Was curious how the color shift in AotC would come found, found this scene recomp and sequence shift:  (need to check the DVD, maybe this was done for that, and just didn't make the HD)

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/AotCDIF_480-Shock.mp4

This shot Anakin and Obi have been shifted frame left.

Same lightning just shifted over.

Then the establishing shot of the power couplings has been moved from the middle of the sequence to the end.

So here's the Color Shift pay off in the 2011 AotC.

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/AotCDIF_480-AngryAnakinColor.mp4

Generally the whole movie when DIF'd ends up purpleish.  But the Angry Anakin scene confession to Padme gets DIF'd green.  Sorry these pics suxx, you can generally see it, the videos a little better.  *EDIT* it's actually the after math, and if you like inside jokes this might be it.  Anakin's line is "I'm a Jedi, I know i'm better than this."

Normal new recoloring scheme:

Angry Anakin, color tweak.

Back to normal recoloring scheme.

*EDIT*

The whole post Yoda/Dooku sequence has been reorganized.

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/AotCDIF_480-DookuEscape.mp4

Anakin & Obi hurt and Yoda shoulder slump is moved up, and Padme's arrival/Dooku escape pushed back.

Initially, this is being done to spot changes in the recent set.  I don't have the visual knowledge of these films as many here do.  Never watched them as a kid as we didn't have a VCR or laserdisc.  So although i'm interested in the changes, I can't watch and spot, hey that's off.  But as everything is digital can approach finding changes from a mechanical perspective.  Let the computer figure it out.  But right now don't know how to get the computer to spit out the information.

Here's the graph i'd like to get: (no spit takes!)

Taking two sources and 'Difference' blending mode them, returns mostly black screen, so the chart would flat line most of the time, and the spots where a revision has occured will spike the chart.  Then just go to that spot in the video and see what's causing the anomaly.  That's the identifying part.

Just my initial thoughts about how you might be able to produce this.

Using an Avisynth script along these lines:

source1=[HD broadcast].converttorgb()
source2=[BD rip].convertorgb()
Subtract(source1, source2) # the video will now be totally grey, unless there are any differences between the two sources
Levels([yada yada]) # may be required to tweak levels or saturation to make changes more visible in the following steps
PointResize(1,1) # this basically produces a single pixel by averaging every pixel in the frame
DumpPixelValues("RGB", "(0,0)")

Now open the file dumppixelvalue.log in Excel, and manipulate (convert hex to decimal, etc.) to produce your graph. It will look slightly different because the default will be 128, with differences shown as either higher or lower than this mid point.

Thanks, These sound in the same direction:

"Movie Color Palettes"

http://www.bwolfdesign.com/movie-color-palettes/

"Average color for movie playback"

http://processing.org/discourse/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1226878575

Not sure of the applications or systems they're using so might move towards trying in photoshop, automating each frame to 1 px width like the

"Movie Barcode" people: http://moviebarcode.tumblr.com/

Watched ESB and most of AotC and ran off RotJ and watched the Jabba sequence, and there's a tremendous difference between SW/ESB and RotJ.  RotJ for the most part completely blacks out.  There seems to have been zero to none color tweaks between these files.  In SW and ESB bright whites registered and reds pop as different, but with RotJ even those area very rarely peak out.  You can see that in this clip.

Boba's demise has been revised:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/RotJDIF_480-BobaDeath.mp4 (5.1mb)

The 'hit' shot is now zoomed in:

and a explosion added to mask the hit:

then the shot returns to as it was.

Poking through RotJ found glitch frame in the German'07 HD broadcast.

This does NOT appear in the BR or the 2004.  Extra special FX for one broadcast only... maybe haven't bothered looking any further.

Random selection video bits, commonly known already, but looking at them this way gives you an alt perspective.  For instance with the Wampa Arm change you can see how they modified in multiple locations of the frame in the sequence:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/ESBDIF_480-WampaArm.mp4

With the lightsaber fixes in SW, the change is a little more apparent, i'm counting 9 shots modified between Obi and Vader:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/SWDIF-480_ObiVader.mp4 (57mb)

Humdinger: (pic is excessive dark, quicktime defect) http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/SWDIF_480-Humdinger.jpg

ESB Bespin changes:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/ESBDIF_BespinLeia.mp4

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/ESBDIF_BespinChew3po.mp4

Counted 11 Ewok eyeball shots when poking through RotJ.

I'm not seeing the changes. I think its like the lights, whites just glow on the DIF. Are they visibly different in full color? Because they actually RECOMPOSITED the sabers in 2004, how could they already need fixing? ;-)

HOT DOG, that R2 video is comical. Is he that dumb looking in the Blu?

Generally the far spectrum of whites and reds, (probably because of the compression of these sources) visibly read in the DIFs, to a certain extent. What i'm noticing in this Obi-Vader battle is in certain shots the sabers become a little more vibrant. Which I suspect is because they went through and upgraded certain sabers (white hot cores), like in RotJ.

