Dom's (Possibly) Useful TROS Edit (WIP) — Page 8

It is kind of funny how I’ve found myself being one of the first batch of editors on this. With the PT I didn’t come around to editing them until well after everyone else, and with the ST my changes were so minimal that no one would ever want to see them (including myself, I guess, since I never came remotely close to finishing them). But it’s a perfect storm here for me, where I was really invested in this trilogy and found this film to be a big disappointment, so there’s a sort of urgency to this. I’m hoping that as long as I turn it into something I find worthwhile, others will too.

Speaking of, are you going to play around with cutting the second (third?) instance of that line?

I don’t think this is necessary. It’s a nice callback, and I think you’re imagining the third one. They only say it two times.

Yeah, sort of (3PO says the first half and the second half is left implied - I think it works). I think there’s only two though? Actually pretty easy (a lot of the dialogue in this film is limited to the center track only).

I’ll post that clip at some point but the music there is a bit of a struggle with the way I’ve changed the farewell bit (since it’s an unreleased cue).

God damn I’m liking this already.

Are you doing this project in 4K HDR by any chance?

I hadn’t really considered it. I do own the 4K set, but long story short I don’t really have the set up to accomplish that now.

Am I the only one who liked Chewie getting his medal?

You’ve got to ask yourself one question: “Am I making Carrie Fisher’s ghost proud?”
Well, are ya, punk?

My suspicion that the original version of the shot where her hand flops over had the medal in it.

Honestly sort of surprised they didn’t go full sentimentality and have the medal falling out of her hand and clattering to the floor, with the sound ringing over into the next cut of Kylo stopping short and turning around.

That would require a scene setting up the medal as Han’s, and they didn’t have time for that.

Without a scene of that sort, sorry to say, Chewie getting the medal will never be in my edit. Probably the single scene that annoyed me the most, outside of Rey Palpatine stuff.

You could use the shot of the medal from the trailer as she dies.

No doubt. They really did cut into the bone way too many times on this movie. So many necessary shots and sequences jettisoned for the sake of going faster, at the expense of any sense being made. Why would you keep these medal shots in if you’re not going to set up OR follow through on any of them properly? Why keep the blender-spun version of Mustafar if that version of the sequence is now completely unneccessary to understanding or even enjoying the scenes that follow? Why would you remove the shots that make the geography of the desert sequences make ANY sort of sense, and then render your Chewie fake death utterly comical because not only is everything happening so fast, now it’s happening in such a non-sequitur manner it might as well be a Looney Tunes cartoon. WHY DOES CHARLIE FROM LOST KEEP TALKING?

So many ideas, and they tried to put all of them in all at the same time and just broke a bunch of them off and shoved the jagged shards into the narrative wherever they could when they didn’t fit right.

Yeah, the editing is by far one of the worst parts of the movie. So many dangling plot threads are left with no explanation. I actually think that some of the editing problems can be fixed by cutting even more footage, removing stuff like the Mustafar scene and Finn wanting to tell Rey something. Not sure what you’re talking about with the desert scenes though, they made sense to me.

Pryde, right? When they land Ochi’s ship in the hangar? 😂

Pryde is such a waste of a character. Was so excited when they did this great shot

but the duplicity never really came. Like, he took control of the First Order but only because Kylo was stuck on the Death Star.

It’s a real shame JJ and co. bought into the fan complaint that Hux wasn’t a viable villain after TLJ.

And even then - okay, you don’t think Hux can be a real bad guy. That’s dumb on the part of the creative team to buy into that, but alright, I’ll roll with it.

Why do you then go and get RICHARD E. GRANT to play such a NOTHING of a character?

When Captain Canady made more impact in 2 minutes of screentime than RICHARD E. GRANT did? Come on.

They could’ve just made Hux lash out more after how he was treated in TLJ. One of the good things in the DOTF script was that it introduced Hux by having him execute the Resistance sympathizer. It reestablishes Hux as someone who had power to hurt people we care about. (It also makes Hux have Force-envy, but…)

But Hux throwing a coup against Kylo felt like such a huge set up. I find it weird JJ and Terrio watched that, saw that final look Hux have Kylo in TLJ, and said, “Well shit, we gotta get rid of Hux now…”

It would probably be a bit of a challenge, but in a more radical edit, I would like to see Pryde and Hux simply working together to try and depose Kylo. So when Pryde gives Hux that look in the meeting room, it’s not because Pryde is suspicious of Hux, but because he’s in on it. So Pryde knows that Hux is leaking information to undermine Kylo’s authority, because they see Kylo as a misguided leader.

You could cut Pryde killing Hux, have Hux communicate with Palpatine’s hologram alongside Pryde or in his stead, and then use footage from TLJ to have Hux observe the battle of Exegol from the Star Destroyer bridge, with Pryde being his second in command.

Snoke clearly found Hux useful, “You wonder why I keep a rabid cur in such a place of power… a cur’s weakness, properly manipulated, can be a sharp tool…” If Snoke was made by Palpatine, then it’s possible that Palpatine would have similar motivations for him.

I think a big motivation for this is that I feel like it isn’t satisfying when we see Pryde blow up at the end, because we’ve barely had any time to feel anything about him. We’ve had three films with Hux, and I think it would be a lot more cathartic to see Hux get blown up by Finn, than to quickly get killed by Pryde and then forget about him.

Grant really plays the role exactly right too, it’s a shame there’s nothing for him to do.

Yeah Hux is really shafted. He’s a dangerous character, I feel like people forget that everything the First Order accomplishes in TLJ is because of him. It’s weird too that they bring up the “error of Starkiller base” when they managed to destroy the Republic and destabilize the galaxy, which allowed them to take over in the first place.

Ideally Hux would have been shown to clash with Ren in IX, and also go far off the reservation (with the rabid “weakness” not being properly manipulated). Yeah he’s the butt of jokes, but that doesn’t make him toothless. It’s easy to imagine a scene in a better IX where we go from laughing at him to be afraid of him in seconds because he’s suddenly executed a Resistance buddy. Missed opportunities.

Imagine Hux frames Pryde for treason and summarily shoots him. Now that would’ve been good. But that’s beyond the feasibility of a fanedit.

heil Palpatine!

Vanilla can be a pretty subtle and interesting flavor profile if used with care in a pint of good gourmet stuff.

Or it can be half a bottle of imitation extract dumped into cereal milk and left in the freezer for 15 minutes.
