The original Planet of the Apes would’ve made a decent Twilight Zone episode, being co-written by Rod Serling and all. Hardly a great movie, though, and certainly nothing worthy of four sequels, a TV series, two reboots, etc.

Definitely feels like an older franchise, if the cheesy title didn’t already give it away, I don’t think it would have survived the way it has if it was up against the blockbusters of today.

Oh, wow.
Having only seen the original Planet of the Apes film and none of the ones that came after that… I had no idea until today that the series was rebooted TWICE! I always assumed that the 2001 film and the new films were of the same series!

The two sequels to the Franco reboot are both significantly better than Rise and much different in tone, and I say that as someone who thought Rise was surprisingly good. That trilogy was way better than it had any right to be.

As a kid I would sometimes catch the Simpsons on TV. I didn’t love it, but it was perfectly serviceable. Then I kept hearing online when I got older that people thought it was bad now and was better in the earlier scenes. One day I watched the very first episode in order to test that. The one where they find the dog on Christmas or something. The quality was exactly the same. Only the animation had changed. If it were written today, I wouldn’t have noticed the difference.

Conclusion: The Simpsons hasn’t gotten any worse since it started.

Granted, in retrospect, the sample size is to small to provide an accurate judgement, but like I said, I don’t care for sitcoms, so I can’t be bothered sitting through more of it. It was mildly amusing then and is mildly amusing now.

I’m trying really hard to honour the rules of this thread, but this is pushing my buttons something fierce. . . .

I mean, I’ve seen Simpsons episodes from the late-2000s that were funny, but I have to agree with DE’s buttons.

EDIT: The only specific episode that comes to mind is “24 Minutes”.

Do the rules count if the opiner hasn’t seen the thing they are opining?

Well… I would say that it isn’t fair to post an unpopular opinion about something without having seen it, so… I guess that gives you clearance to set them straight! 😕

If it makes you feel any better, I don’t mind you guys sharing your thoughts on it. I think the rule is more about avoiding heated debates. If you guys just wanna get it off your chest so we can move on, I think that’d be okay.

This feels appropriate. Haha

This is also a classic moment.

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

Toy Story 4 is a corporate cash grab. The third film wrapped everything up nicely.

Yeah, and Doctor Who was ruined when it shifted focus from a lovely policeman to this time travel rubbish.

Oh boy time for my Doctor Who opinion! The ratio of good to bad episodes for me is majority bad by a wide margin, unless you are a child I don’t think for any reasons outside of previous nostalgia or cultural connection is the show worth it. 2 good episodes out of every 50 is a waste of time.

I’m turned off by TV shows shot on video in general. It’s just an ugly, ugly aesthetic. My imperative to watch Doctor Who would be greater if they had made greater use of film.

Also, since Doctor Who reminded me. . . .

Most TV series shouldn’t run past five seasons. Five seasons should be sufficient to tell any stories worth telling, and that goes triple for shows with 20+ episodes per season. Series with 6-10 seasons are bloated; series with 11+ seasons are zombified.

But the best Doctor Who ever got was Tom Baker, and he started in like, season 12 I think. Agree about shot on video, but I can forgive it if the show is good. A great example is Barney Miller.

Then boy will you like Spearhead from Space, the one story to have been shot entirely on film do to union disputes. This makes it the only pre-2009 story that could be entirely remastered in HD without upscaling.

In all seriousness, though, Spearhead from Space is an excellent place to start.

FWIW, Google tells me the show nowadays is processed to look more filmic. I know the Chibnall Era is often cited as being cinematic, but the writing is unanimously panned for most of it so who cares.

This is musical rather than film/TV oriented. And it may not even be that unpopular. Regardless…

The instrumentation of Collins-era Genesis is better than the instrumentation of Gabriel-era Genesis. Not the quality of the singing, nor the songwriting, just the instrumentation. Gabriel-era Genesis just doesn’t have that haunting synth sound I love.