Here's a description of where I think some of them have been upgraded. They all follow the same pattern until 1:59 in this clip, Obi is doing an overhead swing. In this DIF file the saber's core gains a brighter greener tinge. It's even more noticable in the next shot except it's Vader's saber this time. LFL was talking about making the core's whiter and this looks like a case of that. (the next shot doesn't seem to have this core enhancement)

More core enhancement shots using this clips timeline 2:15 (this is probably the brightest example, 2:17, 2:22, 2:25, 2:28, 2:40, & 3:33 (distance shot). Shots in between, dim, making me believe they were unaffected for 2011.

*EDIT*
I'll do a screen cap of one of these and see what everyone says in the change thread.

Here's experiment with the 1 pixel wide timeline.  This is the Obi-Vader clip, but only just the first 2.7222 minutes.  Here it is raw:

Basically undecipherable.  can read out the two horizontal bands of the untouched frames and some sections are lighter, so boosted the contast:

and well it's more interesting, not sure usefull.  Some of the patterns are saber swings, which is kinda neeto.  Can see some movement over time, and the bright spots are probably the core light saber changes.  The bright pinks at the beginning are the stormtrooper laser blasts.   ...one neet thing to note are the times the actual screen caps (in the small clips) brightens significantly but the DIF part of the frame does not.  also weird seeing the movement over time, the second row is Obi-wan sneaking around.  the next section being 3po sticking his head out to see what's going on.  still on the second row that weird moray pattern is han & chewie running down the DS halls, the overhead lights causing the pattern.  The last bright pink being 'Close the blast doors'.

Any ideas on how this might be useful, are welcomed.

Starting RotS, looks like some of the Wookiee homes have a darkened roof.

recolored roof:

*EDIT*

The intro shot of TPM is shorter, could be another German crawl variation.  Since TPM has this 8% more frame (doesn't seem to be the case for all shots.  Many look shifted right, others the scale is noticable, others like Jar-Jar leaving the swamp later in the movie look the same) using this as a quick test to see how many shots can be done quickly.

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/TPMDIF-Intro.mp4

The yellow box is the 2004.  Have a somewhat close match on the approach.  Then the 2004 shot is extended.  The problem is the next cockpit shot seems to be 1-1, there is no lost frame.  So I jump back to the beginning of the cockpit scene, and attempt to establish the scaling of that shot.

Contemplating what to do next, just out a copy to look for scaled shots or progress slower with the idea of finding changes which wouldn't be apparent until after the scaling is done....

More RotS oddities:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/RotSDIF-480_JediTempleHalf.mp4

For some reason the lower half of this establishing shot of the Jedi Temple has been modified, but not sure what.   Guessing that the bottom half was re-rendered, not sure why else it would emerge in this process.

Similarly, this Palpy shot, his foreheads ringing change bells:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/RotSDIF-480_PalpsForehead.mp4

This one's just square:

http://noneinc.com/SWDIF/SWDIF_EarlyTests/RotSDIF-480_ObiWindowWeird.mp4

They seem to have wanted to lighten the area around Obi head, a halo of sorts, but in the DIF video it's showing up as really square. Here are the actual pics:

Difference Blended Movie
aka Mechanical Approach to Spotting Visual Changes/Variations Between Film Versions
----------------------------------------------
Star Wars Hexology 2004 vs 2011 Comparisons
http://www.archive.org/details/DIF-Star.Wars_2004x2011_480
----------------------------------------------
Purpose : To identify visual changes made to the film, between these two versions.
Process : Two films version are composited using the 'Difference Blending' mode.  This renders pixels which are similar as black.  Areas which are dissimilar show up in color and stand out to varying levels.  This is good for spotting smaller quicker changes, but not good for finding subtle changes like removal of garbage mattes.

http://www.starwars.com/news/saga_bluray_restoration/index.html
"There is a lot of what ends up being 'invisible' fixes," agrees Huebler. "That's the goal: when it's invisible that you don't notice that something glitched or there was a mistake. That could be very challenging to get to, as each one has its own creative decisions."

Recommended Viewing Method : Not recommended to be watched at release size (470 x 204), double or make it full screen.  Also recommend watching at the fastest frame rate possible (without loss of frame display) 1.5x-2x for action scenes.  Maybe 3x+ for dialog scenes, or if you've got a great set of eyes and video card.

Note A : There is no audio.
Note B : 2004 Edit uses German HD broadcast from 2007, this explains the variation with the opening crawl and opening shot.
Note C : All times are in respect to these files, displayed in Quicktime.  Are not applicable to DVD or BR disc times, as the opening crawls modify the films lengths.
Note D : Insert frames - top is 2011, bottom is 2004.  (sorry for forgetting AotC)

These will be somewhat useful, ultimately when we start comparing 35mm prints.

Starting to DIF the 2019 variation comparing to the be all end all 2004 variation.

