Small details that took you FOREVER to notice in the Star Wars films — Page 15

I recall noticing the rancor’s earring in a photo in some reference book.

While they just used the same graphichs as in the plans, I doubt that in the film they are “the plans” and more likely it’s just a general station computer where you can find info like the general alert about the rebels what 3PO mentioned later. It seems there are some menus on the sides so it’s like a main menu. Cool find though, haven’t noticed it before.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

^ Isn’t there a similar graphic to that in Rogue One when Jyn Erso is transmitting the plans from the tower on Scarif ?

Shows up a little later in the movie, but here it is. I really appreciate the consistency between the computer readouts in Rogue One and ANH. Honestly I think this gets overlooked quite a lot.

I loved seeing that in the theater. I called out, “It looks like shit!” 😀

Thing that only just now occurred to me:

Why would anyone on the Millennium Falcon be surprised that the Death Star wasn’t a moon? Moons orbit planets. There are no planets around. Alderaan never even had a moon to begin with.

It’s never said in the movie whether Alderaan had a moon or not. By the time they pursue the TIE fighter they are out of the debris field and potentially near the orbit of another planet. It’s possible that Han and Chewie have never been to the system before, (Luke certainly hasn’t) and we don’t know if Obi Wan ever visited there either.

If there was another planet it was possibly orbiting, that planet still would have been clearly visible by that point. You’d have seen the planet before you ever saw the “small moon”

And Han would have known if there was a moon or not because he looked at the charts before he jumped there. Plus any moon that WAS orbiting would have been destroyed when the planet blew up.

It just seemed funny to me that today was the first time I ever thought “hey, wait, of course it’s not a moon, there’s literally NOTHING FOR IT TO ORBIT out there.”

A rogue moon that’s not orbiting anything is also a possibility. The main thing is nobody can imagine there’s a space station that big in existence, (except for Kenobi) therefore it’s gotta’ be a moon.

Over in the Star Trek 'verse, Vulcan has no moon.

Now I understand why JJ Abrams turned Vulcan into Alderaan in nuTrek.

Someone forgot to tell Robert Wise that. 😉

I’d expect planets with satellites that big in the sky to have serious tidal issues.

Probably why they lost the moons for the Director’s Edition.

Supposedly Douglas Trumbull didn’t think the original test matte (with orange sky) looked alien enough, so he designed that larger and more complex matte with the moons/planets in the night sky. Not sure why they thought it was a good idea to change it to night though, as Spock is clearly shielding his eyes from the sun when he stands up.

That said, a planet-sized moon also appears in the Vulcan sky in the animated series, so The Motion Picture wasn’t the first thing to make that creative choice.

THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.

Here’s the early Vulcan orange-sky design - still with at least one giant moon:

Kind of the reverse of what happened on Forbidden Planet. I recall a Cinefantastique article saying the FP script called for a chartreuse sky, which was faithfully depicted in the cyclorama on set. But there were also B&W storyboards of the surface of Altair IV, which called for a “blue-black sky” with “large planets” against a starry backdrop.

If I remember rightly there was a line in the novelisation about it. When Luke says “heading for that small moon” Han says (something like) “strange, I wasn’t aware Alderaan had any moons”…

I wonder how the radio drama handled that scene?

Maybe I’m the only one, but I’ve always assumed the thing Luke throws to kill the Rancor was a rock. It’s actually a skull.
