New-ish Disney+ Artwork

I just noticed that the Disney+ artwork recently changed. The horizontal thumbnails now contain artwork with new logotypes, now including the episode numbers in the titles (previous releases under Disney didn’t include the episode numbers in the titles). Interesting!

Really? I thought it was just since TFA, which like I said in the other Disney+ thread (and when TFA art first appeared) just looks like Evil Dead II to me. A weird bug but I can’t shake it.

In 1977 they just used a lighter weight version of the font (ITC Serif Gothic) for the credits at the bottom of the posters as well as for the “a long time ago…” tagline. The font was heavily used in the 70’s so it may look dated to some. It was also used on the first few Star Trek movie posters and in the opening credits and logo for Halloween.

Maybe I’m biased because I always loved those original posters, but Serif Gothic always felt quintessentially Star Wars to me (moreso than the fonts used for the later films) and I was very happy when they went back to it.

You’ve expressed my feelings exactly. Every time I see that font I think of Star Wars, and only Star Wars.

Font choice is always a gamble, I just picture six people crowded around a monitor looking at 20 slightly different samples slowly going mad at 3am, very relatable by the way. What really stands out for me is that hard break between real Drew Struzan oil paints to photoshop by the end, I know there is painted artwork of the sequel characters more consistent with the older posters, they really all should look like a legacy set by the end.

Somewhat random, but I appreciate how the prominence of the lightsabers is inversely correlated with the quality of the installment.

Not sure I buy that TPM is as good as you say. Does remind me though of a chart that accounted for lightsaber ignitions or something along those line which similarly inversely correlated with quality.

I will say on the whole, I don’t know if these will be the actual images we’ll see when Disney+ lunches in the US in a couple weeks, but it’s definitely better than the other artwork we’ve seen. Although it does bother me that the titles for TESB and TLJ are centered and the others aren’t. And, yes, the fact that the ST posters are photoshops and not hand drawn continues to be a disappointment. It would’ve been interesting to see them use the Struzan tease poster for TFA and the Dolby poster (by Paul Shipper I think?) for TLJ just to keep the style somewhat consistent.

But if D+ is anything like Netflix, the thumbnails won’t last very long before they’re changed again, so it kinda doesn’t matter.