Full results of SW posted at:
https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Changes-to-the-Disney-2019-SE-of-the-Original-Trilogy/id/72130/page/2#1338831
Or review in the Shot List: (adding the things found by doubleofive, yotsuya, etc. anything I can verify)
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1r9I1lIQWUQpnTbZGaoKTzBr4pqPXTRmCtniXPda8Dwg/edit?usp=sharing

Will start to give an overview of the results with examples.
Note: the 2019 pics do not have proper HDR so think twice about typing about any color issues
In an ideal world the DIF results would look mostly like this:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(1.28.33.09).jpg
In this example the framing is almost perfect between versions. Multiple parts of the image are returning black as if both versions have the same color.

But most of the 2004-2019 DIF look like this:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.05.44.15).jpg
The white edges show how the image has been reframed.

And at what point is the reframing done on purpose?
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.55.23.11).jpg

On the subject of reframing, the new scan may have a different pixel aspect ratio for certain shot. In the next image the left side of frame is aligned between variations (3po is dark), but as you travel right, everything gets further off (the white borders get wider):
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.34.08.20).jpg

And some shots are zoomed in or out:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.42.45.07).jpg
Not sure why you’d want to cut more of R2 off. This shot is part of a wipe so maybe the zoom was for the next shot:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.42.49.13).jpg

http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.20.47.00).jpg
This next example looks like a color change maybe done to enhance the perception of depth for the 3D release which didn’t happen. Look at the color of the top wing of the Sky Hopper to the left of 3po. Notice how much of the DIF image is black except for the Sky Hopper. This happens consistently in this sequence about 24 shots were changed. Here’s a second example:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.21.08.20).jpg
See the center of frame in the DIF image has the same light value return. In the 2004 the top of the Sky Hopper wing is a much darker color.

http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.32.04.20).jpg http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.32.06.09).jpg
For 2019, a slight pan was added to the find 3po’s arm shot. In the first image you can see the offset between variations, but a few frames later 3po’s arms between variations align.

Added Glows. To compensate for the crushed black, I think shots in the 2004 had an artificial glow bubbled around key elements: Luke’s got one here at the Sandcrawler:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.39.46.06).jpg

Here’s a glow in the cantina, might be for Bo Shek:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.45.06.03).jpg

Also in the cantina, Luke got one and this one fades out as Luke walks down the steps:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.45.32.05).jpg

Just as I suspected, a lot of power windows.

Personally I believe power windows on remastered films ruins the authenticity of the image. Recoloring is one thing, every film that goes back to the negative for a remaster has to be regradeed, but power windows should not be used.

Is ‘Power Windows’ the official term?

Here’s that Luke Cantina Power Window in action and de-action:

Here’s the post Jabba re-timed wipe. In 2004 it’s 3po, in 2019 it’s Boba to the left of Obi.
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(0.54.10.22).jpg

Another example of the different pixel aspect ratios between variations:

In one frame of the Death Star approach shot, two frames got doubled up:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(1.04.45.12).jpg

Lucasfilm recolored one of the bulkheads when Luke and Leia swing: (3 shots)
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(1.29.09.05).jpg

When is a shot purposefully reframed?
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(1.32.21.22).jpg

This grouping relates to the Fake Shake shots when Han and Luke shot down the Ties after fleeing the DS.

In 2019, the fake shakes are still there untouched but before and after the framing has been modified, sometimes just for a few frames. This first example Han starts reframed, then centers back to normal (the fake shakes are applied) then as the shot ends it gets reframed again which goes into Luke reframed, then centered to normal for the original fake shakes.
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(1.34.24.20)_a.jpg

My initial guess is possibly this is a trick for the 3D presentation. To create additional sense of movement, the beginning and end of shots were moved to …provide more sense of movement.

But a few shots later a new trick emerges. Han moves but the background stays the same, but just for the last frame. In this animated image we give the end of the shot, hold on the weird frame, then toggle between the last two frames. Check out the the red and white lights in the lower left of the 2019.
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(1.34.51.14)_a.jpg
Could this be a mechanical process result. Remember when OCP was doing Twixor tests and the last frame would be weird because it didn’t have a next frame to interpolate. But this seems more deliberate as if they chose to isolate moving Han and lock down the background. Again maybe this gives an effect in 3D.

Stabilization could be the cause of the next shifted example:
http://fd.noneinc.com/DIF-2004vs2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019/DIFF_04_ANH_2004-2019_(1.36.59.01)_a.jpg
Multiple shots have the beginning or end shifted but then the shot returns to it’s normal location.

Note: check out the Humdinger Glitch shot without HDR, looks like you can see the garbage mattes again.

Starting ROTS, they’ve added a frame to the end of the “Do what must be done, Lord Vader” shot (~1:18:30), then pulled out a frame from the “other separatist leaders” shot (~1:18:53).

~0:00:41 - In 2019, A pixel or two has been cropped off in the vertical dimension.

~0:46:00 - In 2019, the glow (power window) applied to Anakin in 2005 was removed.

~1:18:30 - In 2019, Additional frame added to end of shot of Anakin talking to Sidious/Palpatine.

~1:18:53 - In 2019, Frame removed at beginning of shot of Anakin looking at sitting Sidious/Palpatine.
