The 2004 DVD is one of the releases that I have the fondest memories of, and I remember the day I went with my mother to buy it quite clearly. However, much to my her surprise, after we got back from the mall I completely ignored the actual films and sat down and watched the 4th Bonus Material disc instead. I already had the 1996 VHS set so I wasn’t really that interested in the SE versions. I’ve always been fascinated by film-making, so the bonus disc was like my holy grail of BTS info at age 12.

Even though, like most people my age, I saw the SE’s first, I was very lucky in that when I asked for my own copies back in 1999 during the TPM hype, my mother went to a second-hand VHS & comics store (which just so happened to be near her work) and bought the 1996 VHS set not having any clue that there were different versions. However, I’ve lately started to wonder if maybe I have the store clerks to thank for me having grown up with the unaltered versions, since I remember some of them being quite knowledgeable about the stuff they were selling. So who knows, maybe they intentionally picked out the original versions when she showed up to buy the SW films for me.

Star Wars 1988 CBS Special Movie Intro
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YzzFujONqw - from the Sean Mc YouTube channel (50 sec long).

The voice-over;
“The supreme adventure awaits you. The ultimate challenge beckons. The clash of good versus darkest evil. The friendships of a lifetime. The family favorite of all time!”

(Some odd editing here BTW, Leia seems straight up shocked at being rescued, and Luke appears to be less than enthusiastic about the film airing on CBS.)

Great find. I love that Outer Limits style voice-over, it’s always fun when ads like this got creative instead of just cutting a bunch of movie clips together.

^ the fact that James Earl Jones as Darth Vader narrates the intro is the icing on the cake ! could be a good resource for fan editors who can isolate the audio …

Where is that music at the beginning of the promo (4:40 in the video) from?

“That Darth Vader, man. Sure does love eating Jedi.”

Sounds like Cocoon (James Horner). It would make sense, being another Fox release (though granted, not as much sense as using something from the extensive catalogue of actual Star Wars music!)

Star Wars 1978 Theatrical Re-Release Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx-ju1mUmEc - from the official Star Wars YouTube channel (2:50 mins long).

StarWars.com Trivia:

  • The first and only time we see the famous words of “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” in a trailer, though it would still be mentioned in later trailers.
  • The narration combines many of the lines from previous trailers, including the often-used marketing line, “A movie billions of years in the making.”

I find this trailer to be quite fascinating in how mundane and lazy it is. It’s really just a lengthy montage of scenes from ANH and it re-purposes the narration from the original 1976 Teaser, though when its cut up like this and removed from the Vivaldi score it feels very dull and lifeless. The music also cuts out in odd ways throughout, so I’m wondering if they frakensteined this out of multiple trailers and promos. This would make a lot of sense as it contains the same pre-vfx shots of the Ben vs Vader lightsaber duel that was used in the teaser.

Star Wars 1981 Theatrical Re-Release Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8AD7wzsPFQ - from the official Star Wars YouTube channel (30 sec long).

The blurb:
“Star Wars again returned to cinemas on April 10, 1981 for a limited two-week engagement.”

StarWars.com Trivia:

  • The first trailer to feature the new MPAA title card telling the audience that this trailer is approved for all audiences.
  • This is also the first time that the proper Star Wars logo is seen in a trailer, yet weirdly enough the trailer ends with the classic teaser logo seen in 1976.

This trailer also uses unfinished shots from the original teaser, but at least this one has a new voice-over.

The logo that appears at 0:39 is custom-drawn, though it’s obviously related to the logo used in much of the original marketing. I wonder if it was a candidate at one point for the logo to be used with the title crawl (which had white text in early test versions).

Also, those white lightsaber sticks are what the original in-camera lightsaber effect (using glowing sticks powered by electric cords hidden up the actors’ sleeves) looked like. It just didn’t work very well.

I knew about the lightsaber effects, but I just assumed that the logo was taken straight from one of the early designs. Though I haven’t seen this exact version, it seem like they just traced over the Dan Perri logo used for the Tom Jung poster. Makes sense though that they had to make a “new” version for the trailer in order to do the masking effect. The white logo is probably the exact same one as seen later in the trailer but with a simple white background added instead of ANH footage.

Thanks for the info about Dan Perri! It looks like he designed the logo to be skewed so it could fit at the head of the title crawl (where the film title is placed in Alex Tavoularis’ storyboards). It doesn’t look very practical for that purpose, though, considering the text blocks in the crawl are rectilinear and simply filmed at an angle.

Early test crawls in the eBook versions of Rinzler’s Making of SW have a different logo, but that one is also placed at the start of the crawl. In those versions the (white) logo starts out upright, then folds down to the plane of the crawl and recedes as the text (also white, with fonts varying in different tests) scrolls up.

Also, somebody ought to tell the editors of Dan Perri’s Wikipedia page about Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe.
