I’d be open to that.

So, inspired by the Palpatine-less edit that is in the works, I was thinking about removing the other the thing in the ST that really bothers me. The destruction of the New Republic.

My thought is that starting with something like TFA:Restructured, we have SKB get destroyed before it can fire at all.

The TLJ crawl and film would be reformatted to remove references to the destruction of the republic, and when the call for help is sent out and we’re told there is no response, the viewer would assume that the Republic is still just being stubborn like in TFA.

Then when we get to RoS, we add some voice over to the arriving fleets saying the Republic has sent help. Maybe even alter the crawl to say that the Republic is openly sponsoring the Resistance now.

Edit: Also, are there any good finished edits of TLJ that remove Canto Bight?

You know what would make these films feel less OT derivative? Replacing much of OT music with PT music! It would make the Saga feel more unified. Maybe Palpatine’s Sith choir can recite a portion of Duel of the Fates. There could be a hint of Battle of the Heroes in the Death Star since they sorta mirror each other in a fire and water kinda way. Across the Stars could play when Ben and Rey kiss. Kamino’s theme as the camera passes the jar of Snokes (btw, why is that theme there when Palpatine sucks Ben and Rey’s lifeforce?). Of course these only apply to TRoS, but I’m sure there’s some you could use for the other two films. Oh, I know! I’m So Sorry could play as Rey refuses to take Kylo’s hand in TLJ. In fact, I think I’ll got put that together right now, see how it looks.

I know for a fact that last idea was mocked up by someone earlier, can’t remember who though. It did work wonderfully.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

This one uses the music from Anakin and Padmé talking on Mustafar. But I totally remember seeing a mock-up with I’m So Sorry, I remember the music that swells up when it cuts to Mustafar lining up well when it cuts away from Ben and Rey to the Resistance ships blowing up.

Yeah I know, that’s what I’m saying. There was another version that I recall someone making before, like Nev said.

I mean, they use OT themes because they’re relevant to the characters. There isn’t a whole lot of relevance to using PT music, especially not if it’s going to replace original ST music.

Well, this next thing is going to look like S*** by comparison, but I made a proof-of-concept for one of my first ideas on this site: instead of removing Rey Palpatine from tRoS, adding it to tLJ.

VERY rough cut, though. I used a lot of dialogue from the audiobook.

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

Okay so I think we all agree introducing Palpatine at the start of TRoS was a mistake. But what are the alternatives?

  1. Introduce Palpatine at the end of TLJ.

  2. Introduce Palpatine at the end of TRoS.

  3. No Palpatine at all (good luck).

Most of these options have been explored, but I haven’t heard anyone consider moving his reveal to the end of the film. Cut all of Kylo’s scenes at the start, and change the Resistance dialog to refer to Palpatine as dead when they talk of his fleet. Then Rey shows up on Exegol and guess who she finds?

That might work. I recently watched an edit that moves Palpatine’s reveal to the end of act 1, and while the cutaway kind of helps the “Scavenger Hunt” plot feel less hectic, it makes seeing Palpatine less shocking because you’ve had more time to settle into the rest of the story.
I’ve experimented with putting Palpatine’s message into the Last Jedi while saving his visual reveal for tRoS, but the only spot I can find is after the credits. I would hate for tLJ to spend 80% of its runtime being so bleak, and just when you think it’s going to end on a positive note, it turns out the big bad has returned from the dead with a promise of revenge. That feels cruel.

I delayed Palpatine until about 35-40 minutes into TROS: Resurgence. It works best at the end of Act 1. I set it up so after Ren lets Rey escape from Pasaana, Palpatine threatens to turn the fleet against Ren, and then Ren reacts by going to Exegol to kill/threaten Palpatine.

heil Palpatine!

You have a point about ending on a hopeful note, and while that wouldn’t work with Palpatine’s message, it would absolutely work with Kylo’s trip to Exegol. It’s something the protagonists don’t know about, and it shows that the antagonist has been weakened to the point of seeking outside help.

To me, the seeds of Palpatine need to be rooted very early in the trilogy. I know it is a very “fanedit” thing, but I’ve always thought the best way would be to have Snoke talk in an ancient Sith dialect with subtitles. Establish it from his very first appearance that he is more of a Sith prophet than Kylo’s actual master. He should motivate Kylo’s journey by alluding to a “sacred army being forged” that he is destined to lead, and that he will be the essential part of the “dark lord’s” plan. Plenty of Palp teasing. Then, end TLJ on the cliffhanger of the first Palpatine scene.

To me, dubbing any character and giving them subtitles is too big a deviation from canon. That’s why I don’t like a lot of TPM edits. You have to have Mesa Jar Jar Binks and Japanese Neimoidians or it just doesn’t feel like I’m watching SW. The same goes for Snoke.

That said, are there any other Andy Serkis roles we can pull from for Snoke’s lines?

I’m sure that was everyone’s first thought, but obviously it wouldn’t match in the slightest. I’m guessing Ceaser from Planet of the Apes is probably the same situation, but I’ve only seen the first of the ones he’s in, and he barely talks in it, so if someone could back me up on this, that’d be nice.

The other two movies aren’t any better when it comes to matching Snoke’s lines. In the second movie, he SHOUTS! ALL! HIS! DIALOGUE! ONE! WORD! AT! A! TIME! And in the third movie, he says all his dialogue in an ultra-gravelly voice that sounds nothing like Snoke.

He’s gonna play Alfred in the next Batman movie, and I doubt his voice in the role will have anything weird, so there’s that.

Also, gotta love that we’re finally getting to see the man do something in human form for a change. I mean, I’m sure he’s done it before, but he doesn’t do it often.

One thing that really irks me about the ST is all the call backs to stories like Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, Dark Empire, and Legacy of the Force, but with none of the actual buildup and plot progression.

I’m curious about trying to more explicitly draw on those stories for inspiration in fixing the films.
