This Twitter trailer for the May 4, 2020 Star Wars marathon on Disney+ features the film titles scrolling backwards in a crawl, much like how the title of SW 1977 was at the top of the crawl in the storyboards & early test footage.

And then afterward the text turns from yellow to white. Again much like early test footage of the SW 1977 crawl, which had white text.

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Backwards? I’m assuming you meant the warping of the text (or “angle”, not quite sure how to describe it) being similar to the test footage?

And while on the subject of the Disney+ Saga trailers;

I just meant it was receding into the background at an angle, the way the text crawl does. Nothing to do with the particular degree of inclination. (Though I really should look at the test footage again.)

There does appear to be one notable omission from the list of Star Wars Trailers. There is another 1977 Theatrical Trailer that seems to have been forgotten about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g3_CFmnU7k

The only downside is that I cannot find a really decent quality version of it.
There is a HD German version though:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoaIHn0CNb8

Does anyone know if there currently exists a HD version of the US version?

Thanks.

I haven’t found it in HD, no, but your version is still better than the one I posted earlier in the thread; https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Original-Trilogy-TrailersPromos-Video-Thread-YouTubeVimeo-etc-finds/id/73360/page/2#1335360

I checked them side-by-side and the only difference is that this version don’t have the Academy Awards brag at the very end. So this is either a slightly different version of the 1978 re-release trailer, or they simply added the award bit at the end of a re-used 1977 trailer. Do you have any more info about it than what it says on the YT title (they’re usually not that reliable)? I would like to add it to the index, or as a backup t the previous post, but I’m not quite sure when this trailer is actually from.

BTW, the German version seem like a HD recreation using footage from the blu-ray (and perhaps also some despecialized?).

Just re-watched the German trailer and I think you are right it being a recreation, the Blue and Red lightsabers give it away - the US version has the “White Sticks” from the teaser.

I am unsure however if it is the 1978 re-release or a 2nd 1977 theatrical trailer, even though the youtube user claimed it was the 1977 trailer???

There is another OT trailer of the UK Double-Bill of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back from 1982. Can’t see it anywhere - it may have only been a TV spot rather than a full theatrical trailer, but it definitely exits. This also gets me thinking if there was also a trailer (or TV spot) for the triple bill from 1983 (or was it 1984)?

I’d love to see that if such a thing exists - that double bill was the experience that got the whole thing started for me. (By the way, the Revenge of the Jedi trailer that showed exclusively in those screenings was posted earlier in this thread).

Sky Movies did a couple of lovely animated idents for their Star Wars Channel:

Revenge Of The Jedi - 1982 UK Teaser Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAW1E3JIQZE - from the official Oscars YouTube channel (35 sec long)

The blurb:
“The Academy Film Archive holds several trailers from the United States with the initial ‘Revenge’ title, most of which announcing a May 25th 1983 release date which coincided with the anniversary of the original Star Wars stateside release in 1977. However, this peculiar and very brief Revenge of the Jedi teaser trailer originated from a cinema in the United Kingdom, where the film was originally being considered for a Christmas 1983 release. This rare teaser, preserved by the Academy Film Archive, was apparently shown with the U.K.’s May 1982 double feature re-release of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. American audiences would not get a glimpse of the third film until Star Wars was re-released in the U.S. in August 1982, meaning that this may be the earliest Revenge trailer distributed – and fans from across the pond got the first peek!”

I had no idea that this trailer, which I posted earlier this year, had a lost and found story behind it.

I’ve added the following video as a bonus to the original post.

The Lost & Found “Revenge” of the Jedi Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wIFQQYAKK4 - from the That Junkman YouTube channel (6 mins long)

"In 1982 a teaser trailer for Star Wars Revenge of the Jedi come to the UK and was lost and forgotten about until 2016!

ON-TV Star Wars Pay-Per-View special event promo (September 25th 1982)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo8WK8N7EmM - from the IntermissionSociety YouTube channel (50 sec long).

The blurb:
“From September 1982. Promo for the “one time only” special event pay-per-view broadcast of the original Star Wars on pay TV subscription service.”

ON-TV Star Wars Up Next & Star Trek II Premiere promos (1983)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Jtuh8Sz9JY - from the IntermissionSociety YouTube channel (1:09 mins long).

The blurb:
“Pair of promos for Star Wars and the future broadcast premiere of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan on Pay TV subscription service.”

screams in the void said (from the Betamax thread):

" VCRs did existed as far back as 1975 - and many people did ‘record’ the showings of Star Wars on TV onto a blank tape when the film was eventually aired on tv back in 1982 in the US (via PPV; something which only half a million people could access at the time)."

I was one of the lucky ones who got to see it on ppv ( pay per view ). My folks had a subscription to the on-tv ppv service out of Chicago. The box was in their bedroom, so I could only watch it in there, though my older brothers and I could see the scrambled signal on the downstairs TV, which we got great amusement from watching late at night 😃 Sadly we did not have a VCR at that time, as they were indeed very expensive. Here is an ad for the ON-TV Star Wars premiere that someone recorded back in the day and uploaded to YouTube, also featuring The Wrath Of Khan premiere, which is how I first saw that movie. The video says 1983, but it was in fact 1982 when Star Wars premiered on ON-TV

^ Thank you for updating this thread and the Betamax thread so the thumbnail shows ,I wasn’t sure how to gt it to show up .

No problem, though I didn’t really update your post much, I just added the ON-TV logo from wikipedia (the YouTube thumbnail was a bit odd looking). But I did add another video showing the ON-TV premiere of ANH in 1982 which I found from the same uploader.

BTW, it can be a tad convoluted, but I explained how you can post the YouTube thumbnails here.

I’m supriced no one has linked this one yet, this is one of my favorite original trilogy trailers.

This is the trailer for the 1985 re-release of Return of the Jedi.

I can’t find it at the moment but I know there’s a version of this same trailer but with a different narrator. I think it may have been on the Laserdisc.

This was a workprint trailer, with temporary (placeholder) announcer before final v/o was recorded.

Hi, I have the original film reel of this trailer from 1976 - I’m in the UK but seems to be a US version. I’m working with someone with expertise in this area to inspect it and see if it can be played again (in a Cinema).
