Death Star Duel/Ben and Leia:
https://vimeo.com/414119429

Changes

  • Swapped in the Force theme for Leia sensing Ben
  • Added Duel of the Fates
  • Cut out Finn’s last “REEEEEEYYY!”
  • Added a few frames using shots from the trailers
  • Drastically extended and re-scored Leia contacting Ben

As always keep in mind this is rough.

Awesome stuff. The rescore is seamless.

Even if you’ll let me and I end up using this sequence as you’ve edited it, I’d still include the medal shot, personally. But I don’t plan to remove it being given to Chewie.

Makes sense if you’re keeping the Chewie scene. Not the right thread, but do you have plans to make it play out a little better? Or maybe I’d like it more in the context of a fan edit.

It’s probably been mentioned already but what’s your plan with Leia holding Han’s medal? I didn’t notice her holding it the first time I saw the movie, and after noticing it in subsequent viewings it still looked dumb. Especially if Chewy receiving Han’s medal at the end is being cut.

I don’t mind it in just that one shot, and I think it’d be hard to remove.

This is fantastic. The DotF theme fits so seamlessly with this fight scene I’m surprised it wasnt used in the cinematic release.

The Sideways video guy implied that it was originally intended for the film but removed because it was Prequel Music. Don’t know how accurate that is, but I would totally buy it.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I think he was referring to hearing the DotF chants as diagetic singing coming from the Sith cultists during the climax.

It is sort of ironic. John Williams and Abrams seem like they were going to make a new track for Luke raising the X-Wing, but many people around them said it just had to be the same music from ESB because the fans would know it. The Duel of the Fates track seemed like a no-brainer. It even showed up in the marketing, and the duel seems like a great place for it. Is it because it is the from prequels? Hmm.

Williams wrote a piece for the duel, but suggested it be taken out in the final edit. I personally doubt DOTF was involved, or at least I doubt Sideways guy has any inside info as to whether it was (he seems way off base in general). The music in the trailer was most certainly not Williams.

Dom that was very well done, did you use audio from the action figure by any chance?

Holy shit! The best non-Adam Driver Kylo replacement dialogue by far. Perfectly blended, very convincing. A little heavy on the reverb on the word “Power.” Was the line “I can sense it” taken from Driver!!1??? I can’t tell. I want to say no but it sounds like him.

heil Palpatine!

Ah I’ve never heard the Lego TFA dialogue.

Awesome work, this edit is looking better the more clips you post!

The only flaw I noticed was that there was an obvious jump cut in the shot of Rey with her back to the camera. If you fixed that, this change would be perfect.

Huh, don’t know when that got in there. Fixed.

Interesting. What does Kylo then tell Rey in the hangar?

Really promising, although I think the conversation feels a little disjointed now. Kylo goes from talking about Rey’s power to talking about her parents without much build up. I wonder if it would possible to preserve a little more of the original scene while still excising the problematic elements? Is there a way you could work in Poppasketti’s “you were right. They were nobody” line without the “because they chose to be”? I also wonder if the cutaway to the rest of the gang could be moved, as I think it interrupts the flow of the scene, especially since you’ve made it quite a bit shorter.

I think, with the context of the first scene, bringing up her parents makes sense. He’s goading her about her anger, of which a lot comes from her abandonment.

As to including more of the conversation about the parents, it’s something I’ve tried and will continue to tinker with, but I haven’t found any solutions that I’m happy with. The main reason why I feel the need to change the flow of the conversation is that, if you do it they way it is originally, it’s obvious what’s being set up. Kylo goes from talking about what she did in the desert to saying there’s more to her story and what happened to her parents. Linking the two makes for a clear implication that I’m trying to remove.

There’s really no way to move the cutaway, I could remove it, but that’d be tricky considering I’m already considerably cutting down the execution scene. I’m not terribly worried about these scenes feeling short since they don’t have the same revelatory weight as those in the original film.

I really enjoyed that. You’re giving me hope for this movie.

Anyone here really good at audio editing? Like really really good?

Well, after playing with it for forever, there is one line I just cannot seem to get right. I wanted to just post the whole scene but I’m thinking of abandoning this approach. Before I do, I wanted to share with you guys the offending line, to see if A) there’s anyone here who’s good at audio who thinks they could make it work, or B) anyone here can come up with an alternate line that accomplishes the same thing.
