The Empire Strikes Back - a general Random Thoughts thread — Page 2

It’s interesting to think about that Wedge, 2-1B and that one radio guy are the only ones except for the main characters to appear in more than one film from the Alliance. The Empire I get since it’s so big, but for the rebels it would have been fun to see more same pilots and command crew even in the background. But I don’t mean too many, 1-3 more would have been enough, because it also helps world building to see new faces and lose others.

A lot of rebels don’t survive past one reel of each movie though. Even being Luke’s snowspeeder gunner is not a safe gig.
Who’s the one radio guy?

Pilots yes, but the command crew etc. like the before mentioned Dodonna and Rieekan could have been seen in the ROTJ briefing at least or something.

The one who says “enemy fighters coming to your way” in SW was on Hoth listening to the probe droid.

Wow, never noticed him in ESB. As Leia seems to be using the Captain is the last man to abandon ship protocol on Hoth, I could see other rebel leaders waiting until the last ship goes out even though that increases the chances of not escaping. I once read someplace that Rieekan was supposed to have died in ESB, (which left Leia running things when Han shows up to get her) but was that ever filmed?

It is in the fourth draft (which seems to be what filming started with), but no telling if it was filmed or survived to the (regrettably unsurfaced) fifth draft. The Making of ESB seems to outline a few differences, namely a couple of Cloud City scenes that seem to have been filmed but later cut for budgetary reasons (it would have been shots requiring matte paintings and opticals).

As Rieekan dying takes place when the command center gets hit, it seems like that scene would have been cut from the schedule due to how much more difficult it may have been to actually wreck the set on camera, rather than redress it to look destroyed. I can’t imagine they would have filmed something like that and cut it. The script didn’t change much aside from cutting out a part when Han and Leia acknowledge his death.

The fifth draft has surfaced, it’s just not on Starkiller - there was a PDF floating around some movie-script sites on the Internet a few years back.

The fifth draft omits Rieekan’s death scene; it plays out like in the final film, with the command center falling apart around Leia but Rieekan absent for whatever reason.

So I found a video on youtube where in the audience reaction video from 1980. Vader literally says “No Luke, I Am Your Father.” Thoughts??? There’s obvious editing but could it be there were audio versions of that in theaters. Could it be this is how the common “Luke I Am You Father”, comes from??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZCo_hZLyh0

All my life as I looked away to the future, to the horizon. Never in my mind did I know where I was, what I was doing.

How the heck did someone smuggle a big ass video camera and portable recorder into a 1980 screening?

And yes, it weighs a @#$%^@! ton.

Someone in the comments explained it. It was recorded by someone who worked at a local news station in Phoenix, Arizona. The different line is just a glitch, not an audio change.

Regarding rebel commanders (and personnel) being changed from film the film, I think that was the only right way to go in terms of story/universe. First, it provides a sense of scale of the rebellion, i.e., they have many bases around the galaxy, and counterbalances the rest of the universe shrinking elements. Second, it provides a sense of how dangerous being a rebel actually is, i.e., even the top commanders might get killed regularly.

I do agree completely. But only one or two would have been enough, and I wouldn’t even have them speak. Just something you could see when watching the film 2000th time in 4K.

Has anyone been checking EC Henry’s (Aalenfae) videos about revitalizing old kitbash background ships into more cohesive designs?

The ones from ESB are interesting, since most didn’t exist besides the initial opening shot of the fleet (and are absent from the additional 35mm shots). He still has so far only tackled two from ESB and four from ROTJ, but the ESB ones are so cobbled together that they actually put some of the hero ships to shame in terms of ugly realism. In trying to search for any information on the other ships (and there are almost half a dozen), I found only this one: http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=111230

There are other very interesting shapes in the film shot and a couple of press kit composites, including one flying wing design that reminds me of a primordial B-wing.

I’ve seen links but haven’t watched any yet. I see he did one for the imperial TIE shuttle thing from ESB. Does he give credit to the people on theRPF.com? There was a thread years ago where a guy was researching that ship and figured out it was likely a TIE bomber with the wings flipped around.

Would Yoda have still existed if Kenobi wasn’t killed off? If so what would Kenobi be doing in ESB? And if not where would Luke be instead of his Dagobah vacation?

IIRC, Lucas is on record saying Yoda came about because someone had to train Luke.

I would think Obi Wan would have resumed training Luke and stay close to the Rebellion wherever they went. Leia and other surviving Rebel leaders would probably want General Kenobi’s counsel from time to time. Although had Obi Wan survived into ESB, he could have sacrificed himself in some way early on, (facing off with Vader again to buy the Rebels time to escape Hoth) and still have directed Luke to Dagobah.
Sir Alec was already dealing with fanboys at this point, and probably wouldn’t have minded being killed off in the second film.

Kind of surprised the Infinities comics didn’t toy with the Obi Wan lives scenario.

Or maybe we would’ve seen Obi-Wan training Luke during the middle of ESB, and he would’ve accompanied Luke to Cloud City and sacrificed himself there.
