Oh wow, I’d never seen that before. I had no idea what they began their broadcasts with but of course they played Star Wars first, haha. I knew that MTV started with Video Killed the Radio Star but I didn’t know there was a whole countdown and then a dedication to Asimov, and then STAR WARS as the beginning of the Sci-Fi Channel.

Such humble little beginnings for what would eventually become… whatever it is now, LOL! Thanks for posting that.

It was about two weeks of that countdown clock with trippy screensaver like graphics and random soundbites from across the genre. I was so thrilled my cable company had it from the ground floor. That dedication still brings a tear to my eye.

I noticed that the on the uhd discs for ANH & ROTJ they have hardcoded subs for the alien language parts, while the foreign language versions have these sections without hardcoded subs , via seemless branching. Going to be a pain in the ass for editors wanting to use them as a source. I don’t know if the blu-rays are the same though.

If you backup the whole disc first, you can edit the .mpls playlist with a hex editor to include whatever pieces you want.

The easy thing to do is pick the French or Spanish playlist, 801.mpls or 802.mpls, and just substitute the first .m2ts piece from the English playlist, so that you get the English crawl, and no other burnt in subs.

It may be worth noting that the Force Awakens UHD only has burnt in subs, while Solo and TROS only have soft subs.

There are web rips of TFA with no subs from Disney+, and of TROS with the theatrical subs burnt in from Amazon. Solo has theatrical subs available on Amazon and Vudu, but I’ve not seen a WebDL version before.

The Rogue One UHD also has both options, but some editing is required to remove all the burnt in subs, due to the planet names being in another language on one of the segments.

If I had some gum, I’d chew a hole into the sun…

Yes, but it’s not just an .mpls hack, like for the other films. You’ll need to actually split the two version of the clip containing the first group of burnt in subs.

You need to join the first half from the English version with the second half from the French or Spanish version, if you want to maintain the English planet names.

FWIW, that only applies to the UHD. You can just edit the .mpls to remove burnt in subs from the BD version.

BTW I’ve only had success using MKVToolNix to split and rejoin HEVC video streams without re-encoding.

I remember only having a VHS recording of Star Wars with commercials when I was growing up. I don’t know how I enjoyed anything on that tiny fuzzy screen with crap speakers. I can’t believe how good we have it now.

All I had was an audio cassette recording off of HBO before my Dad finally bought a VCR in 1983. 😉

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a brown paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six o’clock in the morning, clean the bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down mill for fourteen hours a day week in-week out. When we got home, our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

Luxury.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Took a few screens:

So far i feel mostly MEH on the new 4K versions. Like the 2004 Lowry master they went too far - this time in the opposite direction - with the new color grading. For example, Lukes stromtrooper armor looks greenish/yellow to me. Most of the other 4K screencaps i saw in several threads also suffer from this yellow-ish tint along with washed-out almost monochromatic colors. Very strange.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

The new colors are vast improvement over Lowry artificial pallets. Luke’s uniform wouldn’t be white inside interior lit with yellow light. It is more or less natural.
You can get washed-out monochromatic colors but that is because screenshots made wrong, without HDR tone mapping. Screenshots above are fine. They are true to what is on new discs.

Think not about what this transfer does for these lame versions of classic films, & think what this transfer can do for wonderful restorations!

Looking at the cap from above, thought I’d put together a comparison of “Here to Rescue Yous”

I think I got those all labeled correctly.

Thanks for making this comparison. I think you did label them correctly.

I loaded the final capture from the 4k into Capture One editing software and a simple one click white balance adjustment gets rid of the very slight teal bias of the original image. Or at least, that’s how it appears to me on a calibrated monitor.

I’d like to see that. I feel with a slight White balance adjustments and slight Contrast boost these will look great (Apart from the use of DNR).

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Honestly I really like the new colors for the OT, best I’ve ever seen apart from some of the 4K77 grades.

The real reason why it looks better, is the increased color depth and dynamic range visible even in an 8 bit SDR screencap. Plus there isn’t all the banding and video-noise in there from a poor scan like the 2004/2011 masters. Even if you apply the same grade to this footage to match a different release, this one will still look better.

Excessive DNR is annoying as hell tho. I like my film movies grainy. Just look at Bridge over the River Kwai on 4K Blu-ray for some beautiful grain.

DNR aside, having better quality source colors makes a huge difference to me. Between these new official masters and 4K77/4K83, it’s getting harder to watch fanedits and preservations sourced from earlier official masters.

another bad JFK Impersonation 😉

We choose to preserve the OT. We choose to preserve the Original Trilogy in this decade, not because it is easy, but because it is hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

That looks Fantastic. It took out that green hue in the highlights.

It’s just a few seconds’ work - correct white balance using the stormtrooper armour as the anchor then raise contrast a few points. What I wonder is, if everyone who compares these screenshots finds the original looks ‘too green’, how come this wasn’t corrected in the mastering?

Color wise, I think they tried to make the whole saga match. Contrast wise, the Pt and St look similar, while the Ot looks pale in comparison.

I do wonder if that green tone is from the HDR to SDR conversion. These caps from the new HD bluray don’t seem to have the same tones on the stormtroopers.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Wars-Episode-IV-A-New-Hope-4K-Blu-ray/257142/#Screenshots

I find that any HDR conversion screenshots hard to trust.

Good point. The screenshots near the top of the screen on that link look great. The shots lower down do not appear to have a strong colour cast but they look darker to me - something like one third of a stop in old fashioned camera terms.

I’m a bit brassed off with HDR… there seem to be so many pitfalls. A sales rep from a monitor company summed up his frustration with the HDR craze very well:

“Do you really want to wear sunglasses in the cinema?”

I just checked the Japanese release for the box set. It appears to have better packaging, but you pay dearly for it:

https://bit.ly/2VnwIzi

It looks like the discs are stored in separate cartons and the book is allowed to be just a book. The price though…
