So I watched TROS again a couple of days ago and took some notes as to potential edits:

  • Since Kylo is oddly communing with Vader’s mask after Palps tells him he’s been ‘every voice in his head’, it might work to place this scene right after the opening crawl. The mask could be Vader telling him exactly where to find the wayfinder on Mustafar. Cut to him slaughtering the Cultists.

I tried something like that here: https://vimeo.com/417019357

I’m thinking of using the pan to Coruscant - 1313 footage - DOTF concept art and the bridge shot of Kylo Ren as Palpatine’s message plays across the galaxy, then cutting to him meditating on the helmet - setting up his search for Exogol.

I really like what you have done here, its amazing. Would it be possible using some fan film footage and some of your wizardry to have an interaction with Vader’s mask be the impetus for Kylo’s turn in episode 8?

I really hated the luke tries to kill his Nephew angle, and felt it would be more fitting that Ben finds Vader’s mask at Luke’s temple (not knowing Vader was his Grandfather a la the Bloodline novel)

I feel like your skills would be well suited to something like that, just awesome work.

That’s what I was thinking as well. My concept went something like this:

  • Pan down to Coruscant, cut to Snooker’s establishing shot
  • Kylo talks through Palpatine through the helmet, who says “My boy, come to me on Exegol”
  • Kylo gets his helmet repaired
  • Cut to Mustafar establishing shot, continue as normal

Just trying to add a bit of meat to Kylo’s search for Palpatine.

  • As a benefit to moving Kylo’s mask communing scene, Rey’s training montage could be uninterrupted by Kylo. Just show her vision, preferably cut like Dom’s proof of concept. Also, have Rey merely say ‘I’m starting to think it’s impossible’ and cut the ‘contact the spirits of the Jedi’ since that is implied.

Good idea, though I would remove the flashy visions altogether. They just cause unnecessary confusion.

  • Cut line from Leia saying she always knew Palps was out there, especially in a Rey Nobody edit.

That’s not how I interpreted the line, I just thought of it as “Wow, Palpatine must have been the real villain all along.” I would like to cut it though.

  • Obviously, Chewie’s survival reveal should be delayed or cut. I would argue for it being cut entirely since the music in that scene doesn’t work anyway.

I agree, but I don’t see what’s wrong with the music there.

I stopped taking notes after this point because I became violently bored and started flipping the bird at everything that was happening. I don’t think I’ll be watching this movie again in its entirety, since now even the humorously terrible things are no longer humorous to me.

I can’t imagine having such a violent reaction to what’s basically the cinematic equivalent of a ride at Coney Island, but you do you I guess.

Wow that is very kind of you, I really appreciate it.
I definitely agree with you on emphasising the role that Vader’s helmet/palpatine played in Kylo’s turn. It’s an idea worth pursuing.

Lol by no means am I a wizard, in fact I only started editing February of this year. I invite everyone to give it a shot, all of my editing is done on Davinci Resolve 16, it’s free and easy to use, with a few tutorials on youtube anyone can jump right in!

Reading through this thread and looking over the results of the TROS poll got me thinking about the idea of having Rey be responsible for her parents death. I know that keeping Rey as Palps granddaughter is a less popular option than Rey Nobody, but if an editor were to have Rey kill her parents I think the Rey Palpatine angle works.

This way we keep Rey’s parents as good people who were doing all they could to protect their daughter, and in a fit of uncontrolled childhood rage, she causes their death. When she accepts the truth of this it would serve to compound the feelings of inner conflict and fear she has regarding her own power

That’s well edited! But in terms of plot consistency, if the parents sold Rey to Palpatine, why/how did she remain on Jakku?

Author

Yeah, I think they need to have just sold her, Palpatine shouldn’t be involved in that at all. Makes more sense imo.

She ended up where they sold her on Jakku because Ochi never showed to retrieve her (snake problem).

EDIT: but it might be too convoluted so I might nix it…

I just had an idea for a somewhat-major change that could be made to the ending.

One thing that bugs me about this movie’s finale is that the two battles happening (the one in the sky, and the one with Palpatine) don’t really line up in terms of tension. When Palpatine drains Ben and Rey, it seems like our heroes are at their lowest point, and this is reinforced by the cut back to Poe seeing his friend Wexley die. Then Lando & co. arrive, and the music switches to the main Star Wars theme, to indicate that we’re back on the light side of things, but then we cut back to Palpatine, who “kills” Ben and electrocutes the entire fleet, leaving Rey, seemingly alone, to hear the voices of Jedi past and gain the strength to face Palpatine.

Basically, the movie tries to give us two cathartic, portals-esque moments, the first of which is kind of invalidated by the second. The way I see it, the night should be darkest just before the dawn.
So what if the not-navy arrived AFTER Palpatine started zapping?

Picture this: Palpatine drains Rey and Ben. Above, Wexley dies. How can this get any worse? Palpatine “kills” Ben and starts electrocuting the rest of the rebels. Rey sees this from below and sheds a single tear. Poe delivers his line about how he “thought we had a shot,” just as the Tantive IV, the very ship that appeared in the opening shot of SW77 as a symbol of the underdog rebellion, is destroyed. So is it the end? **** no, because that’s when Rey starts hearing the voices of all the Jedi that came before her. When she stands up and ignites her lightsaber, prompting Palpatine to stop zapping, a random voice over Poe’s radio says something along the lines of “The sky is clear, now is the time!” That’s when Poe looks up to see Lando, along with thousands of resistance sympathizers, having come to the help. Things proceed as normal from there, possibly with the addition of Jonh’s ghosts.

Most of this would just require color correction, as well as one or two additional lines of dialogue. The only trouble I’m running into is that a lot of the shots of ships falling include ships that came with Lando, so I would have to either remove those shots or find a way to remove those ships in particular from them.

Whaddya think?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

jonh, I’ve been working on incorporating your material into my edit and I just have to say great choices on the music change when Rey gets the saber and the ghosts appear. It works so well what you did. And the little trim you made when Palpatine is on the throne and puts his hands down. Great overall restructuring of the footage, even without the addition of the ghosts!!!

EDIT: Where did you get your thunder sound effect?

I like this idea, reminds me of how many edits of The Phantom Menace have restructured the third act in that film to ramp up the tension.

I think this is a good idea if it can be done seamlessly. It’s unfortunate that we have so little footage to work with for the ship/horse battles, though.

I’ve seen people defend both, actually, but all of it that I’ve seen has been coming from a place of defensiveness. It’s all subjective of course and it doesn’t really have anything to do with fanediting so let’s try and circle back around to that 😉

jonh I have been completely remixing the audio of this scene. When editors see the audio mix is in stereo they’ll realize they HAVE to remix if they want 5.1. Will use your choice of “The Return Home” string music from A New Hope. Will get some better FX for thunder then from zapsplat.com. Cutting Palpatine’s line about a scavenger girl and cutting Rey’s line “I’m all the Jedi.” Will probably keep Palpatine’s line “Let your death be the final word in the story of Rebellion.” Cutting Palpatine’s dramatic pause before using lightning on Rey (he did the same exact pause when he used lightning on the fleet).
