only one of the three.

The SWHS was packaged badly in a thin case. Needless to say I left it there.

This request is a bit of a reach.

I’ve got a LOW resolution copy of The Colbert Report from January 10th 2012?

It’s the one where he discusses the Star Wars Holiday Special and, well, I’d just love to have it even in 480p. The copy that I’ve got is THAT bad.

Thanks,

Seems to be from the same photoshoot as:

Fisher’s look in the first one speaks volumes.

Thank you, none!

It’s good to see that clip of Colbert and I’m amazed that before it was posted today I couldn’t find anything Colbert-related on Usenet.

It won’t look great blown up all the way to 1080p, but on the other hand better to have it than not!

Need a bit of help.

I’m trying to collect a few more video interview clips if I can find them.

There are lots related to Star Wars – but few about the SWHS.

Here’s what I have:

Bea Arthur on Archive of American TV

Anthony Daniels on Captain Cosmic

Anthony Daniels on Digital Spy

Carrie Fisher from Dragon*Con

Carrie Fisher from Celebration VI

Carrie Fisher from Time’s 10 Questions

Mark Hamill at FanExpo in Dallas

Harrison Ford on Conan O’Brien

Harrison Ford on Digital Spy

Peter Mayhew MURKY convention Q&A

Bruce Vilanch on Archive of American TV

Anyone have a treasured bit that I’ve missed? Thanks

Have you downloaded the HD version? Conan’s official Youtube channel uploaded it this spring.

So I started a new project to compare a couple different SWHS releases, then…this happened.

SWHS Mega Compare

This is a Premiere Pro project with 12 separate Holiday Special releases at full 480 res lined up on one 2560x1440 video sequence.

A few things I noticed:

  • We’ve come a long way since the days of the initial DVD releases
  • Color varies quite a bit with every source
  • You can tell how clean the EditDroid source is compared to all the VHS transfers
  • What the hell was I thinking with the aspect ratio on my v1 release, lol
  • RiffTrax definitely sourced the video on their site from my v1, only they cropped it, did a ton of smoothing and noise reduction, and for some reason converted the whole thing to 23.976 fps (I’m honored, though I wish they’d used my v2 release instead)
  • I really like the news segment and Wonder Woman/Hulk bumper intro used on the Tasjo and Gormaanda releases, and how Rikter put the SW and ESB trailers at the end of his KCMO release
  • “Fighting the Frizzies at 11” is still the best commercial break segment and should be added to commercial breaks in future releases

My Projects:
[Holiday Special Hybrid DVD v2]
[X0 Project]
[Backstroke of the West DVD]
[ROTS Theatrical DVD]

So much this. The references to other shows, the graphics, the music on the various intro bits, it all puts you right back where you were when you were dead certain this was going to be the best thing you’d ever seen on TV.

Sighted over on a torrent site called M_S_l_e_ (and it’s taking genuine effort to avoid correcting the typo in the fifth line):

The Star Wars Holiday Special Bonus Disc 2.1

The first version of this disc was a single-layer DVD in 2012. Thw update is
a dual-layer Blu-ray just to be able to fit in all the material.

Version 2.0 had such a limited release that it almost doesn’t count. There was
just enough space to add one more item without removing anything which brings
us to 2.1.

The disc was created with Nero Video. Everything has been upconverted to HD –
even if it was standard definition or below – because I found two instances
where YouTube-sourced videos would lock up my LG player when encoded at their
original resolution. (Thanks, Nero.)

Material new to this disc is marked with an asterisk (*) and reprise material
with a dash (-).

ANIMATION

  • EditDroid transfer
  • HD version from 2011
  • Animatic reel
  • Interview with Boba Fett animator John Celestri
  • Boba Fett animation roughs
  • “Bucket Head” from 2002

  • Christmas 2008 and 2009 (animated from Star Wars Galaxies)
  • “Christmas Tauntauns”
  • Saturday Night Live
  • Spike TV commercial
  • Weird Al’s “White and Nerdy”

FINAL THOUGHTS

The scans of “The Kashyyyk Depths” were done by an anonymous person years ago.
For those intrigued by the story, IDW has published a three-volume set
compiling the entire five-year newspaper strip as part of The Library of
American Comics. HIGHLY recommended, and these nine pages appear in volume one
in much better quality.

Blue Milk Special has published parody strips for the entire original trilogy,
Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, Shadows of the Empire, The Star Wars Holiday
Special, and are currently working through Heir to the Empire. Reproduced here
is just the first of forty SWHS strips, and they skewer every aspect of the
Special. Hilarious and also highly recommended.

Matt Busch’s painting “Encounter on Panna Prime” (background for the animation
screen) still had a few copies left in his online store when last checked.
It’s even more gorgeous in real life.

Doing some reverse image searching, some of those Getty photos are available in this gallery on Der Spiegel - click the “20 Bilder” button to see them all. They’re not the full resolution/quality from Getty but it’s a decent improvement from anywhere else I’ve been searching.
