The best Bond films are the ones that look at Fleming’s books and say: “Nah, mate.” Die Another Day excluded, diverting from Fleming produces the best stuff, IMO. The Moore era, GE-TWINE, and even big chunks of Goldfinger are the best that the series has to offer, IMO.

The last two Bond movies I truly liked were TWINE and Spectre. The sooner the series deviates from Fleming, the better.

I often hear the popular opinion that only the even numbered Star Trek films of the original movies are the good ones . I disagree…I just watched Star Trek The Motion Picture (1979)again last night and I think it is highly underrated . I think it is like 2001 A Space Odyssey on steroids ! It’s trippy as hell and has a poignant story . Some complain about the pacing being too slow ,and I used to be in that camp , but watching it again , I remembered that it had been 10 years since the original tv series ended .This is the audiences re introduction into that world and they are meant to experience the same sense of wonder and awe as the characters in the movie themselves experience .Plus , I genuinely appreciate spending time in thought provoking slow burners such as Bladerunner and Watchmen etc .I know George Lucas has been quoted as saying that the problem with some film makers is that they spend too much time on sets and settings and not enough on story , but the best of them make the settings and the worlds part of the story , almost characters themselves.

The Motion Picture and The Search for Spock are both underrated. And both are better than any of the TNG movies.

I would even say The Final Frontier is underrated, though for good reason, and it’s definitely beneath the other five movies.

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Rise of Skywalker is a better film than Endgame. Endgame’s use of time travel was a lazy cop-out, while Stark’s plan would cause worse economic devastation than the Snap did. TROS on the other hand felt like a natural conclusion to the Skywalker saga despite it’s problems.

Caveat: Special Longer Edition of The Motion Picture. It’s got more character scenes.

I’d argue that The Final Frontier is a tad underappreciated and that’s it’s probably the best of the “bad” Trek films. The TNG films bar First Contact really blow, while I’m not keen on the Kelvin movies. At least The Final Frontier can be used as an argument for auteur theory, what with Shatner presenting “his” vision of the series and his understanding of the characters.

I wish there were no Star Wars films made after Return of the Jedi.
The episode numbers would remain a cool artistic choice. The series itself a classic, untouched product of it’s time.
The EU would only have to take the Trilogy as canon, & several continuities could co-exist, being unrestrained by any of George’s plans for further entries.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is better than all the F13 sequels which followed. It’s a moronic movie, certainly, but at least its stupidity is simpatico with the stupidity of the previous entries. Zombie Jason lowered the series to a new level of mindlessness, and it kept descending from there.

Bringing Palpatine back was necessary for the Skywalker Saga to properly conclude.

Noooooooooo.

I don’t get Evangelion. I (reluctantly, with great difficulty towards the end - never forcing myself through something that way again) watched all 26 episodes and the movie and it just doesn’t click with me. At least the opening’s kickass.

I find the majority of films in the MCU to be overrated. They are released far too quickly and focus way too much on CGI action that ends up looking fake. Nothing can replace practical effects for me.

I too simply don’t see the appeal of Marvel films. I like Guardians though.

Feature-length hardcore porn is pointless. Nobody watches this stuff for the plot.

What if it’s feature-length without a plot?

Wait that actually exists? Why?!

THANK YOU!!! Finally someone sees eye to eye with me on the matter. Palpatine is key to all of this. He was the mastermind behind the first 6, so continuing without him would be extremely anti-climactic. I’m glad I didn’t have to edit in a line about Snoke being Palpatine’s rotting corpse or something. Abrams and Terrio saved me the trouble.

The 1995 movie Heat, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, is perhaps one of the most overrated movies of all time.

I remember watching it based on the overwhelmingly positive word of mouth I got from people, and honestly, apart from the conversation between Pacino and De Niro at the café, and climactic bank heist near the end, I found Heat to be a pretty forgettable movie.

I found Goodfellas to be interminably dull and it just refused to end. I was also convinced I was watching Alden Ehrenreich in the lead role until I checked IMDb afterwards.

I watch Caligula for the plot. Although that’s half a hardcore porno, half a real film, so I don’t know if that counts.

Here’s a few I have.

-Temple of Doom is the best of the Indy franchise
-Return of the Jedi is superior to A New Hope
-Eyes Wide Shut is a brilliant film and should be classified as a masterpiece along with the rest of Kubrick’s
filmography
-Death Proof is Tarantino’s highly underrated film of his filmography and deserves much more respect than it gets
-David Lynch’s Dune and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me are unfairly dunked upon (on FWWM, I don’t know how much public
opinion has changed over the years, but it was hated upon release and I consider it to be excellent)
-Harry Potter is an overrated franchise. Not bad, but people considering them to be up there with Star Wars and LotR is
a little silly
-Ju-On (The Grudge) is a top-shelf horror franchise (at least for the first 4 Japanese and first 2 American installments)
-Tim Burton films generally stink. His best work are typically ones where his identity shows the least like Ed Wood,
Batman '89 (not Returns) and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

In response to the previous post, I think Batman Returns is a masterpiece whereas '89 is forgettable and took away everything that made the Joker interesting.

As for Harry Potter, I think my opinion is actually quite unpopular in that I think the films got much worse as they went along. Columbus’s films were fantastic, Cuaron and Newell’s work was pretty good (although I do take issue with some changes Cuaron brought to the table and Yates took to the extreme), and the Yates films are a fucking embarrassment. Seriously, you can’t see shit, and the plots are sleep-inducing relative to what came before. Having not read the books, I don’t how much of that was down to Rowling and how much to Kloves and Goldenberg, but it lacked all the mystery and fantasy of earlier entries, settling for being just another YA trilogy, right down to splitting the last book in half.

Oh and the composers only accentuate this gradual downward spiral. We go from the living legend John Williams to bottom of the barrel composer Alexandre Desplat, with appropriately decent composers in between.

Yeah, you aren’t the first to tell me I’m wrong about those Batman films. To each their own, 'suppose.

And, is the general consensus that the Harry Potter films get better as they go along? I feel like the series peaked with Year 3 and was quite hit or miss after that point.

I think the first two were fairly decent kids movies, 3 was the one that was actually a very, very good film and the rest sort of meld together in my mind as either mostly forgettable or not very good at all. A huge problem I have is that the first 6 film are all primarily set in the same location of Hogwarts and that makes it very difficult to even remember which movies are which.
