With the caretakers being removed, it might be good to trim Snoke’s line about destroying the entire island.

I’ve always thought it was weird that he would specifically single out the island for destruction. We’ve kind of come to expect nothing less than total planetary destruction from the big bad forces in Star Wars, so I kind of just assumed that he’d take care of the whole planet.

I assumed that particular island is significant to Snoke because it is the birthplace of the Jedi and site of the first Jedi Temple.

The line is something like this:

“Well, I did not realize Skywalker was so wise. We will give him and the Jedi order the death he desires. [Once the rebels are gone, we will go to the planet and destroy the entire island.]”

I think the last part capitalizes on Rey’s passion for protecting the caretakers as seen in the deleted scene where she tries to do so. With no one on the island in this version, and nothing in Rey’s mind to correspond to anyone else living on the island, Snoke threatening to destroy the whole island seems excessive and blunt.

I agree with RogueLeader on that reasoning. Also, logically, their planet killer has been destroyed in TFA. They have plenty of big ole ships that could lay waste to an island. Heck, a Dreadnaught would do it as it was implied being a “fleet killer.”

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

Yeah, I think Snoke wants to destroy the last remnants of the Jedi by destroying both the Last Jedi and the site of the first Jedi temple. End it where it all began. I don’t think it is really related to the caretakers, but I can see that being an added motivation for Rey to stop Snoke.

I’m sure Snoke is referring to Luke, the tree, and the Jedi texts (I’m sure he’s assuming that they weren’t taken).

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

Luke’s instinct is to destroy the texts, and Yoda confirms that this instinct is correct. The texts were dry and boring and what really matters is the Force itself, because it alone will guide you. Rey needs to look forward, not backward, if she is to succeed.

But Yoda didn’t destroy the texts, they’re aboard the Falcon at the end of the film.

True, but the point still stands that they are not as important as he assumed.

Agree, I always thought that line sounded flat as we are used to them decimating complete planets by now. I assumed it was the Jedi history that Snoke wanted gone as opposed to specifically the caretakers it does sounds better without that line but guess its a majority vote.

@Hal 9000 Here’s a suggestion: can you remove the “oh no” at the beginning of the film? It disrupts the flow of the scene (I mean, if you remove the line, then the scene flows so much better) and basically tells us how we should react, when in reality we already know that it’s an “oh no.”

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I’ve noticed a similar number of us here wish you’d included the Caretakers in some way so you could include the 3rd lesson scene as wanted the alternate release of Ep. 3.

I know you’re unlikely to do this officially with unfinished shots, but I was wondering if I could nudge you to release an “alternate workprint” with that single change implemented for pre-Ep 9 viewing? I won’t have my editing computer for a few months or I’d do it myself 😑

Thanks for the PM.

The scene is unfinished and would need work to address temp effects. As I’ve said I think I agree with RJ’s choice to cut the scene (despite liking it) to leave things hopeful between Luke and Rey before their falling out. Side benefit also, with Luke being truly alone.

And in this case, unlike with Ep3, there’s no drastic, alternate-universe sort of divergence. I respect your question, but I don’t think so for this one. 😕

No worries. You may have noticed I’m fond of the standard movie “things happen in threes”, so I’m probably grasping at that like usual. 😛

The scene itself is probably the one where Luke feels OT the most. Sadly, that flies in the face of the entire rest of the movie.

I’ll be watching this today, review coming.

Conceptually, I’ve always thought that Rey shouldn’t walk up and give Luke the lightsaber until TLJ. TFA, IMHO, would end perfectly if Rey and Chewie show up, immediately cut to Luke in his hut saying “Go away” Chewie blows off the door. The movie ends with Luke saying “Where’s Han?”, Which circle wipes to the credits. The line has more emotion in the same film as the death, gives us the OT payoff feeling TFA’s ending struggled with.

I’d then spend the first Luke scenes of TLJ with Rey trying to follow Luke around the island. Move the lightsaber handoff to after this, so that he tosses it. Then cut elsewhere. Next time it cuts back to Luke/Rey, they’re sitting and discussing “you think I’m going to come out with a lightsaber and face down the whole First Order”. Proceed as preferred.

Who knows though, maybe your edits will sway my opinion. 😉

Can’t blame you for trying, If you do end up editing it in yourself let us know 😉
Also I think you’ll fully enjoy what Hal has created here once you’ve seen it for yourself.

I would make it obvious and loud. It helps cement Luke’s decision to ignite his blade.

It also helps to show how Palps manipulated Luke and played on his PTSD

The Skywalker Saga:
I · II · III · IV · V · VI · VII · VIII · IX
This is the way.

Im on the other side of DZ thought, I like the subtlety. The Emperor has been gone up to this movie and is making some kind of presence in the next one … so no need to full out tease him yet at this point.

Yeah, I do not want to distract from the point of the scene. It shouldn’t be “wow, the emperor,” but augment the horrors Luke sees, thematically if not literally.

I think it works really well. I’m thinking of actually making a vision for the scene, with quick blurry flashes of events that will happen and I’d definitely add the Emperor’s laugh in there, but this is very subtle and nice.

I’d do a HD remake of this edit, with shots from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, and yeah I’d also add Sidious cackling, before we cut straight to the lightsaber already turned on. (We can imply that Sidious or Snoke, not Luke, turned on the saber or something)

Yeah, the subtlety is better in my opinion. I actually missed it at first, which to me makes it feel like it could’ve actually been a movie, rather than it feeling like a fan edit (which many edits fall victim to).

I had the chance to look over TiMartyn’s work and he had a neat little idea to remove Luke’s ‘Matrix’ style duck as Kylo swipes at him during the duel. The shots align almost perfectly once it and one other are removed.
Just like the iron, I don’t really mind it but it does feel outside the normal scope of what Star Wars does. I like it better without the shot now, even so.

I haven’t seen the TiMartyn clip, but my gut instinct is that I would really miss “Matrix” Luke. I don’t even see it as Matrix-esque, but rather Luke integrating physical and force training in a really awesome way. Before we know it’s a force projection we finally have a chance to see Luke at his best and it kicks ass!
